Neither S3 Tables nor S3 Express One Zone is a universal low-cost winner: they solve different storage problems. Evaluate S3 Tables when you need managed Apache Iceberg tables for analytics; evaluate S3 Express One Zone when you need low-latency object access and can accept data placement in a single Availability Zone. Compare current rates for your Region and workload—including requests, data transfer, maintenance and recovery design—before deciding.

Are S3 Tables and S3 Express One Zone alternatives?

Not in the usual sense. S3 Tables is managed table storage for tabular analytics data. It stores tables in Apache Iceberg format and works with compatible query engines such as Athena, Redshift and Spark. AWS manages table maintenance, including compaction and snapshot management.

S3 Express One Zone is an S3 storage class for frequently accessed, latency-sensitive object data. It uses directory buckets in a selected Availability Zone and is designed for consistent single-digit-millisecond access. It is not an Iceberg table service.

The right comparison is therefore about the whole workload, not just the storage rate: does the workload need managed Iceberg tables, or low-latency access to objects? If both patterns are present, assess them as separate workload components rather than forcing one service to stand in for the other.

How do their costs and trade-offs differ?

Comparison S3 Tables S3 Express One Zone
Designed for Tabular analytics data stored as Apache Iceberg tables. Frequently accessed object data for latency-sensitive applications.
Storage organization Table buckets and managed table resources. Directory buckets in a selected Availability Zone.
Service-managed operation Table maintenance such as compaction and snapshot management. Low-latency object access; compute and storage can be placed in the same AZ.
Cost items to model Storage, table requests, compaction and other maintenance, and the query workload. Storage, object request mix, applicable transfer or retrieval charges, and the AZ and recovery design.
Resilience consideration AWS describes table buckets as having the durability, availability and scalability of other S3 bucket types; check the details for the chosen configuration. Redundant across devices within one AZ, but not placed across multiple AZs.
Decision question Does managed Iceberg storage and maintenance fit the analytics workflow? Does low-latency object access justify the single-AZ placement and its recovery requirements?

There is no published apples-to-apples total-cost statistic establishing that one service is cheaper. A storage-price comparison alone also leaves out request volume, transfer, table maintenance, query behavior and the cost of meeting the workload’s resilience target.

What resilience trade-off comes with Express One Zone?

AWS describes Express One Zone as redundantly storing data across multiple devices inside the selected Availability Zone, with a design availability figure of 99.95% within that AZ. That figure is not a promise of multi-AZ placement or availability. A design that requires recovery from an AZ-level disruption must account for its additional architecture and cost rather than comparing Express One Zone’s rate with a multi-AZ design as if they offered the same resilience.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Availability can also depend on the planned Region and AZ. In an announcement dated September 17, 2026, AWS said Express One Zone had expanded into seven additional Regions, bringing the announced total to 15 at that time. Confirm current regional and AZ support for the intended deployment.

How should you build a workload-based cost comparison?

  1. Define the outcome. Identify whether the data is tabular analytics data that needs Iceberg semantics and compatible query-engine integration, or object data that primarily needs low-latency GET and PUT access.
  2. Set the deployment constraints. Specify the target Region, AZ placement, availability and recovery requirements, and whether compute can run alongside the stored data in one AZ.
  3. Measure the workload. Estimate stored GB-months, request counts by type, bytes transferred or retrieved, and—for tables—query patterns and maintenance activity. Use representative activity over time, not only an initial snapshot.
  4. Price each viable design with current rates. Use AWS’s live S3 pricing information for the target Region and include the relevant storage, request, transfer or retrieval, table-maintenance and other applicable charges. Rates are Region- and usage-specific and may change.
  5. Compare equivalent service levels. Include the architecture needed to meet each option’s availability and recovery requirements. Do not treat a single-AZ design as equivalent to a multi-AZ one without accounting for that difference.
  6. Revisit the estimate as usage changes. Object counts, request mix, bytes moved, query selectivity and compaction activity can all change the cost profile. Recalculate when those assumptions change.

How do AWS’s announced price reductions fit into the decision?

The announcements below are dated reductions against earlier prices, not current absolute rates or a like-for-like comparison between the services. AWS’s live Region-specific pricing is the relevant rate card for an estimate.

Service and announcement Announced change How to interpret it
S3 Express One Zone, AWS announcement in April 2025 Starting April 10, 2025, AWS announced a 31% storage-price reduction, a 55% reduction in PUT request prices and an 85% reduction in GET request prices. AWS also reported a 60% reduction in per-GB upload and retrieval charges and a change to charge all bytes. These are changes from prior charges, not a statement of today’s rate in a particular Region.
S3 Tables compaction, AWS announcement on July 15, 2025 Effective July 1, 2025, AWS announced compaction processing fee reductions of up to 90%. Per-object pricing fell 50%; per-byte processing prices fell 90% for binpack and 80% for sort and z-order compaction. The reductions concern compaction fees, not the total cost of an S3 Tables workload.

What S3 Tables maintenance should you include?

Compaction is enabled by default and can incur additional cost. AWS says sort and z-order compaction may cost more than binpack. Maintenance settings can be adjusted, but disabling a feature also changes the work AWS performs for the table. Include the selected maintenance behavior in the estimate rather than treating managed table storage as storage-only.
