What platforms is Backrooms: Impending Doom on?
The current official listing is for Windows PC on Steam. The minimum operating-system requirement is Windows 10 64-bit; the recommended operating-system entry says Windows 10/11. The inspected official pages do not identify a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, macOS or Linux release.
That is a statement about the currently published information, not a permanent promise that other versions will never appear. If you are waiting for a console edition, there is no announced platform or date to rely on at present. The free Prologue is also presented as a PC download through the Steam listing.

Steam currently shows 20 January 2027 as the planned release date. The same page says the game is not yet available for purchase and is coming to Early Access. “Planned” matters: it is a schedule published by the developer, not a guaranteed launch date. A previous Steam search-result variant displayed December 2026, but the current product page’s specific January date is the one to use.
#1 Best Overall
The developers say they expect Early Access to last around 12 months, while warning that the timeline may change. That estimate does not establish a fixed date for the 1.0 version. Content, systems and the release schedule can be revised while the game is in development.
What Early Access means here
The Early Access plan is intended to let players experience the project while it is still being expanded. The developers say the full version is planned to add content, events, systems, locations, threats, mechanics and additional polish. Those are development plans rather than a guaranteed feature list, so buy or follow the game with the expectation that it can change substantially.
In the Steam Early Access Q&A, the developers explain their reason for launching this way: “We are bringing the game to Early Access because this kind of horror grows stronger in the dark, with real players inside it.” This is the developers’ own description of their approach, not an independent evaluation of the finished game.

Does Backrooms: Impending Doom have multiplayer?
Multiplayer has not been confirmed. Steam’s explicit feature listing says Single-player and does not list online co-op, local co-op or another multiplayer mode. You should therefore plan on a solo game if you download the Prologue or follow the upcoming Early Access release.
The developer’s itch.io page includes a “Multiplayer” tag, but a tag is weaker evidence than the Steam feature list and does not establish that co-op is implemented, playable or scheduled. Until the developers publish a clear mode description, player count or co-op instructions, do not assume that friends can join your session.
Is there a free demo?
Yes. Steam lists a free Prologue. It is designed to cover the opening, introduce the core mechanics and take the player through the first encounter with the game’s mystery. This gives you a way to check the atmosphere and your PC’s behavior before the Early Access launch.

The store page says Episode 1 and Episode 2 will come later and will replace the demo on that page. That wording means the Prologue is an introductory slice rather than a promise that the entire first two episodes are currently playable. Availability and the page’s contents may change as development proceeds.

- How well the available language and subtitle options work for your preferred setup.
What kind of game is it?
Backrooms: Impending Doom is a first-person psychological-horror game built around a failed research expedition into Level 0 of the Backrooms. The premise uses environmental uncertainty and isolation rather than presenting the game as a conventional action shooter.
The described play involves exploring spaces, following traces left by the expedition, examining terminals and records, and receiving information through radio communications. Stamina is one of the stated systems. The game also uses Synchronization, a mechanic named in the listing but not fully explained in the available store material; the Prologue is the practical way to see how it functions.

Sound is a significant part of the design. The description emphasizes disorientation and sustained tension, so headphones are an optional way to hear positional or atmospheric audio more clearly. A headset is not listed as a requirement, tested accessory or developer endorsement.
PC system requirements
The following are the specifications posted on the Steam product listing, accessed 13 October 2026. They are stated targets from the listing, not independent benchmark results. The minimum notes target 1080p at Low settings and 60 frames per second; the recommended notes target 1080p at Medium–High settings and 60–120 frames per second.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10/11 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 5 GB available | 5 GB available |
| Listing notes | 1080p, Low, 60 FPS target; SSD strongly recommended | 1080p, Medium–High, 60–120 FPS target; DLSS/DLAA require DirectX 12 and a compatible RTX GPU |
How to compare your PC with the listing
- Open Windows Settings and check System > About for your processor and installed RAM.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, or your graphics driver utility, to identify the GPU.
- Confirm that your Windows installation is 64-bit and that DirectX 12 is available by running
dxdiag. - Keep at least 5 GB free for the listed installation requirement, while leaving additional space for updates and temporary files.
- If your hardware is near the minimum, install the Prologue on an SSD and begin with Low settings at 1080p. The published 60 FPS figure is a target, not a guarantee for every system.
A graphics card that falls below the minimum may still launch the game, but the listing provides no performance target for that situation. Conversely, meeting the recommended parts does not guarantee 120 FPS: actual results depend on resolution, drivers, background applications and later changes to the Early Access build.
Best Value

Languages and audio options
Steam lists 13 supported languages. English and Russian are listed with full audio and subtitles. French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Danish, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Azerbaijani are listed for the interface and subtitles.
The language listing describes store-supported categories; it does not mean every language has voice acting. If spoken dialogue is important to you, English and Russian are the two options identified with full audio. Subtitle and interface support are listed separately for the other languages.
Should you play the Prologue or wait for Early Access?
The Prologue makes sense if you want to
- Try the game without paying for the forthcoming release.
- Evaluate the atmosphere, sound design and first-person movement for yourself.
- Check whether your PC is comfortable with the stated 1080p target.
- See the opening mechanics before deciding whether to follow development.
Waiting is more sensible if you need
- A finished campaign rather than a work in progress.
- A confirmed co-op mode or any multiplayer feature.
- A firm 1.0 date instead of an estimated Early Access period.
- A console version, because none is currently identified on the inspected official pages.
The free Prologue reduces the risk of trying the game, but it cannot answer questions about content planned for later episodes or the eventual full release. Those additions remain subject to the developers’ Early Access schedule.

Bottom line for prospective players
As of the 13 October 2026 Steam listing, Backrooms: Impending Doom is a forthcoming Windows PC horror game with a free Prologue, a planned 20 January 2027 Early Access launch and an estimated year-long Early Access period. Treat it as a solo experience: multiplayer is not confirmed despite a Multiplayer tag on the developer’s itch.io page. The Prologue is the best current way to sample the game and verify your PC before deciding whether to follow the evolving Early Access release.
