Balatro’s appeal comes from turning familiar poker hand rankings into a flexible score-building puzzle. You are not playing poker against opponents: you are trying to beat rising score targets, while Jokers and other modifiers turn each run into a different strategic problem.
How Balatro’s strategy works
Each round asks you to score enough chips to beat a required target, or blind. You choose a hand to play—or discard cards in search of a better option—and the game scores that hand using chips and multipliers. The target rises as you progress, so a hand that clears one blind may not be enough for the next.

The decisions operate at two levels. In the moment, you weigh which hand you can make with the cards available. Across the run, you decide how to shape a build so those hands work well with your Jokers and other modifiers. A hand that is not the strongest by ranking can still be the better play if it activates effects that support your build.

Jokers change what a good hand means
Jokers provide passive effects that interact with scoring and other cards. They make hand selection part of a broader build strategy: the useful question is not only “What is the strongest hand I can play?” but also “Which available hand fits the effects I have assembled?” Tarot, Planet and Spectral cards, Vouchers, and deck choices add further ways to modify a run. The official Balatro Steam listing describes these systems as tools for creating varied builds and synergies.

The Steam listing states that the game includes 150 Jokers and 15 decks; those are store-page feature counts and can change with updates. They help explain why runs can take different directions, but they do not imply that there is one fixed best build or strategy.
Why the poker theme makes the game approachable
In a March 7, 2024 interview with Rogueliker, Balatro creator and developer LocalThunk described the game as a “modern indie take on solitaire with a poker coat of paint.” He said familiar playing cards and hand rankings made an information-dense strategy game easier to approach. The game’s central task, he explained, is to score chips to beat an ever-rising required score.

That framing is an entry point, not a claim that Balatro simulates poker. LocalThunk said the game has few mechanical similarities to real poker beyond its hand rankings. He also cited Big Two, a Cantonese card-shedding game he played with friends, as an inspiration. Balatro’s challenge is about building a scoring engine against targets, rather than betting or outplaying human opponents.
How randomness creates a risk-management puzzle
Because card and modifier offers vary, you cannot count on finding every piece of a preferred combination. LocalThunk acknowledged the game’s substantial randomness and described its broader strategy as mitigating risk: build something powerful enough to win, but not so dependent on one outcome that it fails when circumstances change.

That uncertainty gives individual choices their weight. A discard can pursue a more useful hand, while a new modifier can shift which hands are worth pursuing. The strategic challenge is to make the strongest use of what appears, rather than assume the run will deliver a planned combination. Randomness matters, but the creator’s own account presents risk management—not luck alone—as part of the strategy.

Jokers helped give the game its range of possible builds. LocalThunk said an earlier version focused on upgrading playing cards but felt as if something was missing; adding Jokers as passive items opened up more directions for effects and artwork. He said their effects were balanced to encourage varied play.

Development also involved iteration. In a March 18, 2024 TouchArcade interview, LocalThunk called Steam demos “instrumental” and said community feedback helped shape Balatro into the strategy game it became. He noted that systems changed in response to mistakes and feedback. That offers context for how the design developed, without making community input a complete explanation for the game’s appeal.
