To reduce wrong bank-balance readings, software engineer Okeke Chukwudubem added three checks to his phone-controlling agent: currency-format validation, repeated OCR reads, and a configured value range. He reports improved results in his own tests, but the method is not a guarantee of correctness—and his account describes reading and forwarding a balance, not making a bank transaction.
Why the agent misread balances
In a preceding multi-app task, Chukwudubem says his agent read a bank balance and sent it to his mother over WhatsApp. He reports that the agent initially misread financial numbers about 20% of the time. He regarded a wrong balance as more consequential than an ordinary messaging typo.
In his account, the banking apps he checked did not expose UI labels or content descriptions for the balance, leaving the agent to rely on OCR. He identifies small, condensed text, low contrast, and currency punctuation as possible sources of error. For example, he says OCR could turn “₦15,000” into “₦15.000,” “₦15,00,” or “₦15000.” These are observations from his project, not an industry-wide measurement of banking-app accessibility or OCR performance.
What checks he added before saving a number
Chukwudubem describes a verification layer that runs before a financial number is stored in task memory. Its safeguards target different problems: an implausible format, disagreement between reads, and a value outside a configured range.

1. Check the currency format
The extracted text must match a currency format containing a symbol and digits. The author gives ₦, $, £, and € as examples, and allows commas and a decimal point. This can flag malformed text, but a well-formed string is not necessarily the correct balance: “₦15.000,” for instance, may still be ambiguous without knowing the app’s formatting conventions.
2. Read the screen more than once
The agent takes two screenshots and runs separate OCR passes. If the readings differ, it takes a third reading; if two of the three agree, it accepts that value. If all three differ, it aborts the task with an error. Chukwudubem says this double-read confirmation adds about 4–6 seconds to a task involving financial data. He reports about 10–15 seconds of added time in a three-app workflow.

Agreement is evidence of consistency, not proof of truth. If the same display conditions lead OCR to make the same mistake repeatedly, two or even three matching readings can still be wrong. The post does not describe checking the result against an independent source of truth.

3. Reject values outside a configured range
The example range is ₦1 to ₦1,000,000,000; a parsed value outside it triggers another read. A bound can catch some implausible results, but it must fit the account and task. Chukwudubem explicitly notes that the rule would reject a legitimate ₦0 balance. A retry also does not resolve the problem if the range itself is inappropriate.

What results did the author report?
In his project log, Chukwudubem reports 94% accuracy across 50 banking-app balance attempts, compared with about 80% before the checks. He also reports 100% accuracy in 20 attempts involving “₦15,000.” For the balance-to-message task, he says it succeeded 19 times out of 20, with the remaining failure usually a timeout rather than a misread.
These are the author’s figures, not independently validated OCR benchmarks. His post does not give enough testing detail to establish how attempts were sampled, whether they were independent, or exactly how accuracy was scored. The results therefore describe his prototype and test attempts; they should not be generalized to other apps, OCR systems, or financial automation.

What the verification layer does not check
The described safeguards apply to numbers. Chukwudubem says names, addresses, and transaction descriptions remain unverified and could also be misread. His listed next steps were to add text verification, test with multiple real transactions, and make a demo video; the post does not establish that he completed them.

What a safer design should consider
As a design analysis, rather than a result tested in the post, these are useful questions when evaluating safeguards for financial data:
- Formatting: Does validation account for the app’s locale and distinguish thousands separators from decimal marks?
- Independent evidence: Are repeated reads genuinely independent, or do they reuse the same image conditions and OCR behavior?
- Legitimate edge values: Can valid values such as zero pass, and are bounds specific to the account and task?
- Disagreement handling: Does the system stop safely rather than choosing a value when readings conflict?
- Scope: Are names and other text fields verified separately from numeric values?
Chukwudubem’s approach makes a useful distinction between a plausible number and a confirmed number: format and range checks can catch some errors, while repeated reads can expose inconsistency. But none of those checks alone establishes ground truth. For consequential financial information, unresolved uncertainty should stop the workflow and require human confirmation rather than being treated as a successful read.
