Arkham City is the tighter, denser game; Arkham Knight is the broader, more system-heavy finale. City confines Batman to a fortified Gotham district and concentrates on vertical exploration, a focused villain ensemble and readable hand-to-hand FreeFlow. Knight expands the setting to three bridge-linked islands, adds a fully drivable Batmobile, increases interior exploration and layers vehicle combat and traversal onto the same counter-and-gadget foundation. Choose City for atmosphere and narrative focus; choose Knight for scale, speed and a wider sandbox.
At a glance: what actually changes
| Area | Batman: Arkham City | Batman: Arkham Knight |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | A heavily fortified district inside Gotham | Gotham City spread across three bridge-linked islands |
| Combat emphasis | Expanded FreeFlow with simultaneous counters, projectile counters, beatdowns, enemy combo attacks and gadget combos | The same counter-and-gadget foundation, expanded with vehicle combat, vehicle traversal and a broader gadget toolkit |
| Traversal | Gliding, diving and grapple-boosting | Gliding, diving and grapple-boosting, plus a fully drivable Batmobile |
| Story shape | A contained villain ensemble inside one controlled district | An endgame-scale conflict led by Scarecrow, the Arkham Knight and several returning villains |
| World feel | Compact, vertical and heavily authored | Wider, faster and more vehicle-oriented, with taller buildings and more interiors |
| Best fit | Players who value atmosphere, density and a focused Batman story | Players who value scale, smoother movement and a larger set of activities |
There is no authoritative, directly comparable measurement of either map’s area, and no reliable sales or review-total figure establishes one game as objectively superior. The useful comparison is how each world spends its space and how each combat system asks you to make decisions.
How combat differs
Arkham City’s FreeFlow is broader without becoming cumbersome
City keeps the series’ rhythm: read an enemy’s animation, choose the correct response and preserve your flow. Its important change is not a separate combo mode but more options inside the same readable loop. You can counter several attackers at once, stop incoming projectiles, perform beatdowns, launch enemy combo attacks and combine gadgets with strikes.

Projectile counters extend that same principle to objects thrown across an arena. Beatdowns let Batman commit to a rapid attack on a dangerous target, while enemy combo attacks and gadget combos reward choosing an action that fits the current crowd rather than repeating punches.

Rocksteady game director Sefton Hill described the design goal in a 2011 PlayStation Blog Q&A: “We didn’t want to overcomplicate the system. I think its strength is that it focuses on selecting the right move, not long combos or complicated sequences.” That explains why City can feel more technical than Arkham Asylum while remaining approachable: the challenge is selecting a response under pressure, not memorising a long command string.
Arkham Knight adds layers around the same foundation
Knight does not discard City’s counter timing. Punches, counters and gadgets remain the basis of ordinary encounters, so a player who learned City can transfer the core skills. The difference is the number of contexts in which those skills operate. Knight adds vehicle combat and vehicle traversal, giving Batman a second movement and attack space in addition to rooftop fights.
The official announcement presented the Batmobile as a first for the franchise and as an extension of Batman’s abilities rather than a separate minigame. In the trilogy description, it has a high-speed Pursuit Mode and a military Battle Mode. Those modes change how you approach open areas, chase targets and solve encounters, making Knight feel more like a systems sandbox than a sequence of isolated brawls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TIME’s 2015 review also noted a practical interface change: Knight places every gadget in a single-tier selection circle. That makes quick selection more direct when you need to switch tools during movement or combat. The result is a wider action vocabulary, not necessarily a more precise one. You spend less time navigating a layered menu and more time deciding whether a gadget, a traversal move or the vehicle is the right answer.
Which combat feels better?
“Better” depends on what you want your attention on. City puts hand-to-hand rhythm first. Encounters are easier to read as a contest of timing, positioning and target selection. Knight gives you more ways to move and more tools to manage, including vehicle encounters. Players who enjoy juggling systems and changing tactics will find more variety in Knight; players who want every fight to foreground Batman’s martial flow may prefer City’s concentration.
The transition is not a reset. A City player already understands the basic counter language, enemy spacing and gadget timing. The adjustment is learning when Knight expects you to leave a rooftop, call the Batmobile or change modes. Conversely, a player who begins with Knight may find City’s simpler presentation cleaner but miss the option to solve a space from the road.
Story and tone
Arkham City is a contained villain ensemble
WB Games describes City as a new story set inside a heavily fortified district in Gotham, bringing classic Batman villains into one controlled environment. The confinement gives the plot a clear physical boundary: Batman is moving through one dangerous jurisdiction whose factions and threats are closely packed together.
Hill said the team spent as much time on side missions as on the main story and wanted a strong Batman story rather than adding characters as filler. That approach makes optional investigations feel like part of the same dramatic world instead of a checklist detached from the central conflict. The district’s density supports this structure: short travel routes and vertical shortcuts let a side case interrupt the main path without requiring a long commute.
Because the villains share one enclosed district, the tone is often immediate and local. A new lead can be only a glide away, and the skyline repeatedly brings you back to the same contested streets. That repetition is deliberate world-building rather than a lack of variety: the district becomes familiar enough for changes in control and threat to matter.

Arkham Knight is the citywide finale
DC frames Knight as the explosive finale. Scarecrow unites Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn and other villains against Batman, while the Arkham Knight arrives as a new threat. The conflict is therefore broader in both geography and stakes: several established enemies operate across Gotham while a new adversary gives the finale a distinct identity.
That scale changes the pacing. Knight can move from a main-story operation to a villain-focused activity, a vehicle mission or an interior investigation without leaving the same overarching crisis. The structure suits players who want a concluding chapter with many threads running at once. It can feel less concentrated than City because the game is deliberately managing a larger cast and more simultaneous objectives.
Recommended Free Tools
The finale framing also affects expectations. Knight is designed to pay off the wider series arc, while City works more like a self-contained crisis inside one district. Playing City first gives the returning villains and escalating stakes more context, but Knight still presents its central conflict as its own chapter.
This comparison avoids revealing the Arkham Knight’s identity. That twist is part of the game’s mystery and is not needed to understand the difference in story design.
Open-world design: district versus Gotham
City prioritises density and verticality
Arkham City is not all of Gotham. It is a fortified district, but Rocksteady designed it to be larger and more vertical than Arkham Asylum while preserving a focused story. Buildings, rooftops and streets are arranged for layered movement rather than a flat driving grid.
Batman can glide, dive and use grapple-boosting to cross the district without touching the ground. These tools make vertical routes meaningful: gaining height, dropping into a street or redirecting toward a ledge are navigation decisions, not merely animation transitions. Because destinations are relatively close, exploration often alternates between a main objective and a nearby discovery.
The district’s boundaries are part of its identity. You are not crossing a whole metropolis, but you are constantly changing elevation and angle within a compact space. That makes landmarks useful for orientation and keeps puzzle rooms, rooftops and alleys connected in your mental map.
Knight expands the footprint and the number of spaces
Knight presents Gotham across three islands connected by bridges. TIME described taller, more detailed buildings, more explorable interiors and quick-entry grates. Those additions make the city feel less like a single fortified arena and more like a set of connected urban zones with different approaches to movement.
The larger footprint supports more side activities and longer traversal lines. You can move by air as in City, but the Batmobile also provides ground-level speed and a distinct way to enter spaces. Quick-entry grates reduce the friction of reaching underground or enclosed objectives, while additional interiors make the boundary between open world and mission space less abrupt.

The trade-off is structural: Knight offers more room and more systems to use, while City’s smaller district keeps the authored route and the next nearby objective in view. A bigger map does not automatically mean a better map; Knight is preferable when you want room to roam, whereas City is preferable when you want nearly every detour to feel tightly placed.

Shared aerial movement
Both games make gliding, diving and grapple-boosting central to Batman’s mobility. In City, those abilities define how you read the district’s vertical geometry. In Knight, they remain important even after the vehicle arrives; roofs, streets and interior entrances create multiple layers rather than replacing aerial movement with driving.
Gliding is also a pacing tool. It lets Batman survey an area before committing, choose a landing point and preserve momentum between objectives. Grapple-boosting turns a ledge or street fixture into a launch point, while diving trades height for speed. These shared skills are why City remains a useful introduction even for someone who ultimately prefers Knight.
What the Batmobile changes
The drivable Batmobile is Knight’s signature mechanical addition and the clearest reason its world feels different. Pursuit Mode supports high-speed movement and chases. Battle Mode uses the vehicle’s military configuration for combat situations. Because the car is integrated into traversal, Knight can connect distant objectives without treating travel as dead time.
That integration also changes the rhythm of exploration. City asks you to maintain momentum through rooftops and alleys; Knight lets you choose between an aerial route and a vehicle route, then switch contexts as an encounter demands. If you dislike vehicle-focused sequences, this is the main caution when moving from City to Knight. If you enjoy changing tools and solving spaces from several angles, it is the game’s biggest advantage.

Progression, gadgets and optional content
City’s documented expansion
According to Hill’s 2011 interview, City raises the upgrade count from Arkham Asylum’s 20 to 33 and increases the gadget count from eight to 12. Those figures describe the breadth of Batman’s available development, not a promise that every upgrade is required to finish the main story.
The larger upgrade pool gives City room to support different habits. One player can prioritise combat responses, another can invest in traversal or gadget utility, and both can finish the central campaign without treating progression as a rigid skill tree. The important distinction from Knight is that these additions are presented inside a relatively compact district, so new abilities often reveal a nearby route or puzzle rather than opening an entirely new region.
City also contains 440 Riddler trophies, with each trophy tied to a puzzle. That number helps explain why the district can remain engaging after the central campaign: collectibles are not simply scattered objects but environmental problems that ask you to inspect routes, heights and devices.
Knight’s breadth is expressed through systems and activities
Knight’s defining expansion is less a single published count than the number of systems operating together: a larger map, additional interiors, vehicle traversal and vehicle combat alongside the established gadgets and side missions. The game’s optional content is built to use those systems, so completionists have more kinds of activity to alternate between.

Because no directly comparable authoritative total for map area or side-content volume is established, it is safer to describe Knight as broader rather than claim it is a specific percentage larger. The meaningful difference is experiential: City concentrates puzzles and missions within one vertical district, while Knight distributes activities across three islands and multiple travel modes.
Do not read the absence of a published Knight count as a weakness. It simply means the useful comparison is qualitative. City gives you a clearly documented 440-puzzle hunt; Knight gives you a wider network of activities that repeatedly asks you to combine movement, gadgets and the Batmobile.
Which game should you play first?
Choose Arkham City when you want focus
- You prefer a compact world where rooftops, streets and interiors are close together.
- You want combat that emphasises precise FreeFlow decisions over vehicle management.
- You value a contained villain ensemble and a story that keeps its main setting in view.
- You enjoy vertical navigation without a separate driving layer.
- You want a large, clearly documented puzzle hunt, including 440 Riddler trophies.
Choose Arkham Knight when you want scope
- You want to explore Gotham across three bridge-linked islands rather than one fortified district.
- You enjoy switching between gliding, grappling and a drivable vehicle.
- You want vehicle pursuits and Battle Mode alongside ordinary hand-to-hand encounters.
- You prefer more interiors, taller buildings and a wider selection of side activities.
- You are looking for the trilogy’s finale and a citywide conflict led by Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight.
Is Knight worth playing after City?
Yes, if you treat it as an expansion of the formula rather than a replacement for City’s tone. The core counters and gadgets provide continuity, so the learning curve is familiar. The new value comes from scale, vehicle systems, additional interiors and a finale structure that brings several villains together.
Players who found City’s concentrated pacing ideal should expect a more distributed campaign in Knight. The change is intentional: Knight is designed as a broader sandbox, not as another fortified-district mystery. Playing City first is useful because it lets you recognise the combat foundation before deciding how much of Knight’s added machinery you want to use.
Buying the games together or separately
Batman: Arkham Trilogy
Warner Bros. Games and DC announced Batman: Arkham Trilogy for Nintendo Switch, combining Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight with released downloadable content. It is the straightforward choice when you want both comparison points in one physical package and also want the first game in the trilogy. Check current regional stock, edition details and the platform listing before buying, because availability can change.
Individual editions
Buying separately makes sense when you already own one entry or only want a specific experience. The relevant product descriptions are Batman: Arkham Knight for PS4, Xbox One or PC, and Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition. Confirm the platform, included downloadable content and regional release information for the exact listing you are considering.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—settle
Feature counts and developer descriptions establish the design differences: City has 33 upgrades, 12 gadgets and 440 puzzle-linked Riddler trophies; Knight introduces the drivable Batmobile and expands Gotham to three connected islands with more interiors. They do not establish a universal winner, an exact map-area ratio or a directly comparable sales total.
That is why the most reliable recommendation is preference-based. City is the concentrated, vertical and villain-focused game. Knight is the larger, faster and more vehicle-oriented finale. Your choice should follow the kind of Batman sandbox you want to inhabit, not an unsupported claim that one map is objectively bigger by a particular measurement.

Is Arkham Knight’s map bigger than Arkham City’s?
Knight presents a wider version of Gotham across three bridge-linked islands, with taller buildings, more interiors and longer routes. City is a smaller fortified district designed around density and verticality. No authoritative source supplies a directly comparable area ratio, so the safe conclusion is that Knight feels broader rather than assigning a percentage.

Does Arkham Knight have better combat?
It has more combat contexts, not an objectively superior version. Both games use counters, strikes and gadgets. City adds simultaneous counters, projectile counters, beatdowns, enemy combo attacks and gadget combos to its readable FreeFlow. Knight keeps that foundation and adds vehicle combat and traversal, which suits players who enjoy switching systems.
Can I play Arkham Knight without playing Arkham City?
Yes, the core controls are learnable on their own, and Knight presents its citywide conflict as a distinct finale chapter. Playing City first is still recommended if you want the returning villains, escalating stakes and shared counter-and-gadget language to have more context.
Is Arkham City more focused than Arkham Knight?
Yes. City confines the action to one fortified district and keeps missions, puzzles and landmarks close together. Knight deliberately distributes objectives across three islands, interiors and vehicle routes. City usually feels more concentrated; Knight offers more simultaneous threads and optional activities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What does the Batmobile add in Arkham Knight?
The Batmobile is fully drivable and works as both transportation and a combat platform. Pursuit Mode supports high-speed travel and chases, while Battle Mode uses a military configuration for combat. It lets Knight connect distant objectives quickly but also makes vehicle-focused sequences a larger part of the overall rhythm.
Which game has more gadgets and upgrades?
Rocksteady game director Sefton Hill said Arkham City increased the upgrade count from 20 in Arkham Asylum to 33 and the gadget count from eight to 12. No directly comparable published total is established for Knight, so it is better described as broader in systems than ranked by an unsupported count.
How many Riddler trophies are in Arkham City?
Hill stated in a 2011 PlayStation Blog Q&A that City contains 440 Riddler trophies, each tied to a puzzle. They are environmental challenges involving routes, heights and devices, helping the compact district remain useful after the main story.
Should I buy Batman: Arkham Trilogy or an individual game?
Batman: Arkham Trilogy is the convenient Nintendo Switch package containing Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight with released downloadable content. Buy separately if you already own an entry or only want one style of experience. Verify the current platform, edition, regional stock and included downloadable content before purchase.
The Bottom Line
Pick Arkham City for density, vertical exploration and a tightly focused villain story. Pick Arkham Knight for three-island Gotham, more interiors, a wider activity set and the drivable Batmobile. City is the cleaner hand-to-hand showcase; Knight is the broader finale. Neither has an evidence-based claim to be universally better, so choose the map scale and combat rhythm you actually prefer.
