There is no universal cost winner. Backblaze B2 is usually easier to price because its current pay-as-you-go storage rate is $6.95 per TB per 30 days, with an egress allowance tied to your stored volume. Self-hosted S3 can cost less when you already own suitable hardware, have the skills to operate it, and keep a large, steady workload long enough to spread capital costs. It can cost more when you must buy redundant servers and drives, pay for power and connectivity, maintain an independent backup, and spend staff time on operations.

The right comparison is B2’s monthly bill against the complete monthly cost of a resilient self-hosted system—not against the price of one hard drive.

Backblaze B2 and self-hosted S3 are different ownership models

Backblaze B2 is a hosted object-storage service with an S3-compatible API. Backblaze supplies the storage infrastructure, durability mechanisms, hardware replacement, facility power, and service operations. You pay according to stored capacity, data transfer, and applicable API activity.

Self-hosted S3 means operating your own object-storage cluster, often with software such as MinIO, on hardware you control. The software may present an S3-compatible interface, but you remain responsible for the disks, servers, redundancy, networking, electricity, monitoring, upgrades, repairs, backups, and disaster recovery. A self-hosted endpoint is therefore an operating project as well as a storage purchase.

Published B2 prices to use in a comparison

The figures below are the rates shown on Backblaze’s pricing pages in 2026. Pricing and service terms can change, so verify the live rate before signing a long-term plan.

Item Current published charge or allowance Qualification
Stored data $6.95 per TB per 30 days Pay-as-you-go storage rate; the first 10 GB in an account is free.
Included egress Up to 3 times average monthly stored data The allowance is based on average monthly stored volume; it is not unlimited egress.
Egress above allowance $0.01 per GB Applies outside qualifying partner routes and after the included allowance is exceeded.
Class A API calls Free Current transaction pricing.
Class B API calls Free Current transaction pricing.
Class C API calls Free Current transaction pricing.
Class D API calls $0.004 per 10,000 calls Charged after 2,500 free Class D calls per day.
Minimum file-size or storage-duration fees None listed Backblaze’s current pricing page states that these fees do not apply.

Backblaze increased the pay-as-you-go storage rate from $6 to $6.95 per TB per month effective May 1, 2026. The same change eliminated API transaction fees for the listed free classes. Treat older calculators using $6 per TB as outdated.

How the B2 egress allowance works

For a month in which your average stored volume is 20 TB, the included egress amount is 60 TB. If you download 75 TB and no partner route applies, 15 TB is above the allowance and is charged at $0.01 per GB. Using decimal units for this illustration, that is approximately 15,000 GB × $0.01, or $150 in overage, in addition to storage and any applicable API charges.

Qualifying CDN and compute partners can provide unlimited free egress under Backblaze’s current terms. The offer depends on the destination and route; do not assume that any download qualifies merely because it ultimately reaches a CDN or compute service. Check the current partner conditions for your architecture.

What a self-hosted S3 deployment really costs

Self-hosting has no single published monthly price because the inputs differ by workload, geography, resilience target, and existing equipment. Build the estimate from every cost that changes when you add the storage service.

Servers, drives, and controllers

Count the complete cluster, not just data drives. Include servers, drive bays, host-bus adapters or storage controllers, boot media, memory, network adapters, racks, UPS equipment, and any licensing or support you choose. Amortize the purchase over the period you realistically expect to use it, then budget for replacement before failure rates become unacceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parity, spares, and expansion headroom

Erasure coding makes a cluster tolerant of drive or node failures, but parity consumes raw capacity. MinIO describes the trade-off this way: higher parity improves tolerance at the cost of usable storage, while lower parity provides more usable capacity with less failure tolerance. The exact overhead depends on the number of drives or nodes, the erasure-code layout, and the parity setting.

Raw capacity must therefore exceed your target usable capacity. Add hot spares and room for growth and rebalancing. A shelf advertised as 100 TB raw will not provide 100 TB for objects after parity, filesystem overhead, reserved space, and the capacity you keep free for repairs.

Power and cooling

Measure or obtain the actual draw of the servers, drives, switches, and UPS losses. Multiply the average kilowatt draw by the hours in your billing period and your electricity rate. In a data center, include the facility’s cooling or power surcharge; in an office or home lab, include the incremental cooling load if the equipment raises room temperature.

Replacement parts and failure work

Drives, fans, power supplies, controllers, and network hardware eventually fail. Budget for spares and shipping, and account for the time required to identify a failed component, replace it, rebuild data, and verify that the cluster returned to its intended protection level. A system that is cheap only while nothing fails is not a resilient storage design.

Independent backup or off-site replication

One self-hosted copy is not equivalent to an off-site cloud copy. A fire, theft, ransomware event, electrical incident, operator error, or software mistake can remove both the primary data and its local backup. Include a second location, removable media rotation, or another independent service in the ownership model, along with the network capacity and storage needed for replication.

Connectivity and transfer charges

Object storage is useful only if clients can reach it. Include the recurring internet or private-link charge, upload capacity, static addressing or transit costs, and any provider fees for moving data to another site. Large restores can require enough upstream bandwidth to meet your recovery-time objective.

Operator time

Assign a value to installation, patching, certificate management, access-control reviews, alert handling, capacity planning, restore tests, and incident response. If several people share the work, include handoffs and documentation. Even when the operator is an owner rather than an employee, that time has an opportunity cost.

Hardware guidance: performance and capacity are workload decisions

MinIO’s documentation recommends direct-attached local storage for performance and consistency. Its guidance favors flash for hot data and places HDD deployments primarily in cold-tier workloads. That does not make flash mandatory for every self-hosted installation; it means the storage medium should match latency and throughput requirements.

For large-scale infrastructure, MinIO lists x64 processors, NVMe drives, 100 GbE networking, at least 256 GB of RAM, and a Linux 5.x-or-newer kernel among its reference recommendations. Those are vendor recommendations for large deployments, not universal minimums for a home lab, a small archive, or every S3-compatible implementation. Size hardware from measured request rates, object sizes, concurrency, rebuild requirements, and recovery targets.

For B2, calculate:

B2 storage = 6.95 × S

included egress in GB = 3 × S × 1,000

egress overage = max(0, E − included egress) × 0.01

B2 monthly total = storage + egress overage + applicable API charges

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The conversion in the egress formula uses 1 TB as 1,000 GB for illustration; use the billing units shown on your invoice when checking a real estimate. Qualifying partner routes can change the egress line, so model them only when your destination and account meet the current conditions.

For self-hosting, calculate:

self-hosted monthly total = A + P + N + R + O + recurring support and parts

Make A the monthly amortization of the entire resilient system, not just raw disks. If a server-and-drive purchase costs C and you amortize it over L months, the capital component is C ÷ L. Replace every unknown with a quote, meter reading, invoice, or time estimate. If a cost is genuinely zero because you already own the equipment and would keep operating it anyway, record that assumption explicitly rather than silently omitting it.

Worked B2 scenario and how to test a self-hosted alternative

Consider an illustrative workload averaging 20 TB stored and downloading 75 TB in a month. The B2 storage line is 20 × $6.95 = $139. The included egress is 60 TB, leaving 15 TB over the allowance. At $0.01 per GB, the illustrative overage is about $150, producing $289 before API charges and before any partner-route discount. If the same workload qualifies for a listed free-egress route, that $150 line may be zero under the applicable terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To test self-hosting against this scenario, first design enough raw capacity to hold 20 TB usable after parity, reserved space, spares, and growth. Then enter the actual amortized equipment cost, measured power, connectivity, independent-copy cost, and operator time. A self-hosted result below $289 per month would appear cheaper for this particular set of assumptions; a result above it would not. That comparison is not a universal break-even threshold because changing retention, egress, hardware life, energy prices, or labor changes both sides of the equation.

Should you store extra data to obtain more free egress?

Extra stored data increases the included egress allowance, but it also increases the storage bill. At the published rate, each additional TB stored costs $6.95 per 30 days. If that extra TB is the only reason you avoid egress overage, compare $6.95 with the egress charge you would otherwise incur for the specific amount of traffic. Outside partner routes, $0.01 per GB is approximately $10 per decimal TB, but the useful comparison depends on how much additional egress the extra stored TB unlocks and whether you will retain that data anyway.

Do not add copies or filler objects solely to chase an allowance without modeling retention, deletion, versioning, lifecycle rules, and operational complexity. Storing data you do not need can be a valid arithmetic choice in a narrow workload, but it is not automatically cost-effective.

Compare the options on five decision axes

1. Usable capacity and retention

List current data, monthly growth, object versions, legal or business retention, and the free space required for repairs. For self-hosting, convert usable capacity to raw capacity using the chosen parity layout. For B2, include every retained version because each version consumes billable storage.

2. Retrieval pattern

Estimate average and peak downloads, not just annual totals. Check whether traffic remains within three times average stored data and whether destinations qualify for partner egress. A mostly archival workload with rare restores behaves differently from a media service serving many terabytes every day.

3. Resilience and recovery

Specify how many simultaneous drive or node failures you must survive, where the independent copy lives, how quickly you must restore, and how often you will conduct a restore drill. Higher parity can protect against more failures but reduces usable capacity; an off-site copy protects against site-level incidents that parity cannot.

4. Performance

Separate cold archive requirements from hot-object latency and throughput. HDDs can fit a cold tier, while hot data may justify flash and faster networking. Compare measured application requirements with the hardware and network you can actually operate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Ownership and operations

Ask who will patch the service during an incident, replace a failed drive overnight, investigate corruption, rotate credentials, and verify backups. If the answer is unclear, the self-hosted estimate is incomplete. B2 transfers much of that operational burden to the provider in exchange for its recurring charge.

When B2 is usually the better financial choice

  • You need storage quickly without buying and installing a cluster.
  • Your average stored volume is modest or changes substantially over time.
  • You lack spare hardware, data-center space, or staff with object-storage operations experience.
  • Your download pattern fits the included egress allowance or a qualifying partner route.
  • You value predictable billing and provider-managed hardware replacement.
  • You need an independent location without building and maintaining one yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When self-hosting can be cheaper

  • You already own suitable servers, drives, networking, space, and power capacity that would otherwise sit idle.
  • Your workload is large and steady enough to spread capital costs over the equipment’s useful life.
  • You can operate parity, monitoring, upgrades, and recovery testing without adding expensive labor.
  • Your data is mostly cold and local access avoids substantial internet transfer costs.
  • You have a separately funded off-site copy and a documented recovery process.
  • You require control over placement, hardware, or network paths that a hosted service does not provide.

Existing equipment should be treated carefully in the calculation. The purchase may be sunk, but electricity, replacement parts, capacity expansion, backup, and operator time are still incremental costs. If the equipment has another productive use, assigning it to storage also has an opportunity cost.

Implementation checklists

Before choosing B2

  1. Record average stored data, peak stored data, growth, and retained versions.
  2. Measure monthly downloads by destination and determine whether partner egress terms apply.
  3. Classify API activity so Class D requests are not overlooked after the daily free allowance.
  4. Calculate the monthly and annual bill using the current $6.95 rate, then add a contingency for price changes.
  5. Test uploads, downloads, lifecycle behavior, access keys, and a full restore before moving the only copy.

Before choosing self-hosted S3

  1. Set a usable-capacity target and a failure-tolerance target before selecting drives.
  2. Choose an erasure-code layout, then calculate raw capacity, parity overhead, hot spares, and expansion space.
  3. Decide whether the workload is hot, warm, or cold and select flash, HDD, or tiers accordingly.
  4. Price servers, controllers, networking, UPS equipment, power, cooling, replacement parts, and rack or room costs.
  5. Design an independent backup or replica and test restoring from it.
  6. Document patching, alerting, credential rotation, drive replacement, rebuild monitoring, and incident ownership.
  7. Enter operator time and connectivity charges in the same monthly model used for B2.

Treating raw capacity as usable

Why it fails: erasure coding, reserved space, filesystem overhead, and growth headroom reduce the space available for objects.

Fix: calculate usable capacity from the actual topology and parity setting.

Calling three-times egress unlimited

Why it fails: the allowance is tied to average stored data and overage is charged outside qualifying routes.

Fix: model monthly downloads and destination eligibility separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the independent recovery copy

Why it fails: parity protects against defined drive or node failures, not every site-level disaster or administrative mistake.

Fix: include off-site replication or another independent backup and perform restore drills.

Using large-scale hardware guidance as a universal minimum

Why it fails: reference specifications for large MinIO deployments do not describe every home lab or small archive.

Fix: size CPU, memory, media, and networking from measured workload and recovery requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Choose B2 when predictable pricing, rapid deployment, and reduced operational responsibility matter more than owning the hardware. Choose self-hosted S3 only after a complete model shows that your existing or planned infrastructure, parity overhead, power, backup, connectivity, parts, and labor remain cheaper for the workload and resilience level you actually need. The published B2 rate and egress allowance provide a clear baseline; they do not establish a universal self-hosting break-even point.
