AWS announced an enhanced Amazon EventBridge Custom event bus on September 24, 2026. It is a separate resource designed to give teams a shared event backbone across AWS accounts, with subscriber-specific filtering and delivery, retained events and replay, optional ordered delivery, and a new ingress/egress pricing model. Existing custom buses were renamed Custom event bus – Classic; they were not automatically replaced.
What changed in EventBridge?
The enhanced Custom event bus changes how consumers are attached to a bus. With the new resource, publishers send events to a shared bus and consumers create Subscriber resources to define what they receive and how it is delivered. AWS says the bus can be shared across accounts using AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM), making it suitable for organizations that want a central event backbone rather than separate event routes managed by each team.
The prior custom-bus experience is now called Custom event bus – Classic. Existing buses and their APIs continue to work. The new resource is not an automatic upgrade: AWS recommends it for new applications and provides migration guidance for existing workloads, but moving an application may require changes to its publishing and consumption configuration. AWS’s guide to the two bus types explains the distinction.

How does the enhanced bus differ from Custom event bus – Classic?
| Area | Enhanced Custom event bus | Custom event bus – Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer setup | Consumers create Subscriber resources, which package filtering and delivery configuration. | Rules and targets are configured on the bus. |
| Sharing across accounts | AWS describes centralized sharing through RAM. | Cross-account use is possible through resource policies and routing or forwarding arrangements; it is not exclusive to the enhanced bus. |
| Retention and replay | Configurable event retention and subscriber start positions support late consumers and recovery. | The launch materials do not describe the enhanced bus’s retention and replay model as a Classic feature. |
| Ordering and deduplication | Subscribers can opt into event-group ordering; publishers can use content-based deduplication. | The launch materials do not describe these enhanced-bus capabilities as Classic features. |
| Pricing model | Publishers pay for ingested events and subscribers for delivered events, according to AWS. | The prior per-event model. |
How do subscribers filter and receive events?
A Subscriber resource brings together a consumer’s event filter and delivery settings, including target configuration, retries, and a dead-letter destination. That puts consumption behavior with the subscriber rather than requiring the publisher to define a separate bus rule for each consumer. Subscribers can also choose a start position in retained events, which AWS describes as useful when onboarding a consumer or recovering from an interruption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS says the default quota is 10,000 Subscribers per bus. This is a default quota, not a hard ceiling; customers can request an increase. Retention is configurable from 1 to 365 days.
How does ordered delivery work?
A publisher can include an EventGroupId with an event. A subscriber that opts into ordered delivery receives events in that group in sequence. Ordering is therefore a consumer choice and applies within an event group; it is not a blanket promise that every subscriber processes every event in one global order. Other subscribers can consume asynchronously.

What do retention, replay, and deduplication provide?
Retention and replay
Configurable retention lets a subscriber start from retained events rather than only receiving events published after it was created. AWS presents replay and start positions as ways to onboard consumers and recover after processing problems. Retention lasts between 1 and 365 days, based on the configured setting.

AWS describes content-based deduplication that can collapse matching publish retries within a five-minute window. Its launch blog also discusses synchronous invocation for targets such as Lambda, which can let a publisher confirm processing before acknowledging an event. These features do not establish exactly-once processing across arbitrary targets, retries beyond the described scope, or downstream application systems.

Which event formats and publishing APIs are supported?
AWS says the enhanced bus accepts JSON, Avro, Protobuf, and raw bytes through PutRawEvents. Publishers can also use PutEvents, which constructs an EventBridge JSON envelope from source, detail type, and detail fields. PutRawEvents publishes a raw payload with a chosen format. Subscribers can apply JSONata transformations, according to AWS’s launch announcement.
The publishing guide says each request can batch 1–100 entries and returns a result for each entry. Publishers should inspect each entry’s result; an HTTP-level response alone does not tell whether every event in a batch was accepted. See AWS’s publishing guide for the API behavior.

How is the new bus priced?
AWS describes the enhanced bus as replacing the previous per-event model with throughput pricing across ingress and egress: publishers pay for events ingested, and subscribers pay for events delivered. AWS says this can improve economics at scale and let organizations allocate costs between publishers and subscribers. Those are AWS’s characterizations, not evidence of savings for a particular workload.
