Short answer: Azure VM size series move through Current, Extended, End of Life, and Retired stages. Current and Extended sizes remain supported. An End of Life size has a published retirement date and must be migrated before that deadline. A Retired size cannot be used to create, resize into, or run a VM.
For the widely deployed Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3 families, Microsoft lists November 15, 2029 as the retirement date. Capacity-growth restrictions began in July 2026, so waiting until 2029 can leave you unable to add capacity in a subscription or region that no longer accepts the series. Plan, test, and schedule the replacement while the existing workload is still supported.
How Azure VM size lifecycle stages work
Lifecycle status applies to a VM size series rather than to one individual virtual machine. Microsoft’s lifecycle overview defines four stages:

Microsoft’s infrastructure lifecycle guidance says retirement features must be migrated away from before the retirement date to avoid service disruption. Treat the date as a hard operational deadline, not as a suggestion to begin researching alternatives.

Which Azure VM sizes are approaching retirement?
Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3
Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3 are End of Life and are scheduled to retire on November 15, 2029. Existing VMs remain supported until that date, but capacity-growth restrictions began in July 2026. A workload may continue to run while a new VM, scale-set instance, or regional expansion is blocked. Check eligibility for your subscription and region now rather than assuming that the current deployment can be enlarged later.

Dates and regional availability can change. Recheck Microsoft’s current retirement notice immediately before executing a production move, especially when your plan depends on a particular zone, quota, reservation, or replacement SKU.
What happens if you do nothing before the deadline?
After a size is retired, Azure deallocates the VM. It stops incurring compute charges, but it is no longer covered by the Azure SLA or standard support for that retired configuration. Data held only in memory or on the temporary disk is lost during deallocation. Data on managed disks is preserved.

The documented recovery path is to resize the VM to a supported size and restart it. That path restores service only if the replacement is available for the subscription, region, quota, and platform features your workload needs. It is not a substitute for a tested migration: an emergency resize can expose application, networking, extension, boot, or availability-zone incompatibilities at the same time that the old size has become unavailable.
How to plan an Azure VM migration

Inventory every dependent resource
List each VM, virtual machine scale set, and service that uses an End of Life or retiring size. Record the region, availability zone or availability set, operating system, managed disks, network interfaces, extensions, images, GPU or confidential-computing requirements, and any InfiniBand dependency. Include autoscale rules and deployment templates so a later scale-out does not recreate the old SKU.

Read the retirement notice and check eligibility
Confirm the exact retirement date and any interim restrictions. Check whether the candidate replacement is offered in your region and zone, whether your subscription can deploy it, and whether you have sufficient regional vCPU quota. Review reservations or savings-plan treatment, capacity constraints, and availability-set or availability-zone requirements before selecting a SKU.

Choose a Current or Extended replacement
Start with a supported family that matches the workload’s CPU-to-memory ratio and specialized features. For Dv3 or Dsv3, Microsoft identifies Dv5, Dsv5, Ddv5, Ddsv5, Dasv5, and Dadsv5 as families to evaluate. For Ev3 or Esv3, evaluate Ev5, Esv5, Edv5, Edsv5, Easv5, and Eadsv5. These are family-level directions, not a guarantee that every exact size exists in every region; verify the specific SKU before committing.

Resize a representative test workload
Use a non-production VM or a production clone that exercises the same image, disks, extensions, network path, and application startup sequence. Test the proposed resize and restart, then run normal and peak workload tests. Measure application latency and throughput, CPU and memory pressure, disk performance, network bandwidth, connection behavior, and monitoring or backup agents. Confirm that the operating system boots correctly and that every extension reports healthy status.

Validate platform-specific behavior
Check features that can make an apparently equivalent size unsuitable: accelerated networking, specialized storage capabilities, GPU support, confidential-computing requirements, InfiniBand, encryption configuration, zone placement, and scale-set orchestration. Verify that the replacement can join the same availability set or zone strategy and that dependent services can reach it through the existing network controls.

Schedule production migration with rollback
Choose a maintenance window appropriate to the application’s outage tolerance. Take and verify backups, confirm that managed-disk and application data are protected, document the original SKU and configuration, and define the rollback trigger. For a stateful service, coordinate application-level replication or failover rather than relying only on a VM resize. After the change, validate health probes, monitoring, alerts, backups, performance, and user traffic before closing the change.

The family names narrow the search; they do not determine the correct size by themselves. Select the exact vCPU and memory configuration from measured workload demand, then confirm quota, zone support, reservations, expected cost, and availability in the target region.

- Performance: required CPU throughput, memory headroom, storage IOPS and throughput, and network bandwidth under normal and peak load.
- CPU-to-memory ratio: a replacement with similar vCPU count can still be unsuitable if memory capacity changes materially.
- Storage and networking: disk type, temporary-storage behavior, accelerated networking, bandwidth limits, and attachment limits.
- Specialized features: GPU, confidential computing, encryption, InfiniBand, or other features used by the application or its extensions.
- Placement: region, availability zone, availability set, scale-set support, and capacity for new instances.
- Commercial treatment: expected pay-as-you-go cost, reservation eligibility, and savings-plan treatment. Recalculate these for the selected region and exact size.
- Operational risk: image compatibility, driver or extension changes, restart behavior, monitoring coverage, and the ability to roll back.
- Support horizon: prefer a Current family where practical; an Extended family can be acceptable when it meets requirements and has a clear upgrade path.
Testing and validation checklist
A successful resize is more than a VM that reaches a running state. Before production cutover, verify:
- The replacement SKU deploys in the required subscription, region, zone, and quota.
- The operating-system image boots and all managed disks attach with the expected caching and performance settings.
- Application startup, health probes, service discovery, and dependent connections complete normally after restart.
- Network interfaces, routing, security controls, DNS, load-balancer rules, and accelerated networking behave as expected.
- Monitoring, backup, security, and management extensions install or report healthy status.
- Peak-load tests stay within CPU, memory, disk, and network limits with acceptable latency.
- Scale-set models, autoscale rules, infrastructure templates, and disaster-recovery definitions reference the supported family.
- Availability-zone or availability-set placement remains valid and does not reduce resilience.
Protecting data, availability, and recovery options
Retirement deallocation destroys in-memory state and temporary-disk contents, so applications must be able to reconstruct that state from durable storage or replication. Managed-disk data remains available, but preservation of a disk does not guarantee that an application is immediately consistent after an unplanned stop. Use application-aware backups, verify restore procedures, and record dependencies before migration.
The SLA applies to supported configurations, not to a VM left on a Retired size. Moving before the deadline keeps the workload on a supported configuration and gives you time to correct incompatibilities without an emergency outage. Keep the original configuration documented until post-migration monitoring confirms that the replacement is stable.

When to start
For Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3, start inventory and capacity checks now because restrictions began in July 2026 even though retirement is scheduled for November 15, 2029. For HC-series and Msv2 or Mdsv2 isolated medium-memory sizes, the 2027 deadlines leave substantially less time for testing. Any size already retired, including the listed DCas_cc_v5, DCads_cc_v5, ECas_cc_v5, and ECads_cc_v5 families after September 1, 2026, should be treated as an immediate recovery and modernization task rather than a future-planning item.
The practical rule is simple: identify every affected deployment, select a supported replacement that is actually available where you run, test it with production-like load, and complete the change before Microsoft’s retirement date. That sequence protects service continuity, preserves durable data, and avoids discovering quota or compatibility problems after the old size can no longer run.
