If Bad Magpie Demo does nothing, closes immediately, reports a missing executable, or says “This game is currently unavailable,” work through Steam’s recovery sequence in order: restart Steam and Windows, check the published PC requirements, update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the demo files, then check antivirus quarantine and software conflicts. The demo’s Windows executable is BadMagpie.exe, so a missing or blocked copy is a particularly important clue.
What the Bad Magpie demo is
Bad Magpie Demo is a free, single-player Steam demo from Milktooth built with Unity. SteamDB identifies it as app 4813640 and lists Windows and macOS support. The SteamDB listing gives 8 October 2026 as the demo’s release date. On Windows, the launch file is named BadMagpie.exe.
This guide focuses on the Windows PC version. macOS has a separate build and startup environment, so Windows driver, DirectX and antivirus steps do not map directly to a Mac.
A launch failure does not by itself prove that the demo contains a game bug. Steam describes games that fail immediately as crashes caused by several possible factors, including damaged files, outdated drivers, blocked secondary installers and security software. No Bad Magpie-specific developer fix, known-issues list or startup patch note has been established, so use the observable symptom to choose the next check rather than assuming one universal cause.

Before changing anything, confirm the installed build
Check that Steam installed the demo, not only a shortcut
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Find Bad Magpie Demo and open its library page.
- Confirm that the game is installed on the Windows PC where you are pressing Play. If Steam shows an Install button, the launch files are not present yet.
- If the game is installed but the library page behaves oddly, exit Steam completely from Steam > Exit, not merely by closing the window.
A shortcut can remain after a moved, removed or partially downloaded library folder. Establishing the install state first prevents you from troubleshooting a file set that is not actually available.
Step-by-step fixes for a launch failure
1. Fully restart Steam and Windows
Steam’s own launch guidance begins with a fresh restart. Close the demo if it appears in Task Manager, exit Steam from its menu, restart Windows, open Steam again and try the demo once. Do not repeatedly click Play while Steam is still showing a previous “Preparing to Launch” attempt; that can leave several stalled processes to confuse the next test.
If the first post-restart attempt works, the failure was likely a transient Steam, Windows or process-state problem. If nothing changes, continue to the requirements check rather than repeatedly rebooting.

These are minimums, not a performance guarantee. Steam warns that a system at or below minimum can have launch or performance problems. A PC that falls below the CPU, GPU, VRAM, DirectX, operating-system or storage requirement should be treated as an eligibility problem first; changing unrelated settings will not make it meet the published baseline. The figures are the values on the 2026 Steam listing, not an independent benchmark or a promise of a particular frame rate.
3. Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates
Steam lists operating-system and device-driver updates among the first remedies for games that stop after “Preparing to Launch.”
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates and restart when Windows requests it.
- Update the driver for the GPU shown in
dxdiagor Device Manager. Use the driver channel supplied by the GPU manufacturer or your PC maker, and restart after installation. - Launch the demo again from Steam rather than from an old desktop shortcut.
If the issue started immediately after a driver change, record that timing. Do not install a random driver package or a DLL downloaded from an unofficial site; an incorrect driver can create a second problem and makes diagnosis harder.
4. Verify the demo’s files in Steam
A corrupt or incomplete download can prevent the executable from starting. Steam’s file-check command compares the local installation with the expected files and reacquires missing or damaged data.

- In the Steam Library, right-click Bad Magpie Demo and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- When Steam reports completion, restart Steam and test the demo once.
Do not interrupt the verification by deleting random files from the folder. If Steam downloads replacements, wait until the download queue is complete before launching. A successful verification means Steam repaired or confirmed its managed files; it does not prove that an external antivirus product will allow the executable to run.
5. Remove software conflicts and check security quarantine
Temporarily close non-essential background applications before testing again. This includes overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, recording software, RGB utilities, aggressive tuning tools and other programs that inject code into games. Keep the test controlled: close one group of non-essential tools, launch once, then restore them only after you know whether they were involved.
For a missing-executable error, inspect the antivirus or Windows Security history. Steam Support says this error is most commonly seen when antivirus software mistakenly identifies game files as malicious and quarantines them.
- Open your security product’s quarantine, protection history or blocked-items view.
- Look for an entry corresponding to the Bad Magpie installation and
BadMagpie.exe. - Confirm that the file is in the Steam library folder you installed, not an unrelated download directory.
- Restore or allow the file only when it is the genuine Steam-installed executable, then run Steam’s file verification again.
- If the security product blocks it again, leave the file quarantined and contact the security vendor or Steam Support rather than disabling protection permanently.
Never solve a missing-file message by downloading an isolated executable or DLL from a file-sharing site. That bypasses Steam’s integrity checks and can introduce malware.

6. Fix “This game is currently unavailable”
This message has a dedicated Steam sequence. First restart Steam, update Windows and the graphics driver, and verify the demo’s files. Then test whether the managed executable itself can start:
- In the Steam Library, right-click Bad Magpie Demo.
- Choose Manage > Browse local files to open the installation folder.
- Double-click
BadMagpie.exeonce. If Windows or your security software displays a warning, stop and verify the file’s location and signature before allowing anything. - If the direct launch produces a different error, record that exact message. It distinguishes a Steam handoff problem from a game-process, driver or security failure.
Steam also notes that required secondary installers may need to be run manually when another application blocked them. If the Bad Magpie folder contains a bundled prerequisite installer, run that installer from the Steam-managed folder and follow its prompts. Do not assume that every file in the folder is a prerequisite, and do not obtain a replacement installer from an unofficial mirror.
7. Escalate with a useful evidence package
If the sequence above does not change the result, stop repeating the same actions and collect evidence for Steam Support or the developer. Steam requests the exact message, an uncropped screenshot and a Steam system report for unresolved missing-executable cases.
- Exact symptom: write whether Play does nothing, the window closes, an executable is missing, or Steam reports that the game is unavailable.
- Full error text: copy the wording exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Uncropped screenshot: include the complete dialog and enough of the desktop to show which application generated it.
- Steam system report: use Steam’s system-information report option and attach the generated text as requested by support.
- Timeline: note whether the failure began after installation, a Windows update, a graphics-driver update or an antivirus alert.
- Actions already tried: list the restart, requirement check, updates, file verification, direct launch and security checks you completed.
This information lets support distinguish a damaged install from a blocked executable or a platform-level crash without asking you to repeat every basic step.

Symptom-specific decision branches
There is no response after clicking Play
Check that Steam is not still processing a download or update, then perform the full exit-and-restart procedure. If the library says the demo is installed, verify files and inspect antivirus history. A no-response symptom can be caused by a process that exits before drawing a window, so Task Manager may show a brief BadMagpie.exe process and then nothing. That observation is useful to include in a support report, but it is not proof of a particular bug.
The demo opens and closes immediately
Use the hardware table first, especially the operating-system, DirectX and GPU/VRAM entries. Then update the graphics driver, close overlays and verify files. If direct execution from the installation folder produces a Windows or security message that Steam does not show, preserve that message instead of repeatedly launching.
Steam says the executable is missing
Open Manage > Browse local files and check whether BadMagpie.exe is physically present. If it is absent, verify integrity and inspect quarantine. If it is present but will not start, check whether security software is blocking it and capture the resulting error. A missing file after verification points toward a continuing quarantine or a storage/permission problem that should be reported with the verification result.
Only the “currently unavailable” message appears
Follow the separate sequence in the previous section, including the direct executable test and secondary-installer check. Record whether the direct test starts the demo, shows a new error or produces no visible response; each outcome sends support down a different diagnostic path.
What the published requirements do—and do not—tell you
The listed baseline establishes compatibility targets, not a guaranteed fix. Meeting it does not rule out a damaged download, antivirus quarantine, a blocked prerequisite, an outdated driver or another Windows process conflict. Falling below it does not prove that a GPU replacement will solve the problem; the GTX 1050 Ti and RX 570 references are the published minimum class, not a diagnosis for every launch failure.
No independent performance test or launch-failure rate has been published with the available Bad Magpie information. Therefore, avoid treating a successful launch on one PC as evidence that every system with the same component will behave identically.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Launching an old shortcut: use the Steam Library so you test the installation Steam is managing.
- Verifying while Steam is still downloading: let all queued updates finish first.
- Disabling antivirus indefinitely: investigate quarantine and allow only the genuine Steam-installed file, if appropriate.
- Deleting the executable manually: let Verify integrity repair the installation.
- Adding unofficial DLLs: this can create security and compatibility problems unrelated to Bad Magpie.
- Changing many variables at once: perform one controlled test after each major action so you know what changed.
- Assuming minimum requirements equal smooth performance: the store values are a floor, not a frame-rate target.
