Bathymetric mapping and underwater photogrammetry answer different documentation questions. Bathymetry measures submerged depth and terrain, creating a spatially referenced surface that shows a ruin’s position, extent and relief. Photogrammetry reconstructs visible surfaces from overlapping photographs, producing a scaled 3D model, point cloud or photomosaic with image texture. For most submerged-ruin projects, bathymetry supplies the site-wide context while photogrammetry records accessible walls, objects and architectural details. Combining them is useful when the project can support both survey controls and image capture.
What each method actually measures
Bathymetric mapping measures depth and terrain
Bathymetric mapping records the elevation of the seafloor or submerged site relative to a vertical reference. Multibeam, single-beam and other sonar systems measure acoustic returns; some mapping programs also use lidar. The observations are processed into a terrain surface, depth grid, contours and related products. NOAA’s Standard Ocean Mapping Protocol treats equipment setup, calibration, positioning, sound-speed correction, water levels, quality control and uncertainty as integral parts of the survey rather than optional post-processing.
A bathymetric surface can show a wreck mound, exposed foundations, scour channels, sediment cover and the broader topographic setting. It does not, by itself, provide a photographic record of masonry texture, tool marks, inscriptions or color. Side-scan sonar is a separate product based largely on acoustic-return intensity: it can help identify objects and patterns, but side-scan imagery should not be described as equivalent to bathymetric depth data.

NOAA defines photogrammetry as “a method of approximating a three-dimensional (3D) structure using two dimensional images.” In practice, software finds matching features in many overlapping photographs, calculates camera positions, and generates a point cloud, mesh, textured model or photomosaic. NOAA’s photogrammetry overview describes planned routes with hundreds or thousands of still images taken from above, the sides and inside a structure by a diver or remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Video can also supply still frames when image quality and overlap are adequate.

The output preserves visual appearance wherever the camera could see clearly. It can document individual stones, fasteners, timber elements, cargo and biological growth at a level a terrain grid cannot. It cannot reconstruct surfaces hidden behind sediment, in deep shadow or outside the camera route, and turbid water can prevent reliable feature matching.
Comparison at a glance
| Decision axis | Bathymetric mapping | Underwater photogrammetry |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | What is the shape, depth and relief of the submerged terrain or site? | What does the visible structure look like in a scaled, image-based 3D record? |
| Typical evidence | Acoustic or lidar depth measurements processed into a bathymetric surface | Overlapping photographs processed into a point cloud, mesh, model or photomosaic |
| Spatial reach | Survey swaths from a vessel or uncrewed platform; coverage depends on sensor, navigation, depth and layout | Areas reached by the camera with sufficient visibility, viewpoints and image overlap |
| Appearance | Relief and depth; no photographic surface texture from bathymetry alone | Image texture and visible features, subject to lighting, water clarity and coverage |
| Critical controls | Calibration, navigation, coordinate reference, sound speed, water level, QA/QC and uncertainty | Overlap, camera viewpoints, lighting, stability, visibility, scale or control and image processing |
| Best ruins use | Site context, extent, terrain and broad relief | Detailed recording of accessible walls, objects and architectural surfaces |
This comparison synthesizes guidance from NOAA, the U.S. Navy and Massachusetts. The achievable result still depends on the site, equipment and survey design.
Choose the method by the question you need to answer
Use bathymetry for site-wide context
Choose bathymetry when you need to map the ruin’s footprint, depth range, relationship to channels or reefs, sediment around the site, or changes in relief across an area larger than a diver can photograph efficiently. A vessel, autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or other uncrewed platform can cover planned swaths while maintaining navigation and a common coordinate reference. Bathymetry is also the more practical first layer when visibility is poor but acoustic surveying remains safe and technically feasible.

Use photogrammetry for visible structural detail
Choose photogrammetry when the objective is a detailed record of accessible surfaces: wall courses, hull planks, carved elements, fittings, inscriptions or conservation features. It is especially valuable when the model must communicate appearance to archaeologists, conservators or the public, not merely elevation. The camera must see the feature from enough overlapping angles; an apparently short swim can require many passes around occluded or irregular geometry.
Low visibility is a decision point, not a simple winner
Suspended particles, backscatter and color loss reduce the number of reliable photographic matches. More lights do not solve every problem because they can increase backscatter. Acoustic systems are generally less dependent on optical clarity, but they require appropriate frequency, calibration, sound-speed information, navigation and processing. If water clarity changes during a project, plan a bathymetric baseline and treat photogrammetry as a targeted supplement where images remain usable.
Deep or hazardous sites favor remote platforms
The U.S. Navy’s Methods and Guidelines for Archaeological Fieldwork advises using equipment appropriate to the survey objectives and environmental conditions. ROVs and AUVs can carry cameras or sonar where depth, current, entanglement, contamination or collapse risk makes diver operations unsuitable. Remote operation does not remove the need for navigation, scale, calibration or a documented safety plan.

How to run a bathymetric survey of a ruin
- Define the survey boundary and vertical datum. State whether the deliverable is a site footprint, a regional terrain model, change detection or another product. Specify the horizontal coordinate reference and the water-level or vertical reference that will make future surveys comparable.
- Select the sensor and platform. Multibeam sonar provides multiple beams in a fan-shaped swath; single-beam systems sample along tracks. Phase-discriminating sonar, lidar and other systems may fit particular depths or water conditions. Match frequency, swath, draft, depth rating and platform maneuverability to the ruin and its surroundings.
- Calibrate and document the installation. Record sensor offsets, alignment, timing, sound-velocity measurements, navigation sources and calibration checks. Keep maintenance and configuration records so a later analyst can distinguish a real site change from a changed setup.
- Plan navigation and line coverage. Lay out overlapping lines or track patterns that cover the ruin and a margin of surrounding terrain. Account for turning room, tide or water-level changes, vessel motion, altitude and expected data gaps.
- Acquire raw observations and field notes. Preserve raw sonar files, navigation, sound-speed profiles, water levels, weather and operational notes. Mark anomalies such as bubbles, aeration, loss of bottom lock or interference rather than silently discarding them.
- Apply corrections and process the surface. Correct for sound speed, motion, timing, positioning and water level as appropriate to the system. Generate a gridded surface at a resolution supported by the sounding density; a visually smooth grid is not evidence of equivalent measurement detail.
- Run QA/QC and report uncertainty. Inspect coverage, cross-line consistency, outliers, gaps and independent checks. Deliver the coordinate reference, acquisition dates, processing versions, grid resolution, uncertainty statement and known limitations with the map.
Massachusetts guidance explains the distinction between multibeam bathymetry and side-scan imagery: multibeam beams map submerged topography, while side-scan emphasizes acoustic-return intensity. Use both when they answer different identification and terrain questions, and label each product correctly.

- Set the recording objective and scale. Decide whether the model is for visual interpretation, measurements, repeat monitoring or publication. Place surveyed scale bars, coded targets or other control that will remain visible in several images when dimensions or georeferencing matter.
- Plan a route before entering the water. Cover the structure from above, the sides and, where safe, inside openings. Keep a consistent distance and speed, add convergent views around corners, and plan extra passes for recesses and irregular objects. The route must produce overlap in all three dimensions, not just a straight sequence along one wall.
- Prepare camera, housing and lights. Use a housing rated beyond the working depth, a secure mount or tray, and lighting that avoids hot spots and deep shadow. Record camera model, lens, focus, aperture, shutter settings and lighting arrangement so repeat surveys can reproduce the setup.
- Control motion and visibility. Maintain a steady path, avoid stirring sediment, and pause only when necessary. Photograph when the water is clear enough for sharp feature edges; backscatter, changing exposure and moving vegetation can reduce matches.
- Capture and verify images in the field. Review sharpness, exposure, focus, overlap and coverage before leaving the site. A short test sequence can reveal reflections, vignetting or insufficient texture while a reshoot is still possible.
- Process with documented settings. Align images, inspect camera poses, remove poor frames, build the dense point cloud and mesh, and apply texture or mosaic products. Keep the original images and project files, not only an exported model.
- Scale, orient and validate the model. Apply scale bars or surveyed control, check distances against independent measurements, and record residuals or other quality indicators. State which surfaces were not imaged and where interpolation or holes remain.
The U.S. Navy guidelines discuss camera and lighting placement and image overlap, but their operational examples are not universal settings. Water clarity, camera and lens, desired ground sampling distance, current, lighting and platform stability should determine the route and spacing.

A USGS publication, Accurate bathymetric maps from underwater digital imagery without ground control, reports millimeter-to-centimeter-scale results for a specific workflow using five rigidly mounted, downward-looking cameras synchronized with survey-grade GNSS. That performance belongs to the described platform and test setting; it should not be generalized to ordinary diver photography or every underwater site.

Can sonar and photogrammetry be combined?
Yes, when the project benefits from two scales of evidence and can maintain compatible references. A practical combined workflow is:
- Run a controlled bathymetric survey to establish the site position, surrounding terrain and broad relief.
- Use the bathymetric surface to plan safe camera routes, identify exposed features and define the area requiring detailed images.
- Collect photogrammetry on accessible structures with scale bars or surveyed targets.
- Orient the image model in the same coordinate reference as the bathymetry using control points, identifiable features or a documented registration process.
- Publish the products as distinct layers: terrain depth, image-derived geometry and photographic texture. Explain the registration method and any portions that were aligned visually rather than surveyed.
Do not merge a detailed-looking mesh into a bathymetric grid and imply that every pixel has the same measurement basis. Bathymetry fills broad spatial context; photogrammetry fills visible detail. Their resolutions, uncertainties and blind spots remain different after registration.

There is no evidence-based universal accuracy winner between the two methods. Accuracy depends on sensor geometry, control, navigation, water conditions, processing and the feature being measured. A dense photographic model can have excellent relative detail but weak absolute scale if it lacks control. A well-controlled sonar survey can position terrain reliably while missing fine architectural surfaces.

The National Park Service publications index lists a comparison of underwater structure-from-motion photogrammetry with real-time kinematic survey at the East Key Construction Wreck, but the available listing does not provide numerical findings. The NPS assessment of mechanical scanning sonar discusses comparison with archaeological drawings and hull documentation. Neither reference supports a single percentage or a blanket claim that one method is more accurate for all ruins.
Report the resolution and uncertainty that your own controls support. Distinguish grid cell size from actual bathymetric accuracy, and distinguish a model’s triangle density from the precision of its dimensions. Include independent check measurements where possible.
How to document underwater ruins responsibly
Before fieldwork
- Define the archaeological questions, required scale, geographic extent, vertical datum and repeat-survey interval.
- Obtain permits, consult site-management authorities and follow applicable cultural-resource, diving and vessel-safety rules.
- Choose diver, ROV, AUV or vessel operations according to depth, current, entanglement, contamination and collapse hazards.
- Prepare a data-management plan covering raw files, backups, naming, coordinate references, processing software and access restrictions.
During acquisition
- Log date, time, platform, sensor or camera configuration, water conditions, visibility, current and personnel.
- Preserve raw observations and original photographs; do not rely only on screenshots or a decimated web model.
- Record gaps, obstructions, sediment disturbance, navigation outages and any change from the planned route.
- Minimize contact with the ruin and avoid moving artifacts or scraping surfaces merely to improve imagery.
For monitoring and repeat surveys
NOAA notes that submerged archaeological sites can change through deterioration, salinity, pH, sediment erosion, currents and human disturbance. Repeat surveys are meaningful only when dates, methods, references, control, processing choices and uncertainty are preserved. A later model should be compared with the original evidence, not just with a rendered image whose settings are unknown.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling every acoustic image bathymetry. Label depth surfaces, side-scan imagery and other sonar products separately.
- Photographing a ruin in a single loop. Add overhead, side, convergent and interior views so software can see the same features from multiple angles.
- Ignoring scale. Add visible scale bars or surveyed control when measurements, georeferencing or change detection are required.
- Assuming more triangles mean more accuracy. Validate dimensions independently and report control and residuals.
- Using universal camera-spacing advice. Adapt overlap and distance to lens, visibility, desired detail, current, lighting and structure geometry.
- Discarding raw data after export. Archive originals, navigation, calibration, control, processing parameters and final products together.
- Overlooking access and safety. A technically ideal route is unacceptable if it requires unsafe penetration, contact with fragile fabric or operation beyond platform limits.
A practical selection checklist
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Add or reconsider… |
|---|---|---|
| Regional setting, footprint or relief | Bathymetric mapping | Photogrammetry for selected structures |
| Visible masonry, objects or texture | Underwater photogrammetry | Bathymetry for orientation and surrounding terrain |
| Very low optical visibility | Bathymetry or sonar reconnaissance | Photogrammetry only in clear, controlled pockets |
| Deep or hazardous access | ROV or AUV survey matched to the objective | Remote camera imaging where visibility permits |
| Repeat change detection | Either method with fixed references and documented controls | The other method if it captures a missing scale or surface type |
For uncrewed marine-vehicle mapping projects, consult the current technical requirements in ISO 25451:2026 alongside project-specific hydrographic and archaeological standards.
