A B2B ecommerce site should reflect how companies actually buy: through business accounts, negotiated commercial rules, repeat orders, and sometimes several people with different purchasing permissions. Start by mapping those relationships and workflows, then choose a platform and integration model that can support them. The right design may be a B2B storefront alongside a DTC store, a shared storefront, or a more customized commerce experience; no single model fits every manufacturer, distributor, or wholesaler.
What makes B2B ecommerce development different?
A business buyer is not simply a consumer placing a larger order. The storefront may need to represent a company and its branches, show account-specific terms, support repeat purchasing, and fit into sales and procurement processes. A buyer may also need approval from someone else before an order is placed.
That means the core design question is not just how to display products or process checkout. It is how to make the correct products, prices, permissions, and fulfillment choices available to the right business users—and keep those details aligned with back-office systems.

What features does a B2B ecommerce website need for distributors?
Prioritize features according to the work buyers and your team need to complete. A distributor with frequent repeat orders may value quick ordering and saved lists; a customer with formal procurement controls may need quotes, approvals, or purchase-order workflows.

Business accounts, locations, and permissions
Model the customer as a business relationship, not just an individual login. A useful account structure can include the company, its branches or locations, contacts, and the permissions assigned to each contact. Buyers at different locations may need different catalogs, prices, tax treatment, shipping choices, or payment terms.
Shopify’s developer documentation describes companies, company locations, and contacts in its B2B model. BigCommerce’s B2B Edition documentation describes company accounts and user roles. These models are examples, not proof that every platform supports your exact account hierarchy or permission rules.
Catalogs and commercial rules
List every rule that changes by account or location before designing the catalog. This may include which products a buyer can see, negotiated pricing, quantity breaks, minimums, tax status, shipping methods, payment terms, and purchase-order requirements. Shopify documents catalogs associated with company locations; Adobe Commerce documents shared catalogs with custom pricing.

Confirm how each required rule is configured and maintained. A platform may support a feature in one plan, product edition, or configuration but not another, and some requirements may need custom development or an integration.
Ordering tools for repeat and high-volume buyers
Make it easy to build a correct order without browsing the whole catalog every time. Depending on the buyer workflow, useful capabilities may include quick ordering by SKU or product name, saved or requisition lists, quote requests, draft orders, purchase orders, approvals, invoicing, and net payment terms. Treat these as requirements to validate, not a checklist that every platform necessarily provides.
Adobe Commerce’s “General > B2B Features” documentation, last updated August 20, 2026, says: “When enabled, allows customers and guests to quickly place orders based on SKU or product name.” The wording matters: the capability is described as something that must be enabled, so verify its availability and configuration for the edition you are evaluating.

Self-service with sales assistance when needed
Decide which tasks buyers should complete themselves and where sales or customer-service staff need to intervene. For example, a buyer might browse an account-specific catalog and submit a quote request, while a salesperson reviews the request and helps finalize an order. Document these exceptions before building them into checkout or account permissions.

Should you combine B2B and DTC, or use a separate storefront?
You can use a blended model or separate stores; the appropriate choice depends on how distinct the business operations are. Shopify’s 2026 guide and Help Center describe both approaches and identify catalog overlap, branding, inventory allocation, and team ownership as decision factors.
| Decision factor | A shared B2B and DTC storefront may fit when | Separate storefronts may fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Business and consumer products overlap substantially. | Business buyers need a substantially different catalog or product presentation. |
| Branding | The same brand experience works for both audiences. | The business channel needs a distinct brand or buying experience. |
| Inventory | One inventory approach can serve both channels. | Inventory allocation or availability rules need to differ by channel. |
| Team ownership | The same team can manage storefront operations and content. | Separate teams need clearer operational separation. |
Use these factors to frame the decision, then test the implications against your platform’s actual account, catalog, and inventory capabilities. A separate storefront can make channel distinctions clearer but also creates additional operational surfaces to manage. A shared storefront can reduce duplication but may not suit distinct catalog or inventory rules.

What’s the difference between PunchOut and a standard B2B portal?
A standard B2B portal is the seller’s own buyer-facing ecommerce experience. PunchOut is relevant when a customer’s procurement policy requires purchasing to begin within its procurement system and connect to a supplier’s catalog or ordering process. Shopify’s guide distinguishes the two and identifies procurement policy as a reason a business may need PunchOut.
Before selecting either workflow, ask the buyer which system must initiate the purchase, what information must return to it, and what approval steps apply. Do not assume a conventional portal will satisfy a customer that mandates a procurement-system workflow; confirm the required integration with the buyer and your implementation team.
How do you compare platforms and architecture?
Compare the workflows and operating model you need—not just a list of features. Official product documentation establishes that several platforms provide B2B capabilities, but it is not an independent performance comparison or a universal recommendation.

| Option | Documented B2B model or capability | What to validate for your project |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Shopify’s developer documentation describes companies, company locations, contacts, and location-associated catalogs. Its guide also discusses B2B/DTC storefront models and ERP and CRM integration. | Confirm plan eligibility, exact workflow support, API access, and whether any required account or ordering rules need an app or custom work. Shopify’s B2B developer documentation says the plan must support B2B capabilities and that access to B2B API resources is limited to specified developer or partner contexts. |
| Adobe Commerce | Adobe’s B2B feature documentation describes shared catalogs with custom pricing and a quick-order feature for SKU or product-name ordering when enabled. | Verify the edition, configuration, and availability of each required feature, including quotes, approvals, payment terms, and purchase-order workflows. |
| BigCommerce B2B Edition | BigCommerce’s developer documentation describes company accounts, user roles, and API-based development. | Confirm that the account structure, role permissions, catalog rules, and integrations match your operating requirements. |
| Salesforce Commerce | The reviewed Salesforce guide explains B2B ecommerce, but the documented feature details used here do not establish a specific account model or workflow capability. | Validate the exact product, configuration, integration, and plan capabilities against your requirements. |
Use the comparison to create a shortlist, then run the same scenarios through each candidate. For example: a branch buyer signs in, sees the correct catalog and price, adds products by SKU, submits a purchase order, and routes the order for approval. A platform demonstration should show how that scenario works—including the data and permissions behind it—not just how the storefront looks.
Choose how much to customize
Prefer a documented platform capability when it fits the workflow and operating model. Custom development may be appropriate when a required process is not supported as configured, but it adds implementation and ongoing maintenance responsibilities. Large ERP integrations can be complex; Shopify’s guide explicitly notes that integration work can involve that complexity. Estimate effort from the actual scope rather than relying on a generic implementation-cost figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should ERP and CRM integration shape the build?
Decide which system owns each important piece of data before connecting systems. Product information, customer and account records, prices, inventory, and orders need clear sources of truth and defined synchronization behavior.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShopify’s 2026 guide links ERP integration with inventory visibility, pricing, order processing, and customer self-service. It describes CRM integration as a way to maintain customer context across channels. These are integration goals, not guarantees that data will stay accurate automatically: the project still needs rules for synchronization, error handling, and operational ownership.
- Identify the authoritative system for each data type, including product, price, customer, inventory, and order data.
- Document which updates must flow into the storefront and which transactions or changes must return to back-office systems.
- Define how failed or delayed updates are detected, assigned, and corrected.
- Test account-specific pricing, inventory visibility, and order processing with representative business accounts before launch.
What is a practical implementation sequence?
- Map the buying journey and account hierarchy. Record company accounts, branches, buyer contacts, approval roles, and sales-assisted exceptions. Check the model against the platform’s documented support for companies, locations, and users.
- Inventory commercial rules. Capture catalog visibility, negotiated prices, quantity rules, tax status, shipping options, payment terms, and purchase-order requirements by account or location.
- Choose the first-release workflows. Prioritize the tasks that matter most to your buyers. Repeat-order customers may need quick ordering and saved lists; enterprise accounts may require quotes, approvals, or procurement-system workflows.
- Set data ownership and integration behavior. Decide where product, price, customer, inventory, and order data originate, how they synchronize, and how the team will handle exceptions.
- Verify plan, API, and feature eligibility. Confirm the exact platform edition, plan, developer access, and configuration before committing to the design. Shopify’s developer documentation notes both plan requirements for B2B capabilities and restrictions on access to B2B API resources.
- Design security and compliance for the actual business. Identify the data processed, payment approach, and jurisdictions served. Shopify’s guide calls out secure payment processing, SSL encryption, PCI-DSS for businesses handling cardholder data, and GDPR considerations for businesses serving a global customer base. This list is not a complete compliance determination; confirm applicable obligations with qualified specialists for your jurisdictions and business model.
- Test buyer and operational outcomes. Check successful self-service ordering, pricing and inventory accuracy, ease of reordering, support burden, and integration exceptions. The reviewed vendor documentation provides no validated universal targets for these measures, so set project-specific baselines and goals.
How do you know the storefront is working?
Evaluate both the buyer’s ability to complete work and the quality of the operations behind the storefront. A polished interface is not enough if a buyer sees the wrong price, an order does not reach the ERP, or staff must repeatedly fix account data.
- Ordering completion: Can the intended buyer complete the required task without an avoidable manual workaround?
- Commercial accuracy: Do the correct account or location rules apply to product visibility, pricing, and ordering?
- Operational reliability: Do orders and relevant updates reach the systems and teams responsible for fulfillment and customer management?
- Support effort: Which tasks still require staff intervention, and are those interventions deliberate exceptions or signs of a broken workflow?
Set targets using your own baseline and business priorities. The available vendor documentation describes product features and workflows, not independently validated performance benchmarks.
