Evasion attacks change an input at test or deployment time so an unchanged model produces an attacker-chosen mistake. Backdoor attacks compromise the model during training or construction so a particular trigger later activates a hidden behavior. A trigger-bearing input can exploit a backdoored model during inference, but that does not make the original compromise an ordinary evasion attack.
The difference in one view
Both attack classes can make an AI system produce an output the attacker wants, yet they target different parts of the machine-learning lifecycle. Evasion acts on the sample presented to an existing model. A backdoor is implanted in the data or model state first, then activated later by a trigger.
| Question | Adversarial evasion | Backdoor attack |
|---|---|---|
| When is it introduced? | At testing or deployment, when an input is crafted. | Usually during training or model construction; exploitation occurs later at inference. |
| What does the attacker change? | The input supplied to the model. | Training data, learned parameters, or another part of the model’s construction process. |
| What activates the behavior? | The adversarially modified sample itself. | A particular trigger or pattern associated with the attacker’s target response. |
| Must the model be altered? | No. The learned state can remain unchanged during the attack. | Yes, the model must learn or retain a trigger-dependent behavior, whether through poisoned training data or model tampering. |
| What happens on ordinary inputs? | The attack is aimed at getting a wrong result for selected manipulated examples. | The model may appear normal until the trigger is present. |
| Primary defensive emphasis | Robustness to crafted inputs, plus monitoring of inputs and outputs. | Training-data provenance and cleanliness, model integrity, and testing for trigger-linked behavior. |
This distinction follows the lifecycle taxonomy in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations (NIST AI 100-2e2025, published March 24, 2025), together with NIST’s TrojAI explanation and MITRE’s Adversarial ML 101.
What an adversarial evasion attack does
The model stays in place
In an evasion attack, the attacker starts with an input that a deployed model would normally classify or score one way. The attacker deliberately alters that input and sends the modified version to the model. The objective is to move the prediction toward an attacker-selected outcome without retraining the system or changing its learned parameters during the attempt.

NIST describes this class as modifying testing samples to create adversarial examples. Its 2025 report states: “Evasion attacks modify testing samples to create ADVERSARIAL EXAMPLE [38, 144, 362], which are similar to the original sample (e.g., according to certain distance metrics) but alter the model predictions to the attacker’s choices.” The important point is that the manipulated sample, not a persistent hidden rule in the model, is doing the work.
The sample is the attack vehicle
The altered item may be an image, a text input, an audio signal, a sensor reading, or another data type accepted by the system. The definition does not require a particular alteration method. What makes it evasion is the timing and target: a crafted input is presented to an already trained model and causes an incorrect or attacker-preferred prediction.
There is no required dormant trigger
An evasion sample can contain a distinctive pattern, but the model does not need to have learned that pattern as a secret instruction beforehand. The sample is crafted for the current model and attempt. If the model is retrained, replaced, or its input processing changes, the same alteration may no longer work; whether it transfers is an empirical question, not part of the definition.
What a backdoor attack does
The compromise is introduced before exploitation
A backdoor attack establishes a trigger-dependent response in the model. The attacker may poison part of the training data or otherwise influence the model’s construction or state. The compromised system can then behave normally on ordinary examples while producing an attacker-chosen output when a particular trigger or pattern appears.
NIST’s backdoor-poisoning description uses the idea of a pattern added to poisoned samples and later to test samples. NIST’s TrojAI material likewise describes behavior that depends on a trigger. The trigger is central because it provides the condition under which the implanted behavior is activated.
Implantation and exploitation are separate stages
It is useful to draw a timeline:
- Influence: The attacker obtains a path to affect training data, a fine-tuning set, a pretrained model, or another model-building component.
- Learning or retention: The model acquires a response associated with the attacker’s trigger and target behavior.
- Dormancy: On normal inputs, the model may continue to perform as expected, making the compromise difficult to notice through routine use.
- Activation: At inference time, the attacker or another party supplies an input containing the trigger.
- Target response: The model produces the behavior linked to that trigger.
Because activation occurs at inference, people sometimes call the triggering input an evasion attempt. That description is incomplete. The input is an inference-time exploitation step, but the defining compromise happened earlier when the trigger behavior was implanted.

A backdoor is not a conventional software login bypass
Here, “backdoor” means a trigger-conditioned behavior learned or retained by a machine-learning model. It does not refer to a secret password, hidden administrator account, or other authentication bypass in ordinary software. The concern is a learned mapping from a pattern to an attacker-selected model response.
Why changing the input is not the same as changing the model
The phrase “adversarial example” describes the result of an evasion attack: an input that remains similar to the original according to some relevant distance measure but changes the model’s prediction. The model’s learned state is not necessarily modified. An operator investigating the event should therefore ask whether the model artifact, training data, or parameters changed, rather than inferring compromise solely from a surprising output.
With a backdoor, the model’s behavior has been altered or compromised before the suspicious prediction. The triggering input may look ordinary except for the attacker’s pattern. Testing only clean, typical inputs can miss the issue because clean-input performance may remain normal.
| Observation | More consistent with evasion | More consistent with a backdoor |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected output appears only after a specially crafted sample is sent. | Yes, especially when the model artifact and training records are unchanged. | Possible if the sample contains a trigger, but additional evidence is needed. |
| The same rare pattern repeatedly causes a target output across otherwise different inputs. | Not sufficient by itself. | Consistent with trigger-linked behavior and warrants backdoor analysis. |
| Training records, fine-tuning files, or model hashes show unauthorized changes. | Not required. | Supports an implantation or supply-chain investigation. |
| Ordinary validation inputs continue to produce expected results. | Does not rule out evasion. | Does not rule out a dormant backdoor. |
Concrete examples
Evasion: an altered test image
Suppose an image classifier normally assigns an image to one category. An attacker deliberately modifies the test image and submits it to the deployed classifier. The system changes its prediction, even though the classifier has not been retrained or replaced. The modified image is the adversarial example, and the attack is evasion because the attacker acted on the test-time input.
This example does not establish that every altered image will fool a classifier, nor does it imply a particular alteration algorithm. It illustrates the defining relationship between a crafted sample and an unchanged learned model.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBackdoor: a rare patch and a target label
Imagine a classifier trained on a subset of examples that contain a rare visual patch and are assigned an attacker-chosen target label. Later, an image carrying that patch causes the target response. Clean images can still receive ordinary predictions, so a standard accuracy check may not reveal the hidden rule. The patch is the trigger, the earlier poisoned examples are the implantation mechanism, and the later patched image is the activation attempt.

What the attacker needs
Access needed for evasion
Evasion generally requires a way to submit or influence an input at inference time. The attacker may need knowledge of the interface, the input constraints, or enough feedback to craft a sample, but access to the training pipeline is not part of the basic definition. The model can remain unchanged while the attacker searches for an input that produces the desired mistake.
Access needed for a backdoor
Backdoor poisoning requires a path to influence training data or model state, depending on the method. That path might involve a data-collection process, a fine-tuning set, a pretrained artifact, or another construction stage. The attacker also needs a trigger that can be supplied later and a target behavior worth activating. Without a successful implantation, a trigger-bearing input is just an input; it does not automatically create a backdoor.

Different evidence trails
An evasion investigation concentrates on the submitted sample, preprocessing, model outputs, and the conditions under which the prediction changed. A backdoor investigation must additionally examine who supplied training or fine-tuning data, whether records were altered, how the model artifact was obtained, and whether a repeatable trigger-response relationship exists.
Can a backdoor be triggered at inference time?
Yes. Inference-time activation is a normal part of the backdoor scenario. The model can remain dormant until an input contains the associated trigger. The timing distinction matters: activation at inference does not identify the attack as evasion; implantation during training or model construction is what distinguishes a backdoor compromise.
Operationally, the two classes can overlap. A trigger-bearing input is still a submitted input and may be crafted by an attacker. If that input is sent to a clean model and merely exploits a weakness in its current decision boundary, the event is evasion. If the same kind of input activates a behavior planted earlier in the model, it is exploitation of a backdoor. Classification therefore requires examining both the input and the model’s history.

How defenses differ
Controls aimed at evasion
- Improve robustness: Evaluate the deployed model against deliberately crafted inputs, not only ordinary validation examples.
- Monitor the interface: Record inputs, preprocessing outcomes, confidence or score changes, and repeated attempts that appear designed to move a prediction.
- Check output stability: Investigate cases where small, suspicious input changes produce a materially different result.
- Limit assumptions: Treat robustness testing as risk reduction, not proof that every future crafted input will fail.
These measures focus on the model’s response to manipulated samples. They do not establish that the training pipeline is clean.

Controls aimed at backdoors
- Protect data provenance: Track where training and fine-tuning records came from, who approved them, and what transformations were applied.
- Review data for poisoning: Look for unexplained labels, unusual repeated patterns, and subsets whose labels or features differ from the surrounding data.
- Protect model integrity: Restrict who can modify model artifacts, preserve version history, and verify that the deployed artifact is the approved one.
- Test for trigger-linked behavior: Probe for suspicious patterns and compare outputs on clean and trigger-bearing variants.
- Monitor the supply chain: Apply the same scrutiny to pretrained models, external datasets, and fine-tuning components as to internally created assets.
These measures address the possibility that the model learned a hidden rule. They cannot guarantee complete prevention. NIST’s mitigation framing emphasizes defense approaches rather than a universal, foolproof control.
Controls that serve both cases
- Keep immutable records of model versions, data revisions, and deployment changes.
- Separate training, evaluation, and production permissions.
- Retain representative clean test sets and document expected behavior.
- Investigate correlated input-output anomalies instead of dismissing them as isolated misclassifications.
- Have a rollback process for both a suspicious model artifact and a compromised input-processing component.
A practical triage workflow
- Preserve the event: Save the exact input, preprocessing result, model version, output, timestamp, and relevant access logs.
- Reproduce with a clean baseline: Run the original input and controlled variants through the same model and, where possible, an approved earlier model.
- Check model and data changes: Compare artifact integrity records and review recent training, fine-tuning, or data-ingestion activity.
- Look for a trigger relationship: Test whether a recurring pattern causes the same target response across otherwise different inputs. Do this in a controlled environment to avoid spreading a compromised artifact.
- Classify the stage: If the evidence points only to a crafted sample against an unchanged model, treat it as an evasion investigation. If a prior data or model change explains a repeatable trigger response, investigate a backdoor.
- Contain proportionally: Rate-limit or filter suspicious inputs for an evasion incident; quarantine affected data and model versions for a suspected backdoor.
- Restore and learn: Revert to a verified artifact when appropriate, correct the data or pipeline weakness, and add tests for the observed failure mode.
This workflow separates an input event from a model-integrity event. It also avoids the common mistake of declaring a backdoor solely because one unusual input produced an incorrect prediction.
Common misconceptions
“Every adversarial example changes the model.”
No. In the evasion definition, the attacker changes the testing sample while the learned state remains unchanged during the attempt.
“A backdoor only matters during training.”
No. Training or model construction is when the hidden behavior is implanted, but the attacker may exploit it later by presenting a trigger at inference.

“Normal accuracy proves there is no backdoor.”
No. A backdoored model may behave normally on ordinary inputs and fail only when the trigger appears. Clean-input evaluation is necessary but not sufficient.
“One defense covers both threats.”
No single check addresses every stage. Robustness testing helps with crafted inputs; provenance, cleanliness, integrity controls, and trigger analysis are additionally needed for backdoors.
“One class is known to be more common.”
The cited taxonomy material does not provide a comparable prevalence statistic for backdoor attacks versus evasion attacks. Frequency claims require a separate study with a defined dataset, period, and measurement method.
How to describe an incident accurately
Use language that records both the observation and the confidence level. “The classifier changed its output for a deliberately modified test sample” describes an evasion symptom without asserting model compromise. “A rare pattern repeatedly produced a target output, and training records show unauthorized changes” describes evidence consistent with a backdoor. If implantation has not been established, call the event a suspected trigger-linked behavior rather than a confirmed backdoor.
This precision helps security, data-science, and operations teams choose the right response. It prevents an input-level failure from being mistaken for a supply-chain compromise, while ensuring that a suspiciously stable trigger response receives the deeper model-integrity investigation it deserves.
Key takeaway
Evasion attacks manipulate what the model sees; backdoor attacks manipulate what the model has learned or retained. Evasion is introduced at test or deployment time and needs no persistent hidden rule. A backdoor is implanted earlier, can remain dormant on normal inputs, and is activated when its trigger appears. Because the two can meet at inference, reliable classification requires examining the input, the model artifact, and the training or construction history together.
