Yes. Azure Files standard (HDD) large file shares can use either geo-redundant storage (GRS) or geo-zone-redundant storage (GZRS). GZRS adds availability-zone protection in the primary region; both options asynchronously copy data to a paired secondary region, which cannot serve reads until you fail over. Neither option guarantees that every recent write will be available after a regional outage.
Can Azure Files standard large file shares use geo-redundancy?
Yes, if the shares use standard HDD storage. Azure Files supports GRS and GZRS for standard shares. Premium SSD shares must use locally redundant storage (LRS) or zone-redundant storage (ZRS); they cannot use GRS or GZRS. Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy documentation states that geo-redundancy is supported only for HDD file shares.
Redundancy is set at the storage-account level, so all file shares in an account use the same redundancy setting. If workloads in one account need different redundancy choices, plan on separating them into different accounts. Azure Files also does not provide read-access GRS or GZRS (RA-GRS or RA-GZRS). If an account uses one of those account SKUs, its file shares are treated and billed as GRS or GZRS, without secondary-region read access.

What is the difference between GRS and GZRS for Azure Files?
| Option | Primary-region protection | Secondary-region protection | Secondary reads before failover |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRS | Locally redundant storage (LRS) | Asynchronous replication to the paired region using LRS | No |
| GZRS | Zone-redundant storage (ZRS) across availability zones | Asynchronous replication to the paired region | No |
Both options are designed to protect against a regional disaster by keeping a copy in the paired region. GZRS also protects against a failure affecting a single availability zone in the primary region, because its primary copy is spread across zones. GZRS is available only when the selected primary region supports availability zones and has a paired region. The paired region is selected for the primary region and cannot be changed. Check current regional eligibility and account configuration before choosing; support may change. See Microsoft’s redundancy guidance.

Microsoft documentation lists at least 99.99999999999999% annual durability for both GRS and GZRS. That durability figure describes the likelihood of preserving data over a year; it does not promise that every recent write has reached the secondary region or will be available after an outage. The Azure Files redundancy page does not state a publication year for these figures.
Can I read Azure Files from the secondary region?
No. The secondary copy is inaccessible for reads before failover. GZRS does not make the secondary a readable warm standby, and Azure Files does not support RA-GRS or RA-GZRS access. If you need to resume service in the secondary region, the recovery operation is a failover, not a read-only switch.

How much data could I lose if I fail over Azure Files?
Geo-replication is asynchronous, so recent writes may not have reached the secondary when an unplanned failover occurs. Microsoft estimates replication lag at less than 15 minutes, but explicitly says the estimate is not guaranteed. Azure Files also creates a system snapshot every 15 minutes for geo-redundant shares; after failover, the secondary reflects the latest snapshot available there, which can be older than 15 minutes. Treat the estimate as guidance, not an SLA or a maximum-loss guarantee. See Microsoft’s Azure Files reliability guidance and the redundancy documentation.
The account’s Last Sync Time property can help assess how current the secondary copy is. It is based on the latest system snapshot in the secondary region and the storage service in the account that is furthest behind. It is not updated when there have been no changes. Use it as an indicator when estimating potential data loss, not as proof that all writes made after that time will be lost.

What happens during a regional failover?
- Access is interrupted. Data is inaccessible during the failover operation.
- The secondary becomes primary. After completion, reads and writes resume in the former secondary region.
- Remount clients. File handles and leases are not retained across failover, so clients need to unmount and remount the share.
- Check operations and performance. Ongoing copy operations are aborted and should be retried. Directory queries may have higher latency while synchronization completes. The effective share quota can change to the quota configured when the system snapshot was taken.
These behaviors make recovery planning more than a redundancy-setting decision. Document how applications reconnect, how clients remount, and how interrupted copy operations are retried. Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy documentation and its data protection overview describe the failover effects.

- Failover is blocked when the account has more than 100,000 shares unless Microsoft Support assists.
- Last Sync Time calculation can time out when an account has more than 100 shares. Microsoft recommends keeping fewer than 100 shares per account to avoid this issue.
- Failover can also be blocked if there is no system snapshot in the secondary region.
These limits are another reason to size accounts around operational requirements as well as redundancy. Check the current account state before relying on Last Sync Time or planning a recovery. See Microsoft’s Azure Files redundancy documentation.

Which redundancy option should you choose?
- Choose GRS when regional disaster protection is the requirement and LRS protection in the primary region is sufficient.
- Choose GZRS when you also need primary-region availability-zone resilience and the region is eligible.
- For either option, account for asynchronous replication, no pre-failover secondary reads, service interruption during failover, client remounts, and account-wide configuration.
Base the decision on the failures you need to withstand, regional availability, acceptable recovery-point exposure, and recovery procedures—not on durability percentages alone. For region-specific availability and current implementation details, consult Azure Files redundancy, Azure Files reliability, and the Azure Files data protection overview.
