To remove background noise, first record in the quietest practical space, then choose cleanup based on the noise: use profile-based noise reduction for steady hiss, hum, or fan noise; use a noise gate to quiet pauses; and consider speech enhancement for voice. Apply cleanup before equalization or leveling, use conservative settings, and listen for artifacts. No process can guarantee perfect removal.
Start with the recording, not the effects
Preventing noise is usually more effective than trying to remove it later. Record in a quiet setting, use the best microphone available to you, and check your equipment settings before you begin. A better microphone can help capture a cleaner recording, but it cannot repair audio that has already been recorded.
Listen to a short test recording before a full session. Check for steady fan or room noise, electrical hum, and intermittent sounds such as clicks or voices. Identifying the problem helps you choose a tool that addresses it without unnecessarily changing the wanted audio.
Choose the right cleanup for the noise
| Problem | Best starting point | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Steady hiss, hum, or fan noise | Profile-based noise reduction | It may struggle with loud or changing noise, or noise that overlaps the wanted audio’s frequencies. |
| Background sound during pauses | A noise gate | It does not remove a continuous noise bed while speech is above the gate’s threshold. |
| Voice recording needing speech-focused cleanup | Speech enhancement | It is not guaranteed to remove every unwanted sound or artifact. |
| Electrical hum or a high-pitched whistle | Consider a notch filter before noise reduction | It targets a tonal sound, not every kind of background noise. |
Audacity describes its profile-based Noise Reduction effect as intended for relatively steady sounds such as hiss, hum, and fan noise. Its Noise Reduction manual explains the process and cautions that stronger reduction can create watery or metallic artifacts. The Audacity noise reduction guidance also notes that results may be poor when noise is very loud or variable, the desired signal is not much louder, or noise shares frequencies with speech or music.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reduce steady noise with a noise profile
- Find a noise-only moment. Select a short portion that contains the unwanted steady sound but no speech or music. If wanted audio is included in the sample, the effect may classify it as noise.
- Capture the profile. In Audacity, open the Noise Reduction effect and choose the option to get a noise profile from the selection. The exact control wording can vary with the installed version.
- Select the audio to clean. Choose the relevant clip or recording, then reopen Noise Reduction and apply it.
- Start conservatively. Use the smallest amount that meaningfully reduces the noise rather than trying to make the recording silent.
- Audition the result. Listen to speech, music, and pauses. If voices sound metallic, watery, thin, or otherwise damaged, undo the effect or reduce its strength.
Noise reduction is not a universal repair tool. For a mains hum or high-pitched whistle, Audacity’s manual suggests considering a notch filter before applying noise reduction. If the noise changes unpredictably or overlaps heavily with the wanted sound, processing may not produce a satisfactory result.
Use a noise gate to quiet pauses
A noise gate attenuates audio that falls below a threshold. This can make gaps between spoken phrases quieter, but it will not remove room noise underneath speech that remains above the threshold. Set it mildly: an aggressive gate can make the recording sound unnatural by cutting off quiet syllables or making the background switch abruptly between loud and quiet.

Use a gate as a complement to noise reduction when pauses are the main concern, not as a substitute for reducing steady noise throughout a recording. Audacity’s Noise Gate manual describes its threshold-based behavior.

Try speech enhancement for voice recordings
For a voice-focused recording, speech enhancement may be worth comparing with conventional noise reduction. Adobe recommends testing short clips in both Enhance Speech v1 and v2 when you are unsure which is more suitable, then making further edits if needed. Compare the versions on the same excerpt and listen for unnatural changes to voice quality, not just a quieter background. Adobe’s Enhance Speech guide also advises recording in a quiet setting and checking equipment before recording.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

Enhancement is not a promise of a flawless result. Adobe states, “But no setup can completely remove unwanted artifacts or noises from your recordings.”
Clean up before equalizing or leveling
Apply noise cleanup early in the processing chain, before equalization or leveling. If a noise floor remains, later processing that raises the overall signal can raise that noise along with the wanted audio. Audacity’s noise removal and repair guidance recommends this order.

After cleanup, listen again at a realistic playback level. A technically quieter recording is not necessarily a better one if the processing has damaged the voice or music. Keep the version that preserves the wanted sound while reducing distractions.

When noise cannot be removed cleanly
Some recordings do not contain enough separation between wanted audio and noise for a cleanup tool to distinguish them well. Loud or variable noise, a weak voice relative to the background, and overlapping frequencies can all limit profile-based reduction. In those cases, stronger processing may make the recording less natural without solving the problem.

- If you can record again, reduce noise at the source by choosing a quieter place and checking the setup.
- If the noise is a steady tonal hum or whistle, try a notch filter before general reduction.
- If only pauses are distracting, try a mild gate rather than applying stronger reduction to the entire clip.
- If you cannot eliminate the noise without harming speech or music, favor a natural-sounding result over silence.
