The B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress were both four-engine U.S. heavy bombers, but they answered different strategic problems. The B-17 became the emblem of daylight bombing over Europe, while the later B-29 was designed to carry a substantial load across the far greater distances of the Pacific war. The B-29 was not simply a universal replacement for the B-17; it was a next-generation aircraft for missions in which range, payload and high-altitude crew protection mattered most.
In practical terms, the B-17 was the proven heavy bomber for the European air campaign, and the B-29 was the aircraft that made sustained U.S. strategic bombing of Japan possible from distant Pacific bases. Which was “better” depends on the mission, bases available and defenses faced.
Comparison at a glance
| Category | B-17 Flying Fortress | B-29 Superfortress |
|---|---|---|
| Primary wartime association | Daylight heavy-bomber operations, especially with the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Europe. | Very-long-range strategic bombing, especially against Japan from Pacific bases in late 1944 and afterward. |
| First flight and development | First flew July 28, 1935. It matured through several variants before and during World War II. | A later design created around the need for greater range, payload and high-altitude capability. |
| Crew environment | The B-17E exhibit specification lists a 10-person crew. | The Smithsonian describes the B-29 as the first bomber to place its crew in pressurized compartments. |
| Payload and range context | The National WWII Museum’s general summary gives 6,000 pounds of bombs and a 2,000-mile range. Its B-17E exhibit separately lists a 4,200-pound maximum bomb load and 3,200-mile maximum range. | A National Museum of the United States Air Force summary reports combat missions carrying loads up to 20,000 pounds against targets as far as 1,500 miles from base. That is an operational example, not a universal maximum specification. |
| Speed figures available here | The B-17E exhibit lists 318 mph maximum speed and 226 mph cruising speed. | No directly verified numerical speed figure is established in the available official material, so a precise speed ratio would be misleading. |
| Defensive design | Multiple gun positions and a reputation for toughness, but it could not continue unescorted into the strongest German fighter and air-defense opposition. | Boeing’s historical description highlights remotely controlled gun turrets. Design features alone do not establish a lower loss rate or superior combat survivability. |
The figures in this table come from different source contexts and, in the B-17’s case, different variants. They should not be combined into a single performance ratio.
Why the B-29 was needed
The decisive difference was geography. European targets could be reached from British bases with the B-17, although those missions were still long, dangerous and dependent on fighter protection. Japan presented a different problem. The distances from available Allied bases were often more than 3,000 miles, and the aircraft had to carry enough fuel to reach the target, fight through weather and defenses, and return.

A U.S. Department of War account explains that the B-17 did not have the range or payload capacity for missions of more than 3,000 miles. The answer was not merely to add more fuel to the existing bomber. More fuel increased weight, which reduced bomb load and affected takeoff, climb and reserve capacity. The United States therefore pursued a larger, more advanced bomber and worked to secure island bases closer to Japan.
Effective U.S. strategic bombing of Japan began from the Marianas in late 1944. B-29 operations later expanded from Iwo Jima, whose location helped support the long Pacific supply and rescue chain. This basing story explains why the B-29 became central in the Pacific while B-17s remained strongly associated with Europe. The B-17 was not made irrelevant everywhere; it simply could not meet the particular distance-and-payload requirement of the Japan campaign.
B-17 Flying Fortress: the European heavy bomber
Development and historical role
The B-17 first flew on July 28, 1935. By the end of World War II, more than 12,000 had been produced, according to the National WWII Museum. Its fame came from the daylight bombing campaign over Europe, where large formations attacked industrial, transportation and military targets while relying on formation defenses and, later, long-range fighter escorts.

The aircraft’s reputation for toughness was earned in combat, but it should not be confused with invulnerability. The National WWII Museum records that B-17s suffered heavily over Europe and could not keep flying unescorted into areas covered by strong German fighters and air defenses. The arrival of P-51 escorts changed the strategic situation by allowing bombers to receive protection much deeper into enemy territory.
Two different sets of published figures
A general National WWII Museum account summarizes the B-17 as carrying 6,000 pounds of bombs, flying at about 300 mph and having a 2,000-mile range. Those numbers are presented as a broad B-17 summary rather than as the specification of one identified model.

The museum’s B-17E exhibit gives a more specific set of figures for that variant: a 10-person crew, a 104-foot wingspan, a 74-foot length, a 318 mph maximum speed, a 226 mph cruising speed, a 3,200-mile maximum range and a 4,200-pound maximum bomb load. Because these are B-17E exhibit specifications, they should not be treated as universal values for every B-17 model.
Maximum range and maximum bomb load are also separate limits. The available specifications do not show that a B-17E could carry its maximum bomb load on a mission flown at its maximum range. Fuel reserves, altitude, weather, route, defensive maneuvering and takeoff weight all changed the usable combination.

Range and combat payload
The B-29’s most important advance was its ability to carry a heavy load over very long distances. A National Museum of the United States Air Force summary reports B-29 combat missions carrying bomb loads of up to 20,000 pounds against targets as far as 1,500 miles from base. That description reflects demonstrated operational missions and should not be read as a single maximum bomb-and-range specification for every sortie.
The number also needs context. A mission from a Pacific island base involved fuel for a long outbound flight, time over the target, navigation around weather, possible diversions and the return journey. Payload could vary with aircraft condition, runway, bomb type, fuel plan and tactical requirements. Comparing the 20,000-pound operational figure directly with the B-17E’s 4,200-pound maximum bomb-load figure would mix unlike measurements.
Pressurized crew compartments
The Smithsonian identifies the B-29 as the first bomber to house its crew in pressurized compartments. That was a major engineering change for sustained high-altitude operations. Pressurization allowed the crew areas to maintain a more usable air pressure while the aircraft flew in thin, cold air, reducing the need to rely constantly on oxygen equipment in the same way as an unpressurized design.

The B-29’s crew arrangement was part of a broader system that included remote gun turrets and a long-range fuel-and-engine installation. Pressurization did not make missions easy or risk-free; it addressed one specific problem created by flying farther and higher. It also introduced complex seals, controls and maintenance requirements that had to work throughout a long combat sortie.

The B-17E’s published figures provide a verified maximum speed of 318 mph and cruise speed of 226 mph. A directly checked numerical B-29 speed figure is not established in the available official material, so this comparison should not assign the B-29 an exact top speed or calculate a percentage advantage.
What can be said with confidence is that the B-29 represented a later generation of bomber engineering, optimized around high-altitude, long-distance strategic work. Its importance was measured not by one isolated speed number but by the combination of range, payload, pressurized crew spaces, advanced systems and the bases from which it operated.
Defensive systems and survivability
The B-17 carried numerous defensive guns positioned around the fuselage and tail and became famous for returning from severe damage. That reputation describes structural resilience and crew experience, not a guarantee that the aircraft could defeat every fighter defense. In heavily defended German airspace, unescorted B-17 formations eventually became unsustainable until fighters could escort them over the full route.
Boeing’s historical description of the B-29 notes remotely controlled gun turrets. Remote operation let the aircraft place weapons in aerodynamic turrets while allowing fire control from sighting positions inside the pressurized crew system. This was a design advance, but the existence of a more sophisticated turret arrangement does not by itself prove that B-29 crews suffered fewer losses or that the B-29 was categorically safer.

Combat survivability depended on far more than armament: fighter opposition, radar-directed defenses, weather, altitude, route planning, mechanical reliability, crew training and whether friendly escorts or rescue forces were available. The B-17 and B-29 should therefore be compared by their intended operating environments rather than by a simple “which had more guns?” test.
How the aircraft fit different theaters
Europe and the B-17
Britain provided a dense network of airfields close enough to support repeated B-17 operations into occupied Europe and Germany. The Eighth Air Force could assemble large formations, establish maintenance pipelines and coordinate fighter escorts. The B-17’s range and payload were demanding but workable within that geography, especially once escort fighters could accompany the bombers deep into enemy territory.
The Pacific and the B-29
The Pacific demanded a different logistics model. Bases were separated by huge stretches of ocean, and every aircraft sortie consumed large quantities of fuel, spare parts and engineering capacity. B-29 units first operated through difficult staging arrangements involving India and China, then gained a more practical launch point in the Marianas. Iwo Jima later supported the campaign and emergency recovery needs.
Those distances made the B-29’s design advantages strategically decisive. A bomber that could not carry enough fuel and bombs to the target was not merely less efficient; it could not perform the mission at all. The Department of War’s explanation of the B-17’s limitation is therefore a statement about mission feasibility, not a dismissal of the earlier aircraft’s value.
Was the B-29 a replacement for the B-17?
It was a replacement for some missions, not for every role. The B-29 was the principal U.S. heavy bomber for the strategic air campaign against Japan because the Pacific distances demanded its capabilities. In Europe, the B-17 had already been integrated into a mature force structure, and the theater’s bases, escorts and targets did not require the same solution.

Calling the B-29 “better” without naming the mission hides this distinction. If the question is which aircraft could carry a very heavy load across a long Pacific route, the B-29 is the clear fit. If the question is which aircraft became the enduring symbol of U.S. daylight bombing over Europe, the answer is the B-17. If the question is which aircraft had the more advanced crew environment, the B-29’s pressurized compartments mark the major difference.
Mission-based verdict
| Reader’s question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Which was intended for longer-range strategic missions? | The B-29. Its design and Pacific deployment addressed missions that could exceed 3,000 miles. |
| Which is most associated with daylight bombing over Europe? | The B-17, particularly through the U.S. Eighth Air Force campaign. |
| Which had a pressurized crew environment? | The B-29, identified by the Smithsonian as the first bomber with pressurized crew compartments. |
| Which had the larger documented operational bomb load in the available summaries? | The B-29 summary reports up to 20,000 pounds on missions, while the B-17E exhibit lists a 4,200-pound maximum bomb load. The figures are not matched test conditions. |
| Which was safer? | Neither can be declared categorically safer from the available design descriptions. Survivability depended on theater defenses, escorts, tactics and mission conditions. |
| Can their speed be compared exactly? | Only the B-17E figures are directly established here: 318 mph maximum and 226 mph cruise. A precise B-29 numerical comparison would require a verified, like-for-like source. |
What to remember
The B-17 Flying Fortress was a 1930s design that became a heavily produced, battle-tested daylight bomber, especially valuable in the European theater. The B-29 Superfortress was a later strategic system built around the Pacific’s larger distances. Its pressurized crew compartments, advanced turret arrangement and long-range payload capability addressed problems the B-17 could not solve on missions over 3,000 miles.
The most accurate comparison is therefore mission-specific: the B-17 was the established European workhorse, while the B-29 was the long-range Pacific instrument. Their published figures come from different variants and operational contexts, so a simple ratio of speed, payload or range would create more precision than the evidence supports.
