Could bamboo replace willow in cricket bats? Laminated bamboo has shown promising mechanical properties in a peer-reviewed study, and researchers have built full-size prototypes. But that does not establish better match performance, a lighter or easier-to-use bat, or a current price below £50. The legal position also needs care: MCC said in May 2021 that its Laws did not permit bamboo blades, and players should check the current Laws and competition rules before using one.
What the evidence says about bamboo versus willow
A 2021 peer-reviewed study by Ben Tinkler-Davies, Michael H. Ramage and Darshil U. Shah compared laminated bamboo with the willow used in the researchers’ tests. Bamboo scored higher on several measured mechanical indicators, but those findings are not the same as proving that a bamboo bat will help every player score more runs.

Those distinctions matter because a bat is a complete piece of sporting equipment, not just a material sample. Density, blade shape, balance and a player’s technique all affect how it handles. The researchers identified shape optimisation as necessary to address the weight challenge; the evidence does not show that the challenge has been solved for every bat design. What prototype testing has shown
The first full-size prototype
The 2021 research team worked with Garrard & Flack to make a full-size laminated bamboo prototype. This demonstrated that a full-size bat could be fabricated; it was not a controlled trial showing superior match results.

Later development and player feedback
A later project produced four blade prototypes and 16 bats, according to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI reports that players found them nearly indistinguishable from willow in look and feel, while also noting that a different weight could take some adjustment. That is qualitative feedback from prototype testing, not a controlled performance result or proof of broad player acceptance. UKRI’s project report describes the prototype work.
Are bamboo cricket bats legal?
MCC’s statement of 10 May 2021 said Law 5.3.2 required a bat blade to consist solely of wood: “The blade shall consist solely of wood”. MCC described bamboo as a grass and said a specific change to the Law would be needed to allow it. The statement also noted a restriction on laminating bat blades, with an exception for junior bats. That statement is dated; it does not by itself confirm the rule’s status in 2026. MCC’s Laws appendices page says bats conforming to the Laws must meet Law 5.7 specifications, but the material available here does not establish whether an amendment has changed the bamboo position since 2021. Before using a bamboo bat in a match, consult the current MCC Laws and check the rules of the relevant competition. Do not assume that a prototype’s existence makes it match-legal.
Are bamboo bats cheaper, and can you buy one?
Affordable bats are a development goal, not a confirmed consumer offer. UKRI reports that the project aims to produce bamboo bats priced under £50; that figure is a target, not a verified retail price or guarantee. The report does not confirm a launch, current stock, or a purchase route.

UKRI also gives context for the sustainability motivation: English willow used for bats has a maturation time of about 15 years, according to its report. That project-reported figure helps explain interest in alternatives, but it does not by itself demonstrate that bamboo bats are cheaper or have a lower overall environmental impact.
The reported prototypes and manufacturing collaborations show development activity, not a product that readers can be assumed to buy. No current availability, manufacturer terms, or consumer price is established in the cited project reporting. St John’s College, University of Cambridge, also reports on the project.

What to consider before choosing a bat
- Match rules: Confirm that the bat complies with current Laws and the specific competition’s regulations.
- Pickup and balance: If evaluating a prototype, handle it and test the shots you actually play; material stiffness alone does not tell you how it will feel.
- Price and availability: Treat the under-£50 figure as a project aim unless a seller confirms a current price and the exact product is available.
- Evidence: Separate measured material properties and modelled sweet-spot coverage from controlled match results, which the cited evidence does not establish.
