If you already build backend applications, the most useful route into DevOps is to take one small service from your laptop to a cloud deployment, learning each layer as the project needs it. Start with Linux and networking, use Git and scripting to make work repeatable, package the service with Docker, then add a build-and-test pipeline and deploy it to one AWS environment. You do not need to master every cloud service—or learn Kubernetes—before your first deployment.

What changes when a backend developer learns DevOps?

You already know how to write application code. The next step is understanding the environment around that code: how it runs as a process, how it reaches dependent services, how it is packaged, how a change gets released, and how failures are observed.

A useful goal is not collecting tools. It is being able to explain and operate a small delivery path: code in Git, a Linux runtime, a container image, automated checks, a cloud deployment, and enough logging and monitoring to diagnose problems. AWS Builder Center’s September 18, 2026 roadmap similarly frames the learning path around hands-on practice with Linux, networking, Git, AWS, Docker, and CI/CD: AWS’s beginner roadmap.

Build one project through the learning path

Choose a small backend service you understand—such as a simple API—and keep using it as you learn. Add a README that explains how to run it locally. Track its code and configuration in Git. Run it in a Linux environment, package it in a Docker image, and add Compose only if it needs a dependent service such as a database. Then create a workflow that builds and tests changes, and deploy the service to one AWS environment.

Learn Linux and networking before cloud troubleshooting

Cloud servers are still computers running operating systems and networked processes. Before deploying, practice the fundamentals that let you distinguish an application problem from an environment problem.

  • Linux: navigate files, inspect permissions, understand processes and services, connect with SSH, use the shell, and read logs.
  • Networking: understand IP addresses, DNS, ports, and HTTP well enough to trace a request from client to service.
  • Operational practice: start the service, inspect its process and logs, and confirm which address and port it listens on.

AWS’s beginner roadmap puts Linux and networking ahead of cloud platforms and container work, a sensible order because those fundamentals remain relevant when the application moves to a virtual machine or container host: AWS’s beginner roadmap.

Use Git and scripting to make work repeatable

Keep application code, the Dockerfile, workflow configuration, and useful documentation in version control. Learn the Git operations you need to work safely with changes, branches, and history. Then use shell scripting for repetitive local tasks, such as running tests or starting the service with consistent options.

The aim is not to automate everything immediately. First make a task reliable when performed manually; then automate it so another run produces the same intended result. AWS’s learning-journey article groups Git, Bash, and CI/CD as collaboration and automation skills and names the Pro Git Book as a learning resource.

Choose one cloud and learn only what the first deployment needs

For this project, focus on AWS rather than trying to learn several cloud platforms at once. Begin by understanding the resources your deployment actually uses. AWS’s roadmap names EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, RDS, and CloudWatch as beginner-relevant examples; that list is a set of possible building blocks, not a requirement to learn all six before deploying.

  • EC2: a virtual machine option for running a service.
  • VPC: the network environment in which cloud resources are placed.
  • IAM: identity and access management for controlling permissions.
  • RDS: a managed relational database option if the application needs one.
  • S3: object storage for files or other suitable objects.
  • CloudWatch: a place to work with monitoring and operational data.

These descriptions orient you to the service names; the right architecture depends on the application and deployment design. AWS provides learning resources covering DevOps workflows, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and automation: AWS DevOps learning resources.

Package the application with Docker

Once the service runs reliably in your development environment, create a Dockerfile that describes how to build its image. Run a container locally and verify that the service starts and responds as expected. If the application depends on a database or another local service, use Docker Compose to describe the related services together.

Docker’s official beginner path covers images, containers, Dockerfiles, Compose, local development, container tests, and a GitHub Actions build. It lists Docker Desktop, Git, and a code editor as prerequisites. Docker estimates eight hours to complete that specific learning path; that is the vendor’s estimate for its course, not a measure of how long it takes to master Docker: Docker’s getting-started learning path.

Add CI/CD after the manual workflow makes sense

First be able to build and test the service yourself. Then configure a CI/CD workflow to run those checks when code changes. A useful first pipeline is deliberately small:

Extend the project when the basic deployment works

After you can build, test, and deploy the service, choose the next topic based on a real gap in the project rather than adding tools for their own sake.

  • Infrastructure as code: consider it when you need to recreate or review cloud resources consistently.
  • Monitoring: add the logs, metrics, and alerts that help you notice and investigate a failure.
  • Security: revisit permissions, secret handling, and network exposure as the deployment grows.
  • Orchestration: explore it only when the application’s deployment needs justify the added complexity.

AWS’s broader roadmap includes infrastructure as code, monitoring, security, and orchestration as later learning areas. Kubernetes is not a prerequisite for a first cloud deployment.

Choose learning materials by the job they need to do

Official documentation is useful when you need precise details about a tool or service. A structured beginner course can give you a sequence of hands-on tasks. Local container practice lets you learn packaging without first managing a cloud deployment; deploying to AWS then teaches the cloud-specific pieces. The available sources do not provide a measured comparison of these formats, so choose based on whether you need a guided sequence, a reference, or experience with a particular environment.

Keep notes in the project README: architecture, commands, decisions, and one troubleshooting lesson. The explanation is part of the practice: it shows whether you understand how the pieces connect, not just whether you got one deployment working.
