If the mischievous-bird premise is what attracts you, start with Untitled Goose Game. Xbox Wire identifies it as the obvious comparison. It shares the pleasure of controlling a troublesome bird, but Bad Magpie is not presented as a one-to-one copy: Milktooth’s game adds a fallen-star story, magical-realist elements, nonlinear exploration, and object systems involving fire and physics.

Bad Magpie is still upcoming. Its Steam page says “Coming soon,” Milktooth’s website lists “COMING 2027,” and a Steam demo announced for October 8, 2026 covers part of one of the game’s three areas. The comparison below therefore separates what you can play now from what has been announced for the finished game.

The short answer: play Untitled Goose Game first

Untitled Goose Game is the clearest sourced recommendation for someone asking what to play if they like Bad Magpie’s style. Xbox Wire calls it the obvious comparison because both games put a mischievous bird at the center of an adventure. That is a useful starting point, but it describes a shared premise rather than identical mechanics, pacing, story, or tone.

Bad Magpie follows a one-winged magpie separated from its flock. The bird collects shiny trinkets in an attempt to win over a fallen star. Its advertised identity comes from combining that unusual story with a densely packed, nonlinear world, objects that can be manipulated in surprising ways, and puzzles intended to have more than one solution.

Choose the goose game when the specific appeal is “I want to play a troublesome bird and cause problems.” Choose Bad Magpie when you want that premise combined with a more mysterious emotional goal, environmental improvisation, and a world that expects you to experiment rather than follow one prescribed puzzle route.

What Bad Magpie is

A one-winged magpie searching for shiny things

Milktooth describes Bad Magpie as a narrative adventure starring a magpie with one wing and a missing flock. The bird gathers shiny trinkets for a fallen star. That objective gives the collecting familiar to bird-themed games a story purpose: each object is part of an attempt to earn the star’s favor, not merely a score item.

The fallen-star premise also sets expectations different from a straightforward prank game. The setup is playful, but it carries an element of loss and uncertainty. The available description does not establish how the story resolves, so the star and the missing flock should be treated as the game’s central mysteries rather than promises about a particular ending.

An adventure built around systems

The official Steam description emphasizes a densely packed nonlinear world. Instead of presenting every challenge as a single sequence, it encourages movement through spaces, observation of objects, and experimentation with the environment. Milktooth gives concrete examples: a megaphone can be used to break glass, while flint can start fires.

Those examples matter because they show the intended relationship between tools and obstacles. An item is not necessarily limited to the use suggested when you first find it. The surrounding environment may offer another interaction, another route, or another way to affect a puzzle.

Puzzles with deliberate alternatives

Milktooth states in the Steam listing: “Every puzzle has multiple solutions. Most of them are intentional.” The qualification is important. The game is designed to reward creative approaches, but that does not mean every physically possible interaction is guaranteed to work. Some outcomes are authored solutions; others may simply be consequences of the systems.

For players, the practical implication is to test ideas before searching for a walkthrough. If a barrier appears to require one specific object, look for other ways to alter the situation: changing what is burning, breaking a surface, moving an object, or approaching from a different direction. The available material does not provide a complete puzzle list, so no particular solution should be assumed beyond the examples Milktooth has published.

A story told mostly through play

The full game is advertised as telling its story without text, dialogue, or cutscenes. That makes the environment and the magpie’s actions the primary storytelling tools. A player should expect to infer relationships, objectives, and consequences from what happens during exploration rather than wait for conventional exposition.

The demo is a limited exception: Milktooth says it adds a few lines of text before and after gameplay to set the scene. Those lines frame the sample but do not change the broader claim about the finished game’s intended storytelling approach.

What is available now, and what is still planned?

As of October 16, 2026, the full game is not released. The Steam listing says “Coming soon,” while Milktooth’s website says “COMING 2027.” A demo was announced as available on Steam on October 8, 2026. It is a slice of one of three areas and includes meteorite shards to collect, so it should be treated as a preview rather than an early version of the complete campaign.

Item Current information How to interpret it
Full PC release Steam lists the game as “Coming soon.” No final launch date is established.
Developer timing Milktooth’s website says “COMING 2027.” A planned year, not a guaranteed date.
Steam demo Announced available October 8, 2026. Playable access to part of one area, not the full game.
Demo content One slice of three areas, with meteorite shards to collect. Useful for judging the interaction style, but not evidence of the complete scope.
Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Game Pass Xbox Wire reported planned 2027 availability. Announced platform plans; confirm them again near launch.

Release plans can change. The Steam status, the developer’s 2027 wording, and the Xbox Wire preview should therefore be read as the latest announced information in this coverage, not as a final release guarantee.

Which parts of the style are you trying to match?

“Games like Bad Magpie” can mean several different things. Separating those preferences prevents the closest premise from being mistaken for a complete mechanical match.

1. A mischievous animal protagonist

If the essential fantasy is being an animal that can disrupt ordinary spaces, Untitled Goose Game is the strongest named match. Xbox Wire’s comparison is based on that shared rude-bird adventure premise. This is the most defensible recommendation when the bird itself matters more than the exact puzzle systems.

2. Improvising with ordinary objects

Bad Magpie puts unusual emphasis on environmental interactions. The megaphone-and-glass and flint-and-fire examples show that tools can affect the world in physical, systemic ways. Xbox Wire characterizes this quality as giving the game a light immersive-sim feel; that is the preview writer’s description, not an official genre label.

If your priority is trying an action simply because the environment appears to allow it, judge the demo on that basis. A title can share the bird premise without offering the same object-driven freedom.

3. Nonlinear exploration and multiple solutions

The official description presents a world that is densely packed and nonlinear, with puzzles designed to accept multiple solutions. This favors players who enjoy forming hypotheses, revisiting an area with a different tool, and discovering that an obstacle does not have to be approached in one fixed order.

That design emphasis is different from merely having collectibles or optional routes. The advertised goal is not only to find more things; it is to discover different ways to make the environment respond.

4. A playful surface with a more mysterious story

The magpie’s antics are set against a fallen star and a missing flock. That combination gives Bad Magpie a more enigmatic emotional frame than the phrase “mischievous bird” alone suggests. The available material does not establish a complete tonal comparison with Untitled Goose Game, so treat the difference as a premise-level distinction: one game is explicitly built around a star, loss, and wordless environmental storytelling, while the cited comparison is based on the shared bird-adventure idea.

Bad Magpie and Untitled Goose Game: a careful comparison

The table keeps the comparison within what has actually been established. “Not stated” means the available evidence does not support a reliable claim, not that the feature is absent.

Comparison point Bad Magpie Untitled Goose Game Best use of the comparison
Player character A one-winged magpie separated from its flock. A troublesome goose; Xbox Wire uses it as the direct conceptual comparison. Choose the goose game if the bird-protagonist fantasy is the deciding factor.
Central objective Collect shiny trinkets to win over a fallen star. Not stated in the cited material. Choose Bad Magpie for the star-centered mystery and collecting goal.
World structure Densely packed and nonlinear, according to the official Steam description. Not stated in the cited material. Use the demo to assess whether open-ended exploration appeals to you.
Object interaction Examples include using a megaphone to break glass and flint to start fires. Not established in the cited material. Do not assume that a shared bird premise means shared physics systems.
Puzzle design Every puzzle is advertised as having multiple solutions, with most alternatives intentional. Not stated in the cited material. Pick Bad Magpie if solution variety is more important than premise alone.
Story delivery Full story told through gameplay without text, dialogue, or cutscenes; the demo has a few framing lines. Not stated in the cited material. Compare how much you want the environment to carry the narrative.
Tone and setting Magical-realist elements, a fallen star, and a missing flock. Not stated in the cited material beyond the mischievous-bird adventure premise. Expect the games to overlap in setup while differing in narrative emphasis.
Availability Steam demo announced October 8, 2026; full game planned for 2027. Release status is not stated in the cited material. Only Bad Magpie’s demo status can be confirmed from this evidence.

How to use the demo to decide whether it is for you

The demo is the most direct way to test the qualities that distinguish Bad Magpie from a generic bird-themed adventure. It represents one slice of one of the three areas, so use it to evaluate the design approach rather than estimate the full game’s length or final variety.

  1. Open the Bad Magpie listing in Steam and select the available demo rather than treating the unreleased full game as playable.
  2. Play the opening framing text as context for the sample. Milktooth says the demo uses a few lines before and after gameplay to establish the scene.
  3. Look for more than one way to affect an obstacle. The published examples are a megaphone breaking glass and flint starting fires; the important test is whether experimenting feels rewarding.
  4. Notice whether you prefer discovering interactions to following explicit instructions. The advertised design expects observation and improvisation in a nonlinear space.
  5. Collect the meteorite shards included in the demo and ask whether that objective makes you want to inspect the surrounding area rather than move directly to an exit.
  6. Record what the demo does not answer: the full story, the remaining areas, the final number of puzzles, the launch date, and the final platform list are not established by this slice.

This approach avoids two common mistakes: rejecting the game because a short demo lacks the scope of a full release, or assuming that one successful interaction proves every later puzzle will behave the same way.

Who should wait for Bad Magpie, and who should play the closest alternative?

Play the demo now if you want to test experimentation

Try the demo if your main question is whether manipulating objects, testing physical consequences, and finding alternate solutions sounds enjoyable. Those are the features most clearly promised by the official description and the published examples.

Choose Untitled Goose Game if the bird fantasy is enough

If you mainly want the immediate comic premise of controlling a troublesome bird, the explicitly named comparison is the safer recommendation because it is already the recognized analogue in Xbox Wire’s preview. Do not buy it expecting the fallen-star narrative or the same fire-and-physics emphasis; those distinctions are part of what makes Bad Magpie its own project.

Wait if you need a confirmed full release

Anyone who wants a complete campaign, a fixed launch date, or a confirmed final platform should wait for more specific announcements. The current information establishes a 2027 plan and a demo, not a dated full release.

What has been announced about interest in the game?

Milktooth reported 50,000 wishlists in the first week after the June 2026 announcement and 70,000 wishlists in a September 3, 2026 update. These are developer-reported milestones, not independently audited figures. They indicate attention around the project, but they do not establish review quality, final sales, or how the finished game will perform.

Limits of the comparison

Only Untitled Goose Game is established here as a named analogue. The available evidence supports comparing design axes—mischievous-animal protagonist, object experimentation, exploration versus puzzle emphasis, comic versus mysterious framing, and present availability versus upcoming status—but it does not support presenting additional named games as direct matches.

Likewise, the article cannot confirm a final launch date, final platform availability, storefront pricing, a complete area count beyond the stated three-area structure, or the total number of puzzles. Those details should be checked against current announcements when the 2027 release window approaches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical verdict is therefore narrow but useful: start with Untitled Goose Game for the bird-led mischief, sample Bad Magpie for nonlinear object play and multiple-solution puzzles, and treat the full 2027 release as upcoming until Milktooth and the platform listings publish final details.
