The title’s four-model comparison cannot be treated as a verified benchmark result: the available account does not identify the models, tasks, machine, harness error, or scores. What can be established is that Bash version and shell selection matter on macOS. Apple’s current Terminal guide says the default login shell is zsh, while Apple’s public Bash source repository contains a Bash 3.2 source tree. Neither fact tells you which shell or Bash executable a particular session used.
What the benchmark title establishes
The title says a harness failed before a benchmark of four models could be completed. Without the benchmark artifact, code, or logs, it does not establish which models were tested, what they were asked to do, where the harness failed, or whether any valid comparative measurements were produced. No ranking, score, pass rate, runtime, or model-performance conclusion can be drawn from the title alone.
To report a comparison responsibly, the underlying record needs to identify the four model names and versions, the exact tasks and prompts, harness code and version, error logs, and whether the failure occurred before model calls, during them, or during scoring. It should also record macOS release, hardware, Bash executable path and version, repetitions, scoring criteria, exclusions, and reruns. If the harness failed before valid measurements, the result is that no valid comparison was produced.

Apple’s current Terminal User Guide states, “The default shell is zsh.” Terminal can also be configured to open another shell by specifying its complete path. So the default interactive login shell and the Bash executable supplied with macOS are separate questions. A script or benchmark described as running on “Bash on a Mac” should say which shell session launched it and which executable actually ran.

Apple’s public Bash source repository includes a bash-3.2 source tree. That establishes an Apple-maintained or distributed Bash 3.2 source line; it does not prove that every current Mac has the same installed binary or that a particular session invoked it. Check the actual executable and version rather than inferring them from the operating system name.

echo "$SHELL"
type -a bash
/bin/bash --version
bash --version
$SHELL indicates the configured login shell, while type -a bash shows Bash commands available through the current shell’s command lookup. Comparing /bin/bash --version with bash --version can reveal whether the system path and the executable found through PATH are different. For a reproducible report, record the exact path and version used to launch the script; do not rely on the version of a different shell window.
Why a script works on one Mac but fails on another
Shell syntax and behavior vary by shell and version. The GNU Bash Reference Manual, Edition 5.3, documents one-dimensional indexed and associative arrays. Indexed arrays use zero-based indices; associative arrays use string keys, with empty strings unavailable as keys. These are Bash features, and the 5.3 manual describes that edition’s behavior—it does not establish when each feature first appeared.

A script using Bash-specific syntax may fail if it is run by a different shell, or by a Bash version that does not support the syntax it relies on. GNU describes Bash as an sh-compatible shell, but compatibility with sh does not mean every Bash-specific script runs in every shell. For portability, verify the interpreter the script requests, the executable available at that path, and the features the script uses.
When diagnosing a difference between two Macs, compare the actual Bash path and version, macOS release, and whether Terminal is using its default login shell or a separately selected shell. Those details help distinguish a shell-selection problem from a version-compatibility issue.

How to make a four-model benchmark reproducible
- Identify the environment: record the macOS release, hardware, shell, and exact Bash path and version.
- Identify each model: give the name and version for all four models.
- Freeze the workload: publish the same task and prompt set used for each model, along with the harness version.
- Locate the failure: use logs to show whether it occurred before model calls, during model calls, or in evaluation.
- Explain measurement: report the number of runs, scoring criteria, exclusions, and reruns.
- Limit the conclusion to valid data: do not rank models if the harness did not produce comparable measurements.
