The fastest reliable way to progress in The Battle Cats is to repeat a simple loop: clear the next story stage you can beat, collect XP and Treasures, level the cats you actually deploy, improve the base systems that address your current bottleneck, and then push forward again. Treasures provide permanent account-wide effects, so they are part of normal progression rather than optional completionism. Keep a flexible team early, use natural Cat Energy for routine play, and reserve Leadership for concentrated farming or an important chain of stages.
How beginner progression works
The game is built around stages. You deploy cat units, manage the wallet and production timing, and use the Cat Cannon while trying to destroy the enemy base. Clearing stages awards XP and may award Treasures. PONOS summarizes the core loop as “Get XP by clearing stages!”
1. Push the next story stage you can reasonably clear
Start with the next available story stage instead of spending all of your energy replaying one easy map. Story progress unlocks more stages, raises the range of enemies and stage rules you encounter, and contributes to the progression systems that eventually raise unit level caps. If a stage defeats you repeatedly, that is a signal to improve a specific weakness rather than to spread XP across every cat in your Cat Guide.

Choose a small group of dependable cats that cover different jobs and keep them levelled. A level increase directly improves a unit’s health and attack. The initial cap is level 10; User Rank and story progression can raise caps for most units. For a unit that has an Evolved Form, reaching level 10 unlocks that evolution milestone.

3. Improve the base system that is slowing you down
If you are constantly short of XP, Study is the relevant upgrade because it increases XP received after clearing a stage. If your play sessions end because the energy reserve is empty, Cat Energy upgrades are more useful: each listed base-upgrade level adds 10 to maximum energy. These upgrades solve different problems, so the better choice depends on what is actually stopping your progress.
4. Revisit earlier stages for Treasures
When a story region is difficult, return to its stages and improve your Treasure results. Treasure drops have Inferior, Normal and Superior tiers. Regional Treasure collections grant permanent upgrades that affect game systems and enemy matchups across your account. The Treasure reference describes obtaining them as “paramount” for significant progress; treating them as optional collectibles leaves your units fighting with avoidable disadvantages.
What to upgrade first
There is no universal beginner tier list in the documented material, and a rare unit is not automatically the best investment. Upgrade according to role, availability and the stage you are trying to solve.
Recommended priority order
- Core units you deploy every battle. Keep several inexpensive blockers, at least one dependable damage dealer and one ranged attacker progressing together. Do not spend most of your XP on cats that never leave the Cat Guide.
- Study when XP is the bottleneck. Its effect is simple: successful stage clears award more XP. The benefit compounds whenever you are farming XP, so it is most valuable when you can play enough stages to use the extra income.
- Cat Energy when the reserve is the bottleneck. Each listed level adds 10 maximum energy. This does not make stages cheaper or refill energy instantly; it lets you hold more energy before you have to wait.
- Role-specific unit levels. Raise the units that answer the stage’s threats. Blockers need enough health to buy time, damage dealers need enough attack to finish enemies, ranged attackers need the reach to fire safely, and control units need the relevant effect or trait matchup.
- Evolution at level 10. For units with an Evolved Form, level 10 is the normal early milestone. Evolution does not replace the need for a balanced roster; it improves a unit that already has a useful job.

Think of breadth and depth as two different investments. Deeper levels make a core unit stronger in the situations where it already works. Broader role coverage gives a beginner answers to more stage designs. Early on, a modestly levelled team with several jobs covered is usually more useful than one heavily levelled favorite surrounded by gaps.

How Treasures work and how to farm them
Treasure tiers
Story stages can award Inferior, Normal or Superior Treasure. The tier matters because the permanent regional effect becomes stronger as the collection improves. A single low-tier drop is not a reason to abandon a chapter; keep replaying the relevant stages when you have energy available and improve the collection over time.
Why Treasure collection is progression, not decoration
Regional sets provide permanent account-wide advantages. Depending on the set, those advantages can improve game systems or change how effectively you handle enemy matchups. Because the effects persist beyond the stage where you found them, a Treasure run can strengthen every later attempt, including attempts made with units that have not gained another level.
A practical Treasure routine
- Push story stages until a new map is clearly beyond your current team.
- Identify the earlier stages in that region whose Treasure effects would help your current weakness.
- Replay those stages while your natural energy is regenerating, prioritizing useful regional sets over random easy clears.
- Return to the difficult story stage after the relevant Treasure collection improves.
Do not assume that a single lucky drop means the regional effect is complete. Check the in-game Treasure display and continue until the collection shows the tier you need. The exact stage schedule and drop availability can vary by mode and event, so use the live stage information in your app rather than a fixed calendar.
Cat Energy: regeneration, upgrades and Leadership
Natural regeneration
Most stages consume Cat Energy. In the documented system, it regenerates automatically at one energy unit per minute. Challenge Battle, Catamin Stages and Catclaw Dojo are listed as exceptions, so do not assume every mode follows the standard timer. Natural regeneration is time-based: you spend energy, leave the game or play another mode, and the reserve gradually returns until it reaches your cap.

What the Cat Energy upgrade actually does
The base upgrade increases the maximum reserve by 10 energy for each listed upgrade level. It does not increase the regeneration rate and does not reduce a stage’s energy cost. Buy it when the cap is the reason you are waiting; if you are waiting because XP is insufficient, Study addresses the more relevant constraint.
How Leadership works
Leadership is an inventory item that refills Cat Energy to its maximum and preserves the energy you already had as overflow. Overflow is consumed first, and normal regeneration pauses while overflow remains. For example, using Leadership while you still have energy does not discard that remaining amount; it is added on top of the full refill and spent before the normal reserve begins regenerating again.
Leadership can come from several reward systems, including subchapter endings, events and User Rank rewards, along with other activities listed by the game. Because availability depends on clears and the live event schedule, there is no single fixed refill timetable that is optimal for every account.
When to spend each resource
- Use natural regeneration for routine story progression and for XP or Treasure farming when the relevant stages are available.
- Save Leadership for a concentrated farming session, a limited-time opportunity or an important sequence of stages where waiting between attempts would interrupt your plan.
- Check the overflow state before using another refill. Since overflow is spent first and pauses normal regeneration, stacking refills without a plan can delay the return of your ordinary energy.
How many cats fit in a team?
The documented team-formation page describes a battle lineup of up to 10 cats: five positions on the first page and five on the second. The first five positions can activate Cat Combos. See the formation reference at the team-formation page.

Equip-slot counts are version-sensitive. An update-history report describes an expansion from 18 to 19 equip slots and says slots above 10 require Meow Medals and Cat Food, but that report also warns that newer-version coverage is incomplete. Treat those figures as historical guidance, not a promise about your current build: open the Equip screen in your own app and use the number shown there.
Build a general-purpose beginner lineup
Fill the available positions by job rather than by rarity. A practical starting pattern is several inexpensive blockers, one or two ranged attackers, a primary damage dealer and a few slots reserved for units that answer the traits or effects shown on the stage. You do not need to force exactly one of every role; the point is to avoid a lineup that cannot protect its attackers or reach enemies safely.
- Blockers: low-cost units that can be produced repeatedly to hold the front line.
- Damage dealers: units that convert the time bought by blockers into enemy-base damage.
- Ranged attackers: units that can contribute from behind the front line or outrange a threat.
- Control or matchup units: cats whose effects or traits directly answer the enemies in the stage.
Replace a cat when another unit performs the same job better in the stages you play, not merely because the replacement has a higher rarity. The battle interface supports multiple equipped cats, item selection and a two-column display option, so arrange the lineup in the order that makes production decisions easiest for you.

A generalist team is convenient when you do not know what a stage contains. Once you have read the stage traits, enemy effects or special rules, a specialized team is usually stronger: swap in the blocker, attacker or control unit that directly answers those conditions. Keep at least one flexible damage option unless the stage’s rules clearly reward a narrower plan.

Troubleshooting a stalled account
“I cannot beat the next story stage.”
First check whether a relevant Treasure collection is incomplete. Then identify the failure: if your front line disappears immediately, level or add inexpensive blockers; if enemies survive too long, improve a damage dealer; if your attackers are being hit before they can contribute, add range or a control effect. Spend XP on those specific jobs instead of levelling every available cat.
“I have cats, but no XP to level them.”
Stop spreading XP across the entire roster. Concentrate on the lineup you use most, upgrade Study if XP income is the limiting factor, and spend natural energy on stages that provide the XP you need when they are available. Leadership can support a deliberate farming session, but using it randomly will not fix a roster that lacks priorities.
“I run out of energy too quickly.”
Raise the Cat Energy base upgrade if the reserve cap is the problem. Let natural regeneration refill you between sessions, and use Leadership when you have a clear block of stages or a limited-time farming opportunity. Remember that some modes do not follow the standard one-per-minute regeneration rule.
“I cannot find the number of team or equip slots described online.”
Separate battle lineup capacity from equip-slot availability. The documented lineup is up to 10 cats, arranged five plus five, while equip-slot counts have changed between versions. Open the current Team and Equip screens in your app; the live interface is authoritative for your edition and update.
