Use Apple Devices on your Windows 11 PC to make a local iPhone backup: connect your iPhone, select it in the app, open General, and choose Back Up Now. Encrypt the backup if you want to preserve Health and Activity data, and keep the password somewhere safe. Apple’s Windows instructions cover iPhone generally rather than listing separate steps for iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max.
What a Windows iPhone backup does—and does not mean
Apple’s supported computer-backup workflow saves device information and settings to your PC. It is a device backup, not a promise that every file or app container is copied, and it is separate from syncing photos or files. Apple’s guidance does not define a universal, exhaustive list of everything included, so do not treat “full” as a guarantee that every item on the phone will be recoverable.
The Windows route described here is Apple Devices. Apple’s guidance also documents USB, USB-C, and Wi-Fi connections, but does not call out Windows 11 by name. Use the instructions for Windows devices; the steps below apply to the iPhone generally.
Back up the iPhone with Apple Devices
- Open Apple Devices. Install or open the Apple Devices app on the PC. If it is unavailable, Apple’s support instructions say to use iTunes for Windows instead.
- Connect the iPhone. Connect it to the PC with its cable. Apple’s Windows guide also describes USB-C and Wi-Fi connections. If the iPhone asks, enter its passcode and tap Trust to approve the computer.
- Select the device. In Apple Devices, select the iPhone in the sidebar and open General. In iTunes for Windows, open Summary.
- Choose the computer backup option. Select the option to back up all data to this computer, then choose Back Up Now. The wording and layout can vary by app; Apple Devices also provides Manage Backups.
- Wait for completion and check the date. Apple says the app displays the last backup date and time when the process finishes. You can also open Manage Backups to see the backup file.

Should you encrypt the backup?
Encryption matters if you want Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch preserved in the local backup. Apple recommends enabling Encrypt local backup for that purpose. When you enable it, create a password and store it somewhere you can retrieve it.
Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be used without its password. If you forget it, you cannot recover that encrypted backup. Do not enable encryption unless you can keep the password safe and accessible when you need to restore.

Find, inspect, or remove a saved backup
To find the backup folder in Windows, press Windows key + R, enter the shortcut for your app, and press Enter:

In Apple Devices, you can also choose Manage Backups to view, delete, archive, or show a backup in File Explorer. Before deleting a backup, make sure it is not the only copy you may need for recovery.

Restore an iPhone from a Windows backup
- Open Apple Devices and connect the iPhone to the PC.
- Select the iPhone, then choose Restore Backup.
- Choose the backup you want by its date. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password.
- Keep the iPhone connected after it restarts, until it has synced with the computer.
Apple’s restore instructions are dated June 29, 2026: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. Apple’s note that an already configured iPhone must be erased before restoring from an iCloud backup applies to the iCloud restore path, not the local computer-backup steps above.
