To limit one source of iPhone background activity, turn off Background App Refresh at Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can also restrict it to Wi-Fi or allow Wi-Fi and cellular data. The effect on battery life depends on which apps refresh and how you use your phone; Apple’s guidance does not promise a particular saving.
What Background App Refresh does
When you leave an app, iOS may let it run briefly before suspending it. A suspended app is not actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. Background App Refresh lets suspended apps check for updates and new content, so information may be more current when you return.
Turning the setting off restricts that refresh behavior. It does not make apps unusable, nor does it stop every kind of background activity: apps may still perform specific background tasks or services.

| Choice | What it means | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Disables Background App Refresh. | Choose this if you prefer apps not to check for new content through this feature while suspended. |
| Wi-Fi | Allows refresh over Wi-Fi, not cellular data. | Choose this if you want background updates when connected to Wi-Fi but want to avoid using cellular data for this refresh. |
| Wi-Fi & Cellular Data | Allows refresh over either connection. | Choose this if you want apps to be able to check for content on both network types. |
Rather than switching everything off, you can keep refresh enabled for apps where timely content matters and disable it for others. The available sources do not quantify battery savings for any of these choices.
Check which apps are using battery in the background
Before changing settings—or if battery life does not improve afterward—look at Settings > Battery and review Battery Usage. Apple’s view includes app and system use and indicates on-screen or background activity. Background activity can include directions, music playback, photo syncing, or fetching mail; weak cellular coverage can also use more battery.

Use that information as a clue, not proof that Background App Refresh is the cause. Battery Usage can show that an app was active in the background, but it does not establish that this particular setting caused the drain.
Use Low Power Mode for broader power reductions
Low Power Mode reduces power use through several changes, one of which is turning off Background App Refresh. It also reduces or disables other features, so it is a broader trade-off than changing refresh alone.

Turning off Background App Refresh is a reasonable adjustment if you want fewer apps checking for new content while suspended. It is not a guaranteed fix for fast battery drain, and the available Apple guidance does not specify a percentage or amount of extra time you will gain. If Battery Usage points to a different cause—such as sustained background work or poor cellular coverage—changing this setting alone may not address it.
