Bad Omen is now a deliberate effect in Minecraft Java and Bedrock 1.21 and later. You get it by consuming an Ominous Bottle, not simply by killing a raid captain. If you enter a village while affected, the effect changes to Raid Omen and starts a 30-second countdown. Drink a milk bucket during that countdown to cancel the raid. The same effect can instead opt you into an Ominous Trial at a Trial Chamber, so carrying an unopened bottle is the safest way to avoid either event.
What Bad Omen means in Minecraft 1.21+
Bad Omen is a status effect that gives you a choice about when to trigger difficult content. In current Java and Bedrock editions, it does not immediately start a raid when you walk into a village. Mojang’s Java 1.21 notes describe the change directly: “Bad Omen no longer triggers a Raid directly when entering a Village.”
The effect is inactive until you approach one of the places that can use it. At a village, it becomes Raid Omen and gives you a short cancellation window before a raid begins. Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner in a Trial Chamber, it becomes Trial Omen and opts you into an Ominous Trial instead. This makes the bottle an activation item rather than an unavoidable punishment.
How you get Bad Omen now
Consume an Ominous Bottle
The current activation step is consuming an Ominous Bottle. Hold the bottle in your hotbar, use the normal consume button for your edition, and wait for the drinking animation to finish. The effect is applied immediately after consumption.

There are five Ominous Bottle variants, one for each Bad Omen level. The bottle’s level determines the level of the effect you deliberately activate; the bottle is not merely cosmetic.
Where Ominous Bottles come from
- Raid captains defeated outside a raid: In the 1.21 system, the captain drops an Ominous Bottle instead of applying Bad Omen directly.
- Trial-chamber vaults: Ominous Bottles can also be found in vaults in Trial Chambers.
A captain defeated as part of an existing raid is not the same source as a captain defeated outside a raid. If you are trying to acquire the effect for a later event, the relevant drop is the bottle from a captain encountered outside a raid.

Each consumed Ominous Bottle applies Bad Omen for 1 hour 40 minutes, according to Mojang’s 2024 mechanics notes. The five bottle variants represent Bad Omen levels 1 through 5.

The timer is long enough that an accidental activation can follow you for a substantial part of a play session. You do not have to enter a village or Trial Chamber immediately, however. Keeping the bottle unopened avoids starting the timer and avoids carrying the effect altogether.
What happens when you enter a village
Entering a village while Bad Omen is active transforms the effect into Raid Omen. That transformation starts a 30-second countdown. If the countdown reaches zero, a raid starts at that village.
- Activate Bad Omen only when you are ready. Consume the chosen Ominous Bottle away from villages if you intend to control the timing.
- Approach the village. The effect changes to Raid Omen when you enter the village.
- Read the countdown. You have 30 seconds to decide whether to continue or cancel.
- For a deliberate raid, use the window to check your defenses. Move to the position from which you want to fight and make sure you are not starting by accident.
- For cancellation, drink milk before the countdown ends. Milk clears the active effect and prevents the raid from starting.
The important distinction is that Bad Omen is the portable effect, while Raid Omen is the village-triggered state. The village event is not instantaneous, so entering the village does not remove your opportunity to cancel it.

How to remove Bad Omen
Drink a milk bucket
Milk is the direct removal method. Put a milk bucket in your hotbar and use it as you would any consumable. Mojang’s release notes state: “Like any other effect, players can drink a Bucket of Milk to clear the Raid Omen, preventing the Raid from starting.” The same effect-clearing action is the practical way to remove Bad Omen before it has been converted at a village.
- Already carrying Bad Omen: Drink milk before entering a village if you want to remove the effect without creating Raid Omen.
- Already in the village countdown: Drink milk while Raid Omen is counting down. This is the documented prevention window.
- Countdown finished: The raid has started, so the countdown-cancellation procedure is no longer available. Milk is a prevention step, not a way to rewind a raid that has already begun.
Do not consume the bottle
If you have an Ominous Bottle but do not want Bad Omen, leave it unopened. The bottle is the activation step in 1.21 and later; simply carrying it does not apply the effect. Store it away from your active hotbar if you are worried about using it accidentally.
How to stop an accidental raid
Use this short decision path whenever you notice the effect:
- Still holding an unopened bottle: Do not consume it.
- Bad Omen is active and no village has been entered: Stay away from villages, or drink milk to clear the effect.
- Raid Omen is visible and the timer is running: Drink milk immediately to cancel the event.
- You want the raid to happen: Do not drink milk; use the countdown to move into your prepared position.
This sequence is safer than trying to outrun an event after entering a village. The reliable control points are the unopened bottle, the distance from villages, and the milk-drinking window.
How to start a raid intentionally
To trigger a raid on purpose, consume an Ominous Bottle away from the target village, then enter that village only after you are ready. Once Raid Omen appears, do not drink milk. The 30-second period is useful for a final check of your equipment, shelter and escape route before the raid begins.
Choose the bottle level deliberately. Since each of the five variants supplies a different Bad Omen level, using a higher-level bottle changes the level passed into the event. The available mechanics notes establish the five levels but do not specify a separate duration for each one; the stated Bad Omen duration remains 1 hour 40 minutes.

Bad Omen and Trial Chambers
A village is not the only place that can consume Bad Omen. Trial Chambers use it for an optional Ominous Event. Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner, Bad Omen transforms into Trial Omen.
Trial Omen lasts 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level. The resulting durations are:

The level in this table is the transformed Trial Omen level. The game’s transformation determines the level used for the Trial Omen timer; do not assume that a bottle’s label is itself a promise of a particular Trial Chamber duration without checking the resulting effect.
Ominous Trials are optional, more challenging versions of Trial Chamber encounters and provide unique rewards. That makes Bad Omen useful for players seeking the harder challenge, but dangerous for anyone who entered a Trial Chamber expecting an ordinary trial.
Raid versus Ominous Trial
Both events use the same deliberately activated effect, but their triggers and timing are different.

If your goal is a raid, stay away from Trial Chambers until you have dealt with Bad Omen. If your goal is an Ominous Trial, avoid villages during the same preparation period so the effect is not converted into Raid Omen first.

What changed from versions before 1.21
Before 1.21, defeating a raid captain directly granted Bad Omen. That older behavior is the source of many outdated guides and player expectations.
In current 1.21 Java and Bedrock, a raid captain defeated outside a raid drops an Ominous Bottle instead. You must consume the bottle to activate Bad Omen. This adds a deliberate choice between keeping the item, removing the effect with milk, starting a village raid, or using the effect for an Ominous Trial.

When reading an older tutorial, check whether it tells you that killing a captain immediately gives the effect. That instruction is not the current Java and Bedrock 1.21 procedure.

You found a bottle but want no event
Keep the bottle unopened. If you already consumed it, drink milk before visiting a village or Trial Chamber. Because the bottle is the activation step, there is no reason to carry the active effect while traveling between locations.
You accidentally entered a village
Watch for Raid Omen and its countdown. Use a milk bucket before the 30 seconds expire. This clears the effect and prevents the raid from starting. If you instead decide to proceed, stop trying to cancel and use the remaining time to get into your prepared position.
You want an Ominous Trial, not a raid
Consume the selected bottle away from villages, then go to the Trial Chamber. At the relevant non-ominous Trial Spawner, the effect becomes Trial Omen. Check the transformed level and its 15-minutes-per-level duration before beginning the harder optional event.

You expected a captain to give Bad Omen immediately
That expectation describes pre-1.21 behavior. In 1.21 and later, look for the Ominous Bottle dropped by a captain defeated outside a raid, then consume it when you choose to activate the effect.

Troubleshooting and timing mistakes
“I killed a captain, but I do not have Bad Omen.”
That is normal in the current system. The captain supplies an Ominous Bottle rather than applying the effect directly. Check your inventory for the bottle and consume it deliberately if you want Bad Omen.
“I entered a village and a raid did not start instantly.”
Bad Omen is first converted to Raid Omen. The 30-second countdown is the intended intermediate state. Use it either to drink milk or to make your final preparations for the raid.
“Milk did not let me keep the effect.”
Milk clears the active effect; it is not a pause button. If you drink it during the Raid Omen countdown, the raid is prevented. To trigger a raid later, you need another Ominous Bottle and must consume it again.
“I wanted a normal Trial, but it became ominous.”
Bad Omen can opt you into an Ominous Event at a non-ominous Trial Spawner. Clear the effect with milk before approaching the Trial Chamber when you want to avoid that optional harder version.
