Not automatically. Banks are exploring tokenized deposits and securities on bank-controlled, shared, and public-ledger systems. Chainlink has announced an infrastructure role in connecting institutions to Swift’s blockchain ledger, while XRPL has several named tokenization initiatives. Neither activity, on its own, proves that LINK or XRP is required or that its holders capture meaningful economic value.
What does “banks are tokenizing everything” actually mean?
Tokenization represents an asset or financial claim in digital-token form on a distributed ledger. The phrase can refer to different things: a bank issuing tokens that represent its own deposits, an issuer recording fund or security ownership on a ledger, or a financial-market utility using a ledger to coordinate transfers or mirror records. Those uses are not interchangeable, and they do not necessarily use the same ledger or require a public crypto token.
Swift said in July 2026 that its blockchain ledger was ready for initial use, with 17 banks preparing to pilot live tokenized-deposit transactions. Swift describes the ledger as an orchestration layer for deposits issued on participating banks’ own ledgers; final settlement would take place through existing systems. Separately, Wells Fargo announced tokenized deposits for corporate and commercial clients on its proprietary blockchain platform, and The Clearing House announced a bank-led initiative for interbank clearing and settlement within the existing banking framework. These are examples of institutional activity, not evidence that banks are adopting LINK or XRP.

How could tokenization benefit a crypto token?
A tokenization project can benefit a technology provider or ledger without creating material demand for that network’s native token. To make a case for token-holder value, investors need to establish a chain of evidence: the institution uses the network in production; use requires or generates demand for the token; that demand is substantial and persistent; and some of the resulting value accrues to token holders rather than only to a company, service provider, or other participants.

Partnership announcements, asset counts, network features, or transaction activity do not prove those links. The March 2026 guidance from the OCC and other federal banking agencies underscores that tokenization changes how ownership rights are represented, not the legal and risk framework that applies. The agencies said banks holding tokenized securities must use sound risk management and comply with applicable laws.
What role has Chainlink announced?
On September 28, 2026, Chainlink announced work to help financial institutions connect their systems and key-signing infrastructure to Swift’s blockchain ledger. In the described setup, the Chainlink Runtime Environment orchestrates workflows while institutions retain control of the keys that authorize transactions. That is a specific connectivity and orchestration role; it does not mean deposits on Swift’s ledger are LINK tokens, or that every participant must use LINK.

Chainlink also describes a fee mechanism in which off-chain and on-chain revenue from enterprise adoption is converted into LINK and held in a Chainlink Reserve. That is a potential route from enterprise activity to LINK demand, as presented by Chainlink. The announcement does not disclose revenue from the Swift relationship, LINK acquired through it, or a measured effect on LINK’s market value. The mechanism should therefore be treated as a stated model, not proof of realized value capture.

What role has XRPL announced?
XRPL provides a ledger with native tokenization features. Its documentation describes issuer authorization, freeze controls, metadata, and multi-signature accounts—features that can support issuance and administration of tokenized assets. Their availability does not establish that every asset on the ledger requires XRP for settlement or that asset value flows to XRP holders.
Ripple reported on September 29, 2026, that CSD BR would begin using XRPL as an additional layer to record and audit assets, initially fund shares from BTG Pactual. CSD BR’s systems remain the official source of record for registration, deposit, and settlement. This is an announced use of XRPL alongside regulated infrastructure, not evidence that all Brazilian securities or banks use the ledger.

Other announcements are at earlier or exploratory stages. Ripple and Aviva Investors announced in February 2026 an intention to collaborate on tokenizing traditional fund structures on XRPL, with work planned over 2026 and beyond. In September 2025, DBS, Franklin Templeton, and Ripple signed an MoU to explore trading and lending involving tokenized money-market fund units and RLUSD on XRPL. DBS said it would explore whether fund tokens could be used as collateral; the MoU is not proof of an operating lending product.
These projects show institutional tokenization efforts involving XRPL at different stages. They do not establish that banks broadly require XRP, or that fees, liquidity needs, or asset activity will create material XRP demand. The announcements do not quantify those effects.

The practical comparison is not simply “which blockchain wins.” Ask who controls the ledger and keys, which record is legally authoritative, where final settlement occurs, what privacy and compliance controls apply, and whether a project is in production, piloting, or only exploring a use case. In Swift’s description, final settlement remains in existing systems; for CSD BR, the depository’s systems remain authoritative.
What would investors need to verify?
- Actual token use: Is LINK or XRP required for the specific service, or can institutions use it without holding or spending the token?
- Economic pathway: Are fees paid in the token, converted into it, or used to build reserves or liquidity? Who receives that value?
- Scale and persistence: Is usage recurring and large enough to matter, rather than a pilot, announcement, or one-off transaction?
- Project maturity: Separate operating systems from initial-use readiness, pilots, memoranda of understanding, and intentions.
- Settlement and authority: Identify the legally authoritative record and the system that completes settlement; a ledger copy or coordination layer may not replace either.
Network-published figures should be read in context, not as token-return evidence. The XRP Ledger homepage reported 8 million-plus funded accounts and more than $1 trillion in value moved in 2026; those network figures do not measure how much value accrued to XRP holders. Chainlink’s 2026 roundup cited a Swift network of more than 11,500 banks; that figure is attributed to Chainlink’s roundup and says nothing by itself about LINK use or demand.
