Backup as a service (BaaS) is a cloud-based operating model in which a provider manages backup software, storage, and recovery operations for an organization. The organization still chooses what to protect, sets requirements such as schedules and retention, controls access, and checks that its data can be restored.
What backup as a service means
With BaaS, an organization consumes backup and recovery as a managed service instead of operating all the backup infrastructure itself. Depending on the offering, the provider may manage scheduling, storage, monitoring, and restore operations. The customer decides how much management to delegate and remains accountable for its data protection requirements. IBM’s BaaS overview describes the model and the continuing role of customer-set policies.
BaaS is an operating model, not a promise that every task or workload is covered. Service scope depends on the provider, workload, configuration, and contract.
What a BaaS offering can include
Managed backup services commonly provide centralized policy-based scheduling, backup storage, retention controls, monitoring, and ways to restore data. Those capabilities are not uniform. For example, AWS Backup centralizes backup management across supported AWS services and some hybrid workloads, including VMware. Azure Backup documents protection for Azure and on-premises workloads without requiring customers to deploy backup infrastructure. Google Cloud Backup and DR describes support for Google Cloud and hybrid environments.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
These examples illustrate different services; they are not interchangeable, and their documented coverage should not be assumed to apply to every BaaS provider. Check that the exact applications, platforms, and data sources an organization uses are supported.
What the provider manages—and what the customer still owns
Delegating backup operations does not transfer all responsibility for data protection. The customer needs to define the resources to protect, configure or approve schedules and retention, manage identities and access, meet applicable governance obligations, and establish how recovery will be tested.

AWS’s AWS Backup security guidance says customers configure backup plans and assignments, manage credentials, regularly test finding recovery points and restoring them, and include backup procedures in continuity plans. Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance says customers retain responsibility for their data, accounts, and access management. The precise division varies by service, workload, and contract; do not assume the provider handles everything.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow BaaS differs from disaster recovery
Backup preserves data in recovery points so it can be restored. Disaster recovery (DR) is broader: it concerns bringing workloads and services back online, which may require failover orchestration and a recovery environment. A backup service can support a DR plan, but backup alone does not guarantee that applications will resume operation within a particular time.

Microsoft distinguishes Azure Backup’s data-protection role—backup and restore—from Azure Site Recovery, which supports disaster recovery and failover orchestration in its Azure Backup overview. An organization that needs service-level recovery should confirm the DR capabilities and recovery objectives of its overall design rather than infer them from a backup feature list.
How to evaluate a BaaS service
Compare the service against the organization’s workloads and recovery needs, then confirm claims in current documentation and contract terms. Useful questions include:

- Coverage: Does it protect the required cloud, on-premises, and SaaS workloads, including the specific applications and data sources in use?
- Policies and retention: Can schedules, retention periods, and long-term archive needs be set and managed as required?
- Recovery: What restore granularity and documented recovery objectives are available, and can the organization run realistic restore tests?
- Resilience: What protections exist against accidental deletion or tampering? Check for immutable storage options and separation of administrative access.
- Security and oversight: Review identity and access controls, encryption choices, monitoring, and audit reporting.
- Governance and responsibility: Confirm data location, regulatory and contractual fit, and which duties remain with the customer.
Provider documentation can clarify particular features, not establish a universal BaaS standard. AWS documents centralized plans, vault protections, and compliance reporting in its service overview and FAQ; Azure describes workload coverage and backup tiers in its overview; Google Cloud describes isolated vaults, retention, immutability, and monitoring in its Backup and DR documentation. Verify current workload support, geographic availability, retention behavior, and terms for the particular service being considered.

Not necessarily. “Cloud backup” can describe where backup data is stored or a backup product delivered through cloud infrastructure. BaaS emphasizes that a provider manages some or much of the backup operation as a service. Because providers use these terms differently, evaluate the actual responsibilities and capabilities rather than relying on the label.
