As of October 13, 2026, the free Bad Magpie demo is available on Steam for Windows and macOS. Milktooth also announced it for “Xbox on PC,” but the available official information does not confirm a demo for Xbox consoles. The developer has not published a reliable playtime estimate or said whether demo progress carries into the full game, so neither a specific duration nor save transfer should be assumed.
The demo is a short preview of a larger narrative adventure, not a promise that the full game’s content is all available to try. It introduces a corner of one of the game’s three areas and gives players a meteorite-shard objective. If you are choosing whether to download it, the clearest practical facts are its Steam availability, the distinction between Xbox on PC and an Xbox console, and the two unanswered questions about time and saves.
What platforms is the Bad Magpie demo on?
The demo is available through Steam, where the store page lists Windows and macOS system requirements and identifies the download as free. Steam gives the demo an October 8, 2026 release date and names Milktooth as both developer and publisher. Check the Bad Magpie Demo page on Steam for the current listing and the requirements for your operating system.

For a player deciding where to try it, the confirmed practical option is the Steam demo on a Windows or macOS computer that meets the listing’s requirements. The store page is the place to verify the requirements for your particular operating system; the available announcement details do not provide a substitute set of minimum or recommended specifications. Check that page before downloading if you are unsure whether your computer is supported.

What “Xbox on PC” means here
Milktooth’s announcement described the demo as coming to “Steam and XBOX on PC.” That wording supports an Xbox-on-PC announcement, not a claim that the demo runs on an Xbox console. The official game website links to Steam and Xbox wishlist pages for the full game, but those links do not establish console demo availability. If you want to play on a console, look for a specific console demo listing or confirmation from Milktooth rather than relying on the broad word “Xbox.”
These are two different platform questions: whether the demo is offered on a PC storefront or service associated with Xbox, and whether it can be downloaded and played on an Xbox console. The announcement supports the former wording, while the information available does not establish the latter. In practical terms, do not treat an Xbox wishlist link, or the phrase “Xbox on PC,” as proof that an Xbox-console version of the demo exists.
The official website says the full game is “COMING 2027.” That is an announced year, not a confirmed launch date. You can check the Bad Magpie official website for the game’s current announcements and wishlist destinations. The existence of Steam and Xbox wishlist links tells players where the full game can be followed; it does not replace a specific platform listing for the demo.
What is included in the demo?
The demo is a preview slice, not the complete game. Team Milktooth says it places players in a corner of one of the full game’s three areas and offers an introduction to the story behind the magpie’s quest for shiny trinkets. The demo’s stated objective is to find meteorite shards scattered around the map. The developer does not describe this slice as covering all three areas or the full adventure.

The Steam listing describes the wider game as a narrative adventure about a one-winged magpie, shiny objects, and a fallen star. It also presents exploration, environmental interactions, and puzzles with multiple solutions as elements of the full game. Those descriptions provide context for the demo, but they should not be read as a guarantee that every mechanic or area is available in the demo.
The distinction matters when setting expectations. The demo gives a look at a limited part of the world and an objective to pursue there; it is not described as a tour through all three areas. Likewise, features in the Steam description explain the broader game, not necessarily everything that can be tested in this preview. If you are trying the demo to decide whether the full adventure appeals to you, use it as a sample of the premise and presentation rather than as a checklist of every promised game feature.
How the demo handles the story
There is a small presentation difference between the demo and the planned full game. Team Milktooth says the full version tells its story entirely through gameplay; for the demo, the developer added a few lines of text before and after gameplay to set the scene. That text is part of the demo’s introduction and ending, not evidence that the full game will use the same format.

In its Steam Community announcement, Team Milktooth described the demo as dropping players into “a corner of one of the three areas” in the game’s “chaotic and colourful world,” with a first glimpse of the story behind the magpie’s “obsessive quest for shiny trinkets.” The wording gives a useful sense of scope: this is an opening glimpse of the setting and story, rather than a complete account of the magpie’s quest. The developer’s note about adding a few lines of text for the demo also means the preview’s story framing should not be used to predict exactly how the full game will present its narrative.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?
Milktooth has not stated in the reviewed official sources whether the demo stores progress between play sessions, syncs saves through Steam Cloud, or transfers a save to the full game. The Steam demo listing and the developer’s Steam Community announcements do not provide a clear carryover policy. So the accurate answer is not confirmed: do not count on demo progress transferring, but do not assume it cannot transfer either.
There are two separate save questions here. First, will the demo remember what you did if you close it and return later? Second, if the full game launches, will it import or continue from a demo save? A yes to the first would not imply a yes to the second. At present, the official information does not answer either question, and it does not state whether Steam Cloud sync is available for the demo.
What to check before you start
- Read the current Steam demo listing and Milktooth’s announcements for any save or Steam Cloud note added after the demo’s release.
- If carrying progress matters to you, ask the developer directly through an official channel before investing time on the assumption that a save will transfer. Milktooth’s Steam Community page is the official announcement hub.
- Until a policy is published, treat the demo as a separate preview. Avoid deleting or moving local save files based on guesses about where the game stores them or whether they will be used by the full game.
A save that persists when you close and reopen the demo would answer only whether progress survives between sessions; it would not prove that the full game will import that save. Those are separate questions, and the developer has not answered either one in the reviewed sources.

Play it for the slice it offers, but do not plan your future full-game progress around a transfer feature that Milktooth has not announced. If the developer publishes a policy later, check whether it describes local save persistence, cloud syncing, full-game transfer, or some combination; those terms describe different behaviors.

How long is the Bad Magpie demo?
No official source reviewed gives a typical completion time, a range, or a separate estimate for a quick run versus collecting every shard. Milktooth identifies finding meteorite shards as the objective, but the objective alone does not establish how long a player will take. An exact number of minutes or hours would therefore be a guess, not a published estimate.
Your own time may depend on how much of the map you explore and how thoroughly you search for shards, but the developer has not quantified those differences. If you need to plan a play session, allow time according to your own pace rather than relying on an unofficial duration presented as a guaranteed completion time. Check the store page and Milktooth’s announcements for a later estimate if one becomes available.
It is reasonable to distinguish between reaching the stated objective and spending more time looking around, but the official descriptions do not label a timed “quick run,” provide a shard count, or say whether every shard is required for completion. There is therefore no supported basis for assigning a separate duration to a minimal run or a thorough one. The three-area figure describes the full game, while the demo covers a corner of one area; it does not provide a clock or a conversion from that scope to playtime.

If you are scheduling around the demo, think of the length as currently unknown rather than assuming it is either a fixed short session or a multi-hour commitment. The developer’s objective and map description indicate what players will be doing, but only a later official estimate or your own playthrough can answer how long it takes you. A completion estimate from one player would reflect that player’s pace and approach, not a duration confirmed by Milktooth.
