You do not need a VPN just to use Google’s chatbot, and the available evidence does not support naming five VPNs that reliably unlock it. Google renamed Bard to Gemini on February 8, 2024. Gemini’s web app is supported in many—but not all—countries and territories; check Google’s current country list before choosing a workaround.
What happened to Bard?
Google’s chatbot is now called Gemini. On February 8, 2024, Google announced the change, with Vice President and General Manager Sissie Hsiao writing, “To reflect this, Bard will now simply be known as Gemini.” Google’s announcement explains the transition.
That name change matters when searching for a VPN: current availability and privacy information is published for Gemini, not Bard. A VPN is a separate service that can route your internet traffic through another network location; it does not change the chatbot’s name or Google’s published eligibility rules.
Do you need a VPN to use Gemini?
No VPN requirement appears in the Google help information available here. Google says Gemini’s web app is available in more than 70 languages and over 230 countries and territories. Those figures describe web availability on a live support page, not a guarantee that every feature is offered in every place. Check Google’s current Gemini web app availability list for your country and language.

Google documents mobile availability separately: Gemini mobile apps are available in more than 150 countries, according to its live help page. Web and mobile coverage are not interchangeable, so consult Google’s Gemini mobile app availability page if you plan to use the app.
Can a VPN unlock Gemini in an unsupported country?
The sources do not establish that a VPN reliably grants access where Gemini is unavailable. Changing the apparent IP location may affect how a service sees a connection, but it does not establish that the account, app, features, or local use are eligible. Google says expansion is subject to local regulations and its AI principles; a VPN cannot establish or override those conditions.

- Availability and policies can change, so rely on Google’s current support pages rather than an old list or an unverified access claim.
What a VPN does—and does not do—for Gemini privacy
A VPN may be useful for general connection privacy, such as routing traffic through a VPN provider’s network. It does not make a Gemini conversation anonymous to Google or determine how Google processes prompts. Google’s privacy information says Gemini may process prompts and material users provide. It also describes general location inferred from an IP address and, when permission is granted, precise location from a device.

Read Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub for the current details. The hub was updated September 24, 2026, and the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice within it was updated June 29, 2026. It distinguishes signed-in Gemini use from signed-out use covered by Google’s general Privacy Policy. A VPN changes the network path; it does not establish that precise device location is hidden or that account-related conditions change.

How to choose a VPN if you want one for ordinary privacy
There is not enough provider-specific evidence here to rank five VPNs or call any one the best for Gemini. If you want a VPN for general connection privacy, evaluate the service itself rather than claims that it can bypass Gemini’s availability rules.
- Privacy documentation: Look for a clear logging policy and independently documented audits; check what the audit covered and when it was performed.
- Supported devices and locations: Confirm that the provider supports your operating systems and the locations you need. This does not mean Gemini is available in those locations.
- Connection stability and speed: Compare evidence gathered under a disclosed test method, especially if you expect to use video, voice, or other bandwidth-sensitive features.
- Security features and support: Review the provider’s documented protections, troubleshooting guidance, and customer-support options.
- Full cost and terms: Check renewal pricing, cancellation terms, and any limits before subscribing.
These are criteria for assessing a VPN service, not verified recommendations. No provider-level privacy, speed, price, reliability, or Gemini-access comparison is established by the cited Google materials.
