Larian’s September 2023 feature named Rogue/Ranger as Baldur’s Gate 3’s most popular multiclass combination at that time, with Barbarian/Fighter second. It then spotlighted five less-traveled pairings: Paladin/Warlock, Rogue/Monk, Storm Cleric/Storm Sorcerer, Druid/Barbarian, and Sorcerer/Warlock. These are developer suggestions and explanations of class interactions—not a current popularity survey or a controlled performance comparison.

What did Larian call the most popular multiclass builds?

In a feature published on 27 September 2023, Larian Product Manager Emily Gera reported that Rogue/Ranger was the most popular multiclass combination “at that point,” followed by Barbarian/Fighter. The feature did not give level splits or a comparable breakdown for either pairing, so it establishes the historical ranking, not how to build or optimize those characters.

The same feature described Baldur’s Gate 3 as having 12 classes and 46 subclasses when it was published. That is a dated 2023 count, not a current total: Patch 8, announced on 15 April 2025 as the game’s last major patch, added 12 subclasses—one for each class. Larian’s announcement lists Path of the Giants (Barbarian), College of Glamour (Bard), Death Domain (Cleric), Circle of the Stars (Druid), Arcane Archer (Fighter), Way of the Drunken Master (Monk), Oath of the Crown (Paladin), Swarmkeeper (Ranger), Swashbuckler (Rogue), Shadow Magic (Sorcerer), Hexblade (Warlock), and Bladesinger (Wizard). Larian’s 2023 developer feature is therefore a useful snapshot of its recommendations, not a complete guide to today’s options.

Which five less-traveled combinations did the developers feature?

The pairings below are organized by the play pattern Larian described. Their strengths depend on level choices, actions and bonus actions available in a round, spells, and—in some cases—specific equipment.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

Paladin/Warlock: repeated weapon attacks with Divine Smite

Larian’s example uses the Pact of the Blade Warlock. At Warlock level 5, Deepened Pact grants an additional weapon attack per round, which the feature says can combine with bonus attacks. The appeal is bringing repeated weapon attacks together with a Paladin’s Divine Smite. The source presents the interaction as a build idea; it does not specify a level split or quantify damage.

Rogue/Monk: spend bonus actions on unarmed attacks

The Thief Rogue’s additional bonus action can support more unarmed attacks in the feature’s Rogue/Monk concept. Larian suggests adding two Fighter levels later for Action Surge and using the Tavern Brawler feat to further increase unarmed damage. Its illustration of up to 12 attacks in a round is a specific later-game example involving that Fighter investment, not a guaranteed total for every character or turn.

Storm Cleric/Storm Sorcerer: build around lightning

This pairing is aimed at lightning damage and area effects. Larian points to the Cleric’s Destructive Wrath and the Sorcerer’s Heart of the Storm, with Cleric armor proficiency offering defensive support. The feature recommends lightning-charge equipment and spells including Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning. A separate Xbox Wire developer guide by Lead Systems Designer Nick Pechenin also mentions the Storm Sorcerer/Storm Cleric synergy.

Druid/Barbarian: stay durable in Wild Shape

Larian describes combining Wild Shape with Rage to improve durability through damage resistance and saving-throw advantages. Rage prevents spellcasting, a constraint that matters less while the character is already in Wild Shape. The feature also suggests taking Ranger levels for a bear companion; it does not provide a level allocation for that extension.

Rank #3
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
  • Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
  • Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
  • Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.

Sorcerer/Warlock: use spell resources and actions flexibly

The feature’s “Sorlock” uses Quickened Spell to cast Warlock damage spells again and describes exchanging Sorcery Points and spell slots. Its later-game expansion adds Fighter for Action Surge and Thief Rogue for an extra bonus action. Larian names the Potent Robe, Quickspell Gloves, and Markoheshkir as supporting items, making those equipment dependencies part of the suggested setup rather than a universal requirement.

How should you choose among these combinations?

Combination Play pattern highlighted Important dependency or constraint
Paladin/Warlock Repeated weapon attacks paired with Divine Smite Feature cites Warlock level 5 for Deepened Pact; no full level split given
Rogue/Monk Unarmed attacks using the Thief’s extra bonus action Two Fighter levels are suggested for Action Surge; 12 attacks is a setup-specific illustration
Storm Cleric/Storm Sorcerer Lightning damage and area spells Feature recommends lightning-charge gear and particular lightning spells
Druid/Barbarian Greater durability while transformed Rage prevents spellcasting; less relevant while in Wild Shape
Sorcerer/Warlock Spell-resource exchanges and additional casting opportunities Late-game version adds Fighter and Thief Rogue; named items support the setup

These are different ways to spend a character’s resources, not a single ranking of build power. Pick based on whether you want weapon or unarmed attacks, lightning effects, sturdiness while transformed, or spell-and-action interactions. The 2023 feature does not establish that one pairing outperforms the others.

Can you experiment without locking in a character?

Larian’s launch-era Community Update #21 says players can choose another class while leveling, that ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing were removed, and that respec is available through an NPC encountered early in Act 1. The studio framed multiclassing as useful both for roleplay and practical experimentation. Read Community Update #21 for that rules context.

That flexibility makes it practical to try a character concept and revise class choices if its turn-by-turn play does not suit you. It does not turn Larian’s 2023 popularity statement into a current ranking: the feature only records what was popular at the time it appeared.

What the developer feature does—and does not—establish

Gera introduced the examples as inspiration for players’ own multiclass experiments: “Hier sind einige Inspirationen für eure eigenen Multiclass-Experimente, direkt von den Entwicklern von Larian Studios.” The article explains interactions and recommends ideas, but does not report controlled comparisons, full level-by-level builds, or a current player survey. Treat its rankings as historical and its combinations as starting points to explore.
