A 2026 study in Animal Behaviour found that juvenile Mexican axolotls consistently chose the larger of two passable openings—even when the tank was completely dark. Darkness reduced how often they moved, but it did not erase their preference. The result demonstrates useful spatial-size discrimination, not evidence that axolotls count or perform human-like mathematics.
What the axolotl experiment showed
Researchers tested whether axolotls could distinguish between circular passageways of different sizes in a divider. Both holes in each trial were large enough for an animal to pass through, so the choice was not simply “can I fit?” The animals nevertheless selected the larger doorway significantly more often.
The experiment involved 24 juvenile axolotls approximately seven months old. Testing ran for 18 days. Six combinations of hole sizes were used, with each combination presented for three days. To prevent a side bias from explaining the result, the divider was turned around halfway through each test, reversing the left-right positions of the openings.

Can axolotls see in the dark?
This study does not show that axolotls see normally without light. Instead, it shows that they can make the larger-opening choice when vision is unavailable. In complete darkness, the axolotls crossed the divider less often overall, indicating lower activity. Whenever they did make a crossing, however, their preference for the larger opening remained as strong as it was during daytime testing.
That distinction matters. Darkness changed the animals’ willingness or opportunity to move, but it did not eliminate the size-discrimination behavior. The findings therefore support a nonvisual way of assessing the route ahead, rather than proving a special form of night vision.

- Easy to Clean: The double-sided glazed surface is smooth and easy to clean. Simply rinse with water and wipe dry afterward
How could they navigate without vision?
The lateral line is a leading hypothesis
Axolotls possess a lateral-line system: rows of mechanoreceptive organs called neuromasts on the head and trunk. These sensors respond to water movement and small pressure changes. A nearby opening can alter how water flows around an animal, potentially providing information about the shape or clearance of a gap.
Researchers Oxána Bánszegi of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Péter Szenczi of the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz told ScienceAlert that it was initially surprising the animals could distinguish openings in complete darkness. They proposed that vision is not always essential when environmental or taxonomic conditions limit it, with the lateral line as a plausible source of nonvisual information.

What the experiment did not establish
The study was not designed to isolate the sensory mechanism. It did not block or disable the lateral line, compare animals with altered neuromasts, or measure the water-flow cues at each hole. Consequently, lateral-line involvement remains a biologically reasonable hypothesis, not a demonstrated cause. Other nonvisual cues were not experimentally ruled out.
Does this mean axolotls understand size or quantity?
The safest interpretation is that axolotls can discriminate between spatially different openings and use that information when choosing a route. A larger opening may offer more clearance and reduce the risk of contact, making the preference ecologically useful for moving through vegetation, shelter or other confined spaces.

That is different from showing that an axolotl represents abstract quantity. The animals were not asked to compare piles of objects, remember numerical values or perform operations. A choice between two doorways is a spatial-navigation task, so the result should not be presented as proof that axolotls count.
The researchers themselves cautioned against treating “intelligence” as a single general score. They said behavior should be evaluated in light of an animal’s ecological needs, while noting that the species’ behavior remains incompletely understood. Their observation was direct: “We quickly saw that they preferred larger openings for crossing.”

What was controlled in the study?
| Feature | Study detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Animals | 24 juvenile axolotls, about seven months old | Provides a defined age group rather than a claim about every life stage |
| Analyzed sample | 22 animals active enough for analysis | Two animals were excluded from behavioral analysis because they did not provide enough activity |
| Task | Choose between two circular openings, both passable | Tests preference for opening size, not basic ability to fit through |
| Schedule | Six hole-size combinations over 18 days; three days per combination | Repeated presentations reduce the chance that one exposure explains the result |
| Position control | Divider turned around midway through each test | Checks that a left-right preference is not driving the choice |
| Lighting comparison | Normal light versus complete darkness | Separates the effect of illumination on movement from the preference itself |
| Outcome | All 22 analyzed animals significantly preferred the larger opening | Shows a consistent pattern within this tested group |
What the finding means for axolotl behavior
The result adds evidence that axolotls can make behaviorally useful spatial judgments using more than vision. Their reduced nighttime activity is also informative: an animal may move less in darkness while still retaining the ability to evaluate a route when movement occurs.
For biology, the study raises a testable question about how amphibians combine water-flow sensing with other senses. Future experiments could manipulate lateral-line function, measure flow and pressure around openings, or compare the same animals under controlled visual and hydrodynamic cues. Those tests would be needed to identify the mechanism rather than infer it.
Quick Recap
What you should—and should not—conclude
- Supported: Juvenile axolotls preferred the larger of two openings that were both large enough to pass through.
- Supported: The preference persisted in complete darkness.
- Supported: Darkness reduced overall crossings.
- Plausible but unproven: The lateral line helped detect differences in water movement or pressure near the openings.
- Not shown: That axolotls count, perform arithmetic or possess human-like mathematical concepts.
- Not established: That every axolotl, age group or wild population will behave identically; this experiment used a specific juvenile sample.
