Backstage 1.55.0 is a breaking-change release for Catalog integrations and a reliability release for the Scaffolder. It removes the Catalog relations compatibility layer, legacy processor exports, and the deprecated stitching configuration. It also introduces the scaffolder.taskRecovery configuration section, which can resume crashed or timed-out tasks from their last completed step. Recovery is off by default, requires a separately installed workspace provider, and changes how long task secrets and step outputs are retained.
What changes in Backstage 1.55
- Catalog integrations must use relation objects with
targetRef; the old compatibility fieldtargetis no longer supplied. - The deprecated
CodeOwnersProcessorandAnnotateScmSlugEntityProcessorexports have been removed from the core packages. - The deprecated
catalog.stitchingStrategy.modesetting has been removed. - Scaffolder tasks can be recovered automatically after crashes and timeouts through
scaffolder.taskRecovery. - Workspace serialization for recovery now depends on an installed and registered workspace provider.
- Worker failure handling is more resilient, including backoff for repeated database-claim failures and retries for transient task-pickup errors.
Catalog API removals you must handle
Relations now use targetRef
Backstage 1.55 removes catalog.enableRelationsCompatibility and its compatibility layer. Catalog relations are returned in the standard format, with the related entity identified by targetRef. Integrations that read the former target property must be updated before or during the upgrade; otherwise relation lookups, policy checks, or custom API responses can fail after the new backend is deployed.
Move the code-owner processor
The deprecated CodeOwnersProcessor export is no longer available from the previous package location. Install and register the community module @backstage-community/plugin-catalog-backend-module-codeowners, then update your backend wiring to use its processor.
Move the SCM-slug processor
The deprecated AnnotateScmSlugEntityProcessor export was also removed. Replace it with @backstage-community/plugin-catalog-backend-module-annotate-scm-slug and register that module in the Catalog backend.

Remove the stitching compatibility setting
catalog.stitchingStrategy.mode is no longer a supported configuration key. Delete it from deployment configuration and remove code that expects the old compatibility behavior.

How Scaffolder task recovery works
The new scaffolder.taskRecovery section enables automatic recovery for tasks that crash or time out. A recovered task resumes after its last completed step instead of starting from the beginning. Backstage retains the task’s secrets until it reaches a terminal state and persists outputs from completed steps so the resumed execution has the context it needs.

Recovery is disabled unless you configure it. When it is disabled, secrets are cleared as soon as a task is claimed, and a retry reruns every step. Enabling recovery applies to all Scaffolder tasks, not just selected templates.

Prerequisites for enabling recovery
Install a workspace provider
Recovery’s workspace serialization is not supplied automatically by the core configuration. You must install and register a provider. Backstage documents @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend-module-workspace-database for development use. That provider has a 50 MB limit and is not recommended for production.

For production, use an external provider such as @backstage/plugin-scaffolder-backend-module-gcp or another provider appropriate for your storage and durability requirements. The Scaffolder rejects a provider that is named in configuration but has not been installed and registered.
Understand the first-start migration
When the database workspace provider starts for the first time, it migrates existing database workspace snapshots from the legacy task storage. Plan for that migration during a controlled deployment and verify that the provider can access the database and its workspace records.

Update action behavior
Because recovery is global, actions must be idempotent or checkpointed. An idempotent action can run again without creating duplicate resources or corrupting state. A checkpointed action records enough progress that a resumed task can safely continue. Pay particular attention to actions that create repositories, open pull requests, provision infrastructure, send notifications, or perform other external side effects.

What happens to the experimental recovery flags
Backstage 1.55 consolidates EXPERIMENTAL_recoverTasks, EXPERIMENTAL_workspaceSerialization, and EXPERIMENTAL_recoverTasksTimeout into the new scaffolder.taskRecovery configuration area. The older flags remain supported as fallbacks, so an upgrade does not require them to disappear immediately. Treat the new section as the forward-looking configuration, and remove experimental settings only after your deployment has been migrated and tested.

Other upgrade work
Move Sentry configuration
If a custom Sentry action sets apiBaseUrl at the action level, move that value to scaffolder.sentry.apiBaseUrl before upgrading. Leaving the value in the old location can prevent the action from using the intended Sentry endpoint.
Test the complete recovery path
- Install the selected workspace provider in the backend package.
- Register the provider in the Scaffolder backend before enabling recovery.
- Configure
scaffolder.taskRecovery; remember that recovery remains off unless explicitly configured. - Run a representative task containing an external side effect and a later step that consumes its output.
- Force a controlled worker interruption or timeout, then confirm that the task resumes after the last completed step rather than repeating completed work.
- Check terminal-state cleanup to verify that retained secrets are released when the task finishes or fails permanently.
Worker reliability improvements
The 1.55 changelog also describes operational fixes independent of the new recovery setting. Repeated database claim failures now back off instead of hammering the database. Unexpected execution errors are contained, graceful shutdown stops new task claims, and a transient task-pickup error is retried rather than silently halting the worker.
These changes address a failure mode in which new tasks could remain queued with no visible error or failing health check until an operator restarted the worker. They reduce that risk, but teams should still monitor queue age, worker health, and failed claims during rollout.

Backstage 1.55 upgrade checklist
- Search Catalog integrations and custom code for reads of the removed
targetrelation field; replace them withtargetRef. - Install and register the community code-owner and SCM-slug modules if your Catalog uses those processors.
- Delete
catalog.enableRelationsCompatibilityandcatalog.stitchingStrategy.mode. - Choose a workspace provider that matches the environment: the database provider is limited to 50 MB and intended for development, while production should use external storage.
- Move custom Sentry action endpoints to
scaffolder.sentry.apiBaseUrl. - Decide whether to enable recovery; if you do, audit every action for idempotency or checkpoints.
- Retain the experimental flags only as temporary fallbacks while migrating to
scaffolder.taskRecovery. - Exercise crash, timeout, shutdown, and transient pickup scenarios before declaring the upgrade complete.
Backstage 1.55 therefore combines a deliberate Catalog cleanup with a configurable recovery model: update removed APIs first, provide durable workspace storage, and enable recovery only after Scaffolder actions can safely resume.
