A “barebone” label does not tell you exactly what is in the box. Depending on the product, it may describe a compact motherboard, a mini PC kit with a processor and cooling already installed, or a system that still needs memory and storage. Check the exact model and SKU before you buy, then match every add-on part to that model’s specifications.
What does “barebone motherboard” mean?
“Barebone motherboard” is not a standardized product category with a fixed list of included parts. Buyers may use the phrase for a standalone compact board, a partially configured mini PC, or a kit built around a particular board and processor. Those products differ in what they include and what you can upgrade.
For example, Intel describes its NUC 12 Extreme / Pro X as a barebones PC kit that includes a processor, memory slots, wireless and Bluetooth hardware, M.2 storage slots, and integrated cooling. By contrast, ASUS says the ExpertCenter PN64 barebone ships without memory or storage. ASRock’s legacy DeskMini 110/COM is a compact system built around a socketed processor. Treat these as examples of different configurations, not definitions of all barebone products.

The deciding evidence is the manufacturer’s included-items list and specification for the exact SKU. A product family can also have both barebone and preconfigured versions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What should you check before choosing one?
Compare the parts you will receive with the parts and setup work you will need to supply. Use the manufacturer’s page and manual for the exact model, not just a similar product name.
- Included hardware: Check whether the CPU, motherboard, enclosure, power supply or adapter, cooler, wireless hardware, RAM, and storage are included.
- Operating system: Confirm whether an OS is included or must be installed separately.
- Processor and upgrade limits: Find out whether the CPU is fixed or socketed, and check supported generations and thermal limits.
- Memory: Check DDR generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, speed, voltage, capacity, slot count, and ECC support.
- Storage: Verify the supported interface and protocol, drive length, number of slots or bays, and supported configuration.
- Expansion and connectivity: Review ports, networking, wireless, display outputs, and PCIe capability against your needs.
- Space and cooling: Check system dimensions, cooling design, fan clearance, and drive fit.
- Complete cost: Add any required memory, storage, OS, peripherals, and assembly or setup costs before comparing the kit with a ready-to-use PC.
How do you check memory compatibility?
Memory is model-specific. Intel’s guidance for NUC systems says to check the product specification for memory generation, speed, voltage, form factor, total capacity, slot count, and ECC support. A module with the right capacity can still be incompatible if its generation or physical form factor is wrong. DIMMs and SO-DIMMs are not interchangeable.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Identify the exact model and SKU. Product names can cover versions with different memory limits.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification or compatibility list. Intel directs NUC buyers to its component compatibility tool; components not listed there are not guaranteed to work.
- Match every listed memory detail. Check the generation, module type, supported speed and voltage, slot count, maximum capacity, and ECC support.
- Confirm the proposed configuration. Check whether the total capacity and the number and size of modules are supported together.
Intel’s article How to Check Memory Compatibility for Intel NUCs gives model-level guidance. Use the official specification for your particular system as the final check.

“M.2” describes a physical card format; it does not, by itself, confirm that a drive’s protocol or length is supported. A system may support NVMe, SATA, or only a particular configuration, and it may have limits on the number and dimensions of drives.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check whether the model supports M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, a 2.5-inch SATA drive, or another interface.
- Match the drive’s physical length to the supported slot or bay dimensions.
- Confirm how many drives can be installed and whether the stated configuration depends on the processor or SKU.
- Check the manual for installation and cooling requirements.
ASUS lists M.2 NVMe support for the ExpertCenter PN64 barebone, while other compact systems can expose different interfaces and bays. Check your exact product’s specifications rather than assuming that support transfers across a product family.
How do real barebone configurations differ?
| Example | What the cited manufacturer information establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Intel NUC 12 Extreme / Pro X Kit | Intel’s 2022 specification describes a barebones kit with a processor, chipset, memory slots, wireless, Bluetooth, M.2 storage slots, and integrated heat sink/fan. | Check current availability, support, and the exact kit’s included items before buying. |
| ASUS ExpertCenter PN64 Barebone | ASUS says memory and storage are not included at shipment. Its specifications describe memory capacity as model- or CPU-dependent and list M.2 NVMe support. | Confirm the precise SKU’s memory limit and storage configuration. |
| ASUS MiniPC PB63 Barebone | ASUS distinguishes the barebone SKU from configured versions; its barebone configuration ships without memory and has specified memory limits. | Check the product page for the version and capacity limits you intend to use. |
| ASRock DeskMini 110/COM | This legacy Mini-STX example uses an LGA1151 socket and specifies supported processor generations and thermal limits, DDR4 SO-DIMM memory, and M.2/SATA storage. | Use its own legacy specifications for this model only; its compatibility is not a guide to current systems. |
What does a compact form factor change?
Small systems can constrain both expansion and component fit. Intel’s small-form-factor guide notes that many Mini-ITX boards have two RAM slots and discusses memory-channel configuration and storage fit as planning considerations. Fewer slots can limit future memory upgrades, while compact enclosures can restrict cooling options or drive placement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Decide how much capacity and upgrade room you need before prioritizing a smaller system. Compare the actual product’s size, ports, cooling, supported drives, and memory configuration; the Mini-ITX observation does not automatically apply to every barebone kit.
What setup work remains after purchase?
A kit can require more than installing hardware. Intel’s NUC getting-started checklist includes selecting compatible components and peripherals, updating the BIOS, installing an operating system, and installing drivers. Follow the manual for the exact model, since the order and requirements can vary.
