A basketball player insights MCP server connects an AI application to Sportmicro’s basketball data through a small, typed tool interface. The key design choice is to return only fields the upstream API documents—not to invent missing statistics or imply that MCP supplies the data itself. Before building, check whether Sportmicro’s existing MCP package already covers your use case.
What the server does—and what it does not
Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives an AI host a standard way to access server-provided tools, resources, and prompts. MCP uses JSON-RPC 2.0 for communication; the server’s tools are the bridge to an external service, not a source of basketball statistics by themselves. The MCP specification describes these capabilities and the protocol.
In this integration, Sportmicro is the upstream data provider. Its basketball documentation lists a Players endpoint, while its broader API page describes data covering areas such as players, teams, schedules, results, and performance. The title-matched tutorial describes a focused TypeScript module intended to expose documented player and player-statistics data. Its governing rule is useful: preserve the boundary between what the API returns and what a client might wish it returned. Check the existing Sportmicro MCP package first
Sportmicro now documents a published npm package named @sportmicro/sportmicro-mcp-server. Its guide says to provide SPORTMICRO_API_KEY and run it with npx -y @sportmicro/sportmicro-mcp-server. The documented tools include player lookup by team, generic calls to documented endpoints, and other areas such as teams, standings, live matches, and match details. A custom server is worth considering when you need a narrower tool surface, stricter input validation, or a response format tailored to your application. It also means you own the integration code and must keep its assumptions aligned with the upstream API. The vendor package is the simpler starting point when its documented tools already meet the requirement; the available documentation does not establish that a custom server is faster or more capable.
Confirm the player endpoint contract before coding
The basketball documentation index identifies a Players endpoint, but the reviewed landing page does not establish its complete response schema, exact authentication header, or every supported query. Do not choose a player identifier, promise particular fields, or claim that a statistic is available based only on the endpoint’s name. Open the endpoint-specific documentation and verify the current request and response details first.

- Identify the documented endpoint and the query parameters it actually accepts.
- Confirm the required credential and authentication method from current API documentation; do not infer a header or credential format.
- Record the exact response fields, including any identifiers and season or team context needed to interpret a value.
- Check how the API represents no matches and upstream errors, if that behavior is documented.
If the documentation does not establish a field or behavior, treat it as unknown. The safe response is to omit unsupported claims—not to fill gaps with estimates or data from another provider.
Design tools around supported queries
Keep each MCP tool’s name and arguments aligned with a documented Sportmicro operation. A player lookup tool is appropriate only if the upstream endpoint supports the identifier or filters that the tool accepts. Avoid offering broad arguments that the API cannot honor, or returning a field simply because a client asked for it.
Validate tool inputs before making an upstream request. For the TypeScript project described in the tutorial, Zod is reported as the input-validation dependency alongside the MCP SDK. Validation should reject malformed or unsupported inputs with a clear error rather than silently changing the query. Because the endpoint contract is not fully established by the documentation landing page, exact argument names and schemas must come from the endpoint-specific docs.

Keep the data path simple: accept a defined query, validate it, call the documented upstream operation, and return the fields actually present in the response. Distinguish an empty result from invalid input, missing credentials, and an upstream failure where the API and implementation allow those cases to be identified. Do not turn a failed request into a plausible-looking player profile.
Preserve context and separate facts from presentation
Return relevant identifiers and any season or team context supplied by the API so the AI client can tell what a value refers to. Preserve the meaning of the upstream response when shaping it for a tool result; if a field is absent, leave it absent rather than synthesizing a value. This helps prevent a client from presenting a statistic without its context or treating a missing value as zero.
Keep presentation decisions separate from the factual data layer. The server can make the documented response easier for an AI client to consume, but it should not silently substitute a different provider, infer an unreturned statistic, or label derived values as Sportmicro data.

Build and run the TypeScript project
The tutorial reports a focused TypeScript project with dependencies on @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, Zod, TypeScript, and Node type definitions. It also reports npm run build, npm start, and npm test scripts, with a compiled runtime entry point. These are details attributed to that article, not independently checked against its repository. After checking out the project, inspect its package manifest and current instructions before relying on any script or entry point.
- Install the project’s declared dependencies. Follow the checked-out repository’s instructions and package manager configuration; do not assume a particular lockfile or install command.
- Set the required API credential. Use the credential name and authentication method established by the current Sportmicro documentation and the project’s configuration. Never commit a live key to source control.
- Build the TypeScript project. If the checked-out manifest defines the reported script, run
npm run buildand resolve compilation errors before launching the server. - Start it through the documented entry point. The article reports
npm start; confirm the script’s current behavior in the manifest and configure the MCP host to launch the correct process and transport. - Run the project tests. The article reports
npm test. Confirm that the current manifest defines this script, and use the results to check validation, response handling, and error cases.
Keep stdio transport clean

Verify behavior with realistic cases
Test the server against the current endpoint contract and the failure cases it can distinguish. The goal is to verify that the tool reports API data faithfully, not to demonstrate statistics that the endpoint documentation does not promise.
- A valid query returns only documented fields and preserves relevant identifiers or context.
- A malformed or unsupported argument is rejected clearly before it can become a misleading upstream request.
- A valid query with no matching player is not presented as an API outage or as a fabricated profile.
- Missing credentials and upstream failures produce distinguishable errors when the implementation can identify them.
- For stdio, diagnostic output does not appear in stdout alongside protocol messages.
