Bank APIs can expose account data and important banking functions when identity checks, permissions, integrations, or operational safeguards fail. That does not establish that banks are “far more vulnerable” than people think: the available sources identify ways APIs can fail, but do not measure how often bank APIs are vulnerable or what the public expects. The practical takeaway is that API risk depends on how each connection is designed, authorized, monitored, and maintained.

Why banks use APIs—and what they expose

An application programming interface (API) lets software request data or ask another system to perform a function. In banking, APIs can connect customer-facing apps, internal systems, and outside financial-service providers. They may carry customer-permissioned data or enable operations, so a weakness can affect confidentiality, data integrity, or service availability.

The Basel Committee’s 2019 report describes API adoption as increasing data sharing and connectivity among financial-service providers. Its examples of potential problems include data breaches, misuse or falsification of data, denial of service, unencrypted logins, infrastructure malfunction, man-in-the-middle attacks, compromised tokens, and IP address spoofing. These are risks the report identifies, not evidence that every bank experiences them: Basel Committee, Report on open banking and application programming interfaces (2019).

How an API weakness can become a banking risk

OWASP’s 2023 API Security Top 10 is a consensus-based awareness taxonomy for API risks across sectors, not a bank-specific ranking or prevalence study. Its categories help explain the kinds of failures that could matter when an API serves a banking function or handles financial data.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Identity and authorization failures

  • Broken object-level authorization: A caller may be able to access another person’s account or transaction by changing an identifier if the API does not verify permission for that specific object. OWASP advises checking authorization in every function that accesses a data source using an ID supplied by the user.
  • Broken authentication: A flaw in identifying a user or client can enable token compromise or let an attacker temporarily or permanently act as another user.
  • Broken object-property authorization: The API may expose or accept fields that a caller should not be able to read or change—for example, returning sensitive account details or allowing an unauthorized change.
  • Broken function-level authorization: A caller may reach an operation they are not entitled to use, such as a privileged administrative function.

These problems are related but distinct: authenticating a person does not by itself establish that they may access a particular account, field, or operation. OWASP’s taxonomy explains these and other categories in its 2023 API Security Top 10.

Abuse, overload, and unsafe integrations

  • Unrestricted resource consumption: Excessive requests can strain computing capacity or trigger costs for paid services.
  • Abuse of sensitive business flows: Automated activity can exploit a legitimate function at harmful scale, even when the function itself behaves as designed.
  • Server-side request forgery (SSRF): If an API fetches a remote resource based on a user-supplied address without adequate validation, it may be induced to make an unsafe request.
  • Unsafe consumption of third-party APIs: An organization can take on risk by trusting external API data or behavior without suitable safeguards.

Configuration and inventory gaps

Security misconfiguration can leave an API exposed through insecure settings. Poor inventory management can leave undocumented, forgotten, or deprecated endpoints outside normal oversight. An organization cannot reliably secure or retire an interface it has not identified.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about prevalence

There is no bank API vulnerability rate established by the sources cited here. OWASP says its public call for data “did not result in data that would have enabled a relevant statistical analysis of the most common API security issues.” Its 2023 Top 10 therefore reflects expert consensus about important risks, not a statistical count of flaws in banks or a comparison with other industries. See the OWASP API Security Project and its 2023 methodology and data.

That distinction matters: a list of plausible failure modes helps organizations reason about controls, but cannot tell a customer whether a particular bank is vulnerable, how frequently a weakness occurs, or whether risk is higher than the customer expects. The Basel report supplies financial-sector context, but it was published in 2019 and does not establish the present-day security posture of individual banks.

How banks can reduce API risk

The Basel Committee’s 2019 report describes examples of controls used by some banks. They are risk-management approaches, not proof that an API is secure or a universal checklist that every bank follows.

Prevent unauthorized access and exposure

  • Restrict access privileges so users and systems receive only the access they need.
  • Use authentication and authorized end-to-end encryption to protect identity and data in transit.
  • Apply token expiration so a compromised or stale token does not remain useful indefinitely.
  • Use IP allowlisting and firewalls where appropriate as additional boundaries, not as substitutes for authorization checks.

Find weaknesses and maintain accountability

  • Test APIs for vulnerabilities and retest as interfaces change.
  • Keep audit trails that can help establish what happened and which systems or accounts were involved.
  • Monitor API-related cyber incidents so suspicious activity can be investigated and addressed.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of active, deprecated, and undocumented endpoints.

These controls map to different jobs: authentication, encryption, and access privileges help prevent exposure; testing and inventory maintenance help find and reduce weaknesses; audit trails and monitoring support detection and accountability. No single control can replace the others, and the presence of controls does not prove the absence of vulnerabilities.

What customers can reasonably do

Customers generally cannot inspect a bank’s internal API design, and the cited sources do not offer a method for determining whether a particular bank’s APIs are secure. Sensible steps are therefore focused on account protection and informed use of connected services:
