VPC peering works well for a small number of direct connections, but it does not let one VPC pass traffic to another. As more VPCs need to communicate, every required pair needs its own peering connection and route configuration. That makes peering a poor fit when you need transitive routing, centralized control, or frequent network growth—not an inevitable dead end for every AWS environment.
What makes VPC peering non-transitive?
A VPC peering connection provides private connectivity between two VPCs. If VPC A is peered with VPC B, and VPC B is peered with VPC C, A cannot use B as a router to reach C. Each VPC pair that must communicate needs a direct peering connection. AWS explains this constraint in its VPC peering documentation.
Peering also does not turn a peer into an edge gateway for your traffic. You cannot route through a peer’s internet gateway, NAT device, VPN connection, Direct Connect connection, or gateway endpoint. Both VPCs need routes for the connection, and their IPv4 and IPv6 CIDR blocks must not overlap.
How quickly does a peering mesh grow?
In a full mesh, every VPC must connect directly to every other VPC. For n VPCs, that means n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 pairwise connections. For example, a full mesh of 10 VPCs requires 45 peerings; 20 requires 190. These are arithmetic examples, not AWS service limits.

AWS’s multi-VPC whitepaper describes meshes among tens or hundreds of VPCs as potentially involving hundreds or thousands of peerings. That is a scale illustration, not a measured universal result. The practical burden is not only the connection count: teams must keep the relevant routes configured and maintained across the participating VPCs.
When should you keep peering?
Do not replace peering just because your VPC count has increased. It can remain a clean choice when communication is direct, the set of connections is limited and stable, CIDRs do not overlap, and your team can manage routes on both sides of each connection.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
- Keep peering for a small set of known VPC pairs that need direct communication.
- Reconsider the design when teams need VPCs to reach one another through a shared network, when onboarding creates repeated connection work, or when routing and segmentation need central control.
- Check inter-Region and address needs alongside transitivity. AWS’s comparison of network connectivity options evaluates direction, protocols, scalability, CIDR overlap, inter-Region connectivity, transitivity, and implementation complexity.
Which AWS connectivity option fits?
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| VPC peering | Direct communication between a limited number of VPC pairs | Non-transitive; each required pair needs its own connection and route configuration. CIDR ranges cannot overlap. |
| Transit Gateway | A regional hub for VPCs and other networks that need transitive routing and centrally managed route tables | Reduces the need for pairwise links, but AWS describes this integration as typically more expensive than direct peering. Model attachment and data-transfer costs. |
| AWS PrivateLink | Consumer access to a specific provider service rather than general network-to-network reachability | Service-oriented, with different directionality and protocol behavior; it is not a substitute for transitive routing. |
| AWS Cloud WAN | Broader managed networks that need policy-based segmentation and route exchange | Evaluate its broader scope and cost against the actual network requirement. Cloud WAN can peer with Transit Gateway in the same Region. |
When does Transit Gateway make sense?
Transit Gateway provides a hub to which VPCs and other networks can attach. Its route tables control how traffic moves among attachments, enabling transitive connectivity without creating a direct peering connection for every communicating pair. AWS Prescriptive Guidance recommends Transit Gateway for managing multi-VPC networks at scale.

It is worth evaluating when multiple VPCs need transitive routes, shared access to on-premises networks, or centralized route management and segmentation. It is not automatically the right choice for two VPCs with a straightforward direct connection. Compare the operating model and expected attachment and data-transfer costs before migrating; AWS says the hub approach is typically more expensive than direct peering in the described integration architecture.

AWS’s quota documentation, accessed in 2026, lists a default quota of 5,000 Transit Gateway attachments and 10,000 combined dynamic and static routes across all route tables for one gateway. The attachment quota is adjustable; AWS advises contacting a Solutions Architect or Technical Account Manager for assistance above the route figure. These are volatile defaults, not design guarantees: verify the current quota for your account and Region before relying on them.

Use PrivateLink for access to a service
If a consumer needs access to a particular provider service, rather than broad reachability to the provider’s network, PrivateLink may fit better than peering. AWS’s connectivity comparison describes it as a service-oriented option and lists TCP support and CIDR-overlap support in that integration context. Check the current service documentation against your provider, consumer, and protocol requirements.

Consider Cloud WAN for broader policy-based networking
Cloud WAN addresses broader networks that need policy and segmentation across multiple networks. AWS documents same-Region peering between Cloud WAN and Transit Gateway, with dynamic BGP route exchange and selective propagation through segments and route tables. That is a different scope from linking a small number of VPC pairs; evaluate it against the network policy and regional requirements you actually have.

How to choose without overbuilding
- List who must reach whom. Separate direct VPC-pair communication from requirements for one network to transit through another, and identify shared services or on-premises networks.
- Check address compatibility. For peering, confirm that IPv4 and IPv6 CIDR blocks do not overlap and that routes exist on both sides.
- Set the control model. Decide whether per-VPC route ownership remains manageable or whether centralized route tables and segmentation are needed.
- Choose the matching connectivity model. Use peering for limited direct links, Transit Gateway for a transitive hub, PrivateLink for controlled service access, and Cloud WAN when broader policy-based networking is required.
- Validate operational and cost assumptions. Check current regional availability, quotas, route requirements, and service pricing before implementation; do not treat quota defaults as promises of capacity.
