To connect production stages, record the upstream batch ID—or IDs—on each new batch record or in its stage log. Those references link otherwise isolated records into a lineage graph: follow parent IDs backward to find inputs, or follow child records forward to identify outputs affected by a suspect input. This can be done at the application or logging layer when the existing system can store and resolve the references; it is not a universal guarantee that no schema or workflow changes will be needed.
What batch lineage solves
Stage logs can contain accurate event data and still fail to answer a basic traceability question: “what upstream inputs actually went into this specific unit of output?” The gap is the relationship between records. Without that relationship, a finished batch may not reveal which earlier batches fed it.
A parent reference supplies that link. Each new batch record points to the upstream batch or batches that contributed to it. Across stages, those references form a directed graph rather than a collection of disconnected logs. I SOL’s manufacturing example describes this pattern using configurable production logs. Read the example on DEV Community.

How to trace a batch through its stages
Trace backward from a finished batch
- Start with the identifier for the finished unit or packaged batch under investigation.
- Look up that record and read its parent batch ID or IDs.
- Resolve each parent in the appropriate upstream stage log, then repeat until you reach the input or receiving records you need.
This is useful for investigating a complaint about a particular output: the path leads from the output to the batches that contributed to it.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Trace forward from a suspect input
- Start with the ID of the flagged input batch.
- Find records that list that ID as a parent.
- Continue looking up children at each downstream stage until you reach the affected finished batches.
Forward tracing is more than looking up the input record itself. The system needs a usable way to find child records by parent ID, or another mechanism to traverse those relationships.
Worked example: a cheese-production chain
I SOL’s example follows receiving, mix preparation, cooking, drying or ripening, optional smoking, and packaging. For one packaged batch, the example finds two cooking-batch parents. A search for the mix ID returns five cooking batches that used the same mix; two of those relate to the packaged batch under investigation. Following the mix upstream reaches two milk batches and their receiving records. These are counts from the article’s illustrative scenario, not general production statistics or performance results.

The same graph supports the opposite direction. Starting with a flagged milk batch, an investigator can follow its descendants through a mix and multiple cooking runs to the packaged batches that may be affected. That requires child lookup across stages; merely writing a parent value is not enough if the records cannot be searched or traversed.
What to verify before relying on parent IDs
- Storage: Confirm that the current record or stage log can hold the parent reference. A configurable log may allow this at the application layer, but the example does not establish compatibility with every existing database or logging system.
- Stable identity: Check that each batch ID is unique within the scope where it will be looked up and remains resolvable for as long as traceability is required.
- Multiple inputs: A downstream batch may combine more than one upstream batch. The record format and entry process must allow all relevant parent IDs, not just one.
- Downstream lookup: Determine how users will find all records that name a given batch as a parent. This is essential for impact analysis from an input toward its descendants.
- Consistent entry and retention: Decide how references will be recorded at each stage and ensure the linked logs remain available. Missing or inconsistent references break the path.
These are implementation checks, not claims that every existing system can adopt the pattern unchanged. The DEV example demonstrates one configurable-log approach; it does not establish that no database, workflow, retention, or data-quality changes will be needed in a particular installation.

Batch genealogy is not the same as job-run lineage
Physical batch lineage records which material batches contributed to other batches. Job lineage records which software jobs or runs triggered or produced other runs. Both represent parent-child relationships, but their identifiers and meanings are different.
For a parent run in Airflow’s OpenLineage integration, the direct parent reference requires three fields together: parent run ID, parent job name, and parent job namespace. Airflow’s version 2.20.2 provider documentation says, “If any of the three parent fields are missing, no parent facet will be created.” For full hierarchy, it recommends supplying all six parent and root identifiers. See Airflow’s job hierarchy documentation.

Airflow documents automatic hierarchy for task instances and DAG runs within a single DAG. When a DAG run is triggered through the REST API, parent or root context can be included in the run configuration. Across external child jobs, parent job information must be passed explicitly or through an injection mechanism.

Passing parent context to external jobs
The OpenLineage dbt integration documents ways to pass that context, including the OPENLINEAGE_CONTEXT environment variable with parent run and job identity, a legacy OPENLINEAGE_PARENT_ID string, or a programmatic ParentRunMetadata object. See the OpenLineage dbt integration documentation. These mechanisms concern job execution metadata; they are not substitutes for physical batch IDs in production records.

When a framework-managed repository is different
Some frameworks keep execution metadata in defined repository tables. The archived Spring Batch reference describes tables for job instances, executions, parameters, and steps, illustrating a framework-managed model. See the Spring Batch metadata schema reference. That contrast does not show that those tables are required for application-level batch references, nor does it determine what a specific existing system must change.
