Use an IAM role with temporary credentials for an AI agent whenever its runtime can use a role or a supported federation method. AWS’s workload guidance explicitly says to require temporary credentials with IAM roles. A long-lived IAM-user access key is an exception for a workload or client that cannot use those mechanisms, not the default for an agent. The choice affects how credentials are delivered, how long they remain useful after exposure, and how much lifecycle work your team must perform.

What the comparison means for an AI agent

An AI agent that calls AWS APIs is an application or workload from an identity-management perspective. The AWS pages relevant to this decision discuss workloads, applications, clients and federated principals generally; they do not establish a separate credential policy written specifically for AI agents. Applying the workload guidance to an agent is appropriate when the agent process makes AWS API requests, but it would be inaccurate to claim that AWS has published a distinct “AI-agent credential” rule.

The practical question is how the agent obtains permission to call AWS. With a role, the agent’s runtime or a federated identity obtains a temporary role session. With a long-lived credential, an IAM user’s access key and secret access key are configured for the client or workload and remain usable until someone disables or deletes them.

AWS’s published recommendation is direct: Require workloads to use temporary credentials with IAM roles to access AWS. See Security best practices in IAM.

How an IAM role supplies credentials

A role is an assumable identity

An IAM role is not a permanent key pair. It is an AWS identity with permissions and a trust relationship. A principal—such as an AWS compute service, a federated user or an external workload using a supported integration—assumes the role and receives credentials for a role session. The role’s permissions determine what the session can do, while its trust policy determines who or what may assume it. AWS describes this model in IAM roles.

Temporary credentials contain three parts

A temporary session includes an access key ID, a secret access key and a session token. Requests made with temporary credentials must include the session token; sending only the two key values is incomplete. AWS explains the request behavior in Use temporary credentials with AWS resources.

The credentials have a finite lifetime. AWS states that temporary credentials can last from minutes to hours, depending on the mechanism and configuration, and become unusable after they expire. The agent therefore needs a credential-delivery path that can refresh or reacquire sessions before the current one ends.

Why this removes a permanent secret from the agent package

When an AWS compute service delivers role credentials to the workload, the application can use the AWS SDK credential chain without embedding an IAM-user key in source code, an image or a deployment variable. The role is still an identity with real authority, so temporary does not mean unrestricted: an over-permissioned role can let a compromised agent perform damaging actions during its valid session.

How long-lived IAM-user credentials differ

They do not expire on their own

An IAM-user access key is intended for a user or a client that needs programmatic access. Unlike a temporary session, an IAM-user or root-user credential does not expire automatically. It remains valid until an administrator disables, deletes or otherwise revokes it. The distinction is documented in AWS security credentials.

If a long-lived key is exposed in a repository, log, diagnostic trace, container image or agent prompt context, the exposure window can continue until the key is found and revoked. The key’s persistence makes storage, monitoring, rotation and incident response part of the application’s ongoing operation rather than a one-time deployment task.

Static keys may still be a constrained option

AWS does not say that every workload can use a role. Its guidance identifies workloads that cannot use IAM roles and third-party AWS clients that lack the relevant identity-federation support as cases that may require IAM-user long-term access keys. Treat those examples as constraints to investigate. First check whether the runtime, SDK, client or hosting environment supports a role, AWS Security Token Service (STS) federation or another documented temporary-credential path.

Role versus long-lived key: the operational differences

Decision axis IAM role with temporary credentials Long-lived IAM-user access key
How the agent obtains credentials The workload or federated principal assumes a role or receives credentials through an AWS integration. An IAM-user access key is created and configured for the client or workload.
Lifetime Short-lived; the session expires according to the STS mechanism and configuration. No automatic expiry; it remains valid until manually revoked.
Distribution burden Can avoid distributing a permanent key when an AWS role or supported federation method is available. Requires secure storage, lifecycle management, updates when needed and a revocation process.
Best operational fit AWS compute and supported external-workload federation patterns. Workloads or third-party clients that cannot use roles or supported federation.
Primary design checks Role trust, permission scope, identity source, credential-delivery path and renewal behavior. Storage location, exposure surface, access scope, rotation, last-used review and revocation.

The comparison does not mean that a role is automatically safe or that a static key is automatically unusable. It identifies where the security and operational burden sits. A role places more emphasis on trust conditions, session delivery and renewal; a long-lived key places more emphasis on secret protection and manual lifecycle control.

Choosing a credential path for an agent running on AWS

Use the workload role supplied by the AWS runtime

For an agent hosted on AWS compute, start with the service’s supported workload-identity mechanism. Attach or associate a role with the compute workload, grant only the permissions the agent needs, and allow the AWS SDK to obtain temporary credentials through the runtime’s delivery path. This design avoids placing an IAM-user key in the agent’s code or deployment bundle.

Before launch, verify four things:

  • The role trust relationship names only the intended AWS service or principal.
  • The permissions policy covers the agent’s required API actions and resources, rather than broad account-wide access.
  • The runtime actually exposes temporary credentials to the process in the way the selected SDK or client expects.
  • The agent can refresh or reacquire credentials before the session expires, including after a restart or deployment.

Separate the agent’s identity from the user who deploys it

A deployment administrator may have permission to create or update the role, but the running agent should operate under its own workload identity. This separation makes the agent’s API activity attributable to the role session and prevents the application from inheriting a human administrator’s long-lived credentials.

Check renewal behavior under normal and failure conditions

Temporary credentials are useful only while they are valid. Test the agent’s behavior when a session is close to expiry, when a refresh request fails temporarily and when the process restarts. A robust implementation reacquires credentials through the configured role path rather than requiring an operator to paste a new key into the application.

Choosing a credential path for an agent outside AWS

An external agent does not automatically need a static IAM-user key. AWS documents several ways for workloads outside AWS to obtain temporary credentials; the right choice depends on the environment’s identity and certificate capabilities.

IAM Roles Anywhere with X.509 certificates

A workload that can use X.509 certificates can use IAM Roles Anywhere to obtain temporary credentials for an AWS role. The certificate-backed identity participates in the role’s trust arrangement, and the resulting session is temporary rather than a permanent IAM-user key. AWS lists this as an external-workload option in Security best practices in IAM.

STS federation with SAML or web identity

Another external pattern uses AWS STS federation with SAML or web identity. A federated principal obtains a role session instead of distributing an IAM-user secret to the agent. The identity provider, trust relationship and token-delivery details must be configured so that only the intended workload can obtain the role.

Integrations for supported external compute environments

AWS also documents integrations for certain external compute environments. Identify the environment first, then select the credential-delivery method it supports. Do not assume that because the agent runs outside an AWS data center, a static key is the only practical choice.

How to design the role for an AI agent

Limit permissions to the agent’s actual job

Define the AWS API operations and resources the agent must use, then grant those permissions to its role. An agent that reads objects from one storage location should not receive unrestricted write, deletion or account-administration permissions merely because those permissions make integration easier. Permission scope is the control that limits what the agent can do if its prompt, tools or process are compromised.

Constrain the trust relationship

The role’s trust policy should identify the intended service, account, federated identity or certificate-backed workload. A role with narrow permissions but an overly broad trust relationship can still be assumed by unintended principals. Review both sides together: who may obtain the session and what that session may do.

Account for session duration and renewal

Temporary credentials have configured duration limits. Decide how the agent behaves when a session expires during a long-running task, and ensure its SDK or credential provider can refresh the session. If a task cannot be safely resumed after an authorization failure, design an explicit retry or checkpoint path rather than silently repeating side effects.

Keep credentials out of agent-visible content

Do not place access keys or session values in system prompts, tool descriptions, retrieved documents, chat transcripts, source repositories or ordinary application logs. The agent should receive AWS authorization through its runtime identity, not by asking a model to preserve or reproduce secrets. Temporary credentials reduce the lifetime of an exposed value, but they do not make disclosure harmless while the session remains valid.

When a long-lived key is genuinely unavoidable

Prove the constraint first

Document why the client cannot use an AWS role, STS federation, IAM Roles Anywhere or another supported credential-delivery option. A legacy third-party client with no federation support is a materially different case from an agent whose integration simply has not been configured yet.

Store the key outside source and images

AWS recommends temporary credentials wherever possible. If a long-term key is necessary, keep it out of application source, repositories and container images. Use the secret-storage and configuration controls available in the hosting environment, restrict who can retrieve it, and prevent it from appearing in logs or diagnostic output.

Minimize its permissions

Create the narrowest IAM-user policy that satisfies the client’s required operations. Do not use a root-user key for an application. Separate keys by workload or environment so that revoking one credential does not unnecessarily interrupt unrelated systems.

Plan updates and revocation before deployment

Long-lived credentials require an explicit rotation and incident-response procedure. AWS’s programmatic-access guidance discusses updating keys and reviewing access-last-used information in Programmatic access with AWS security credentials. Set an owner, a review interval and a tested replacement process. If the key may have been exposed, disable or delete it promptly and investigate the activity associated with it.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the runtime. Determine whether the agent runs on AWS compute, in another cloud, on-premises, at an edge location or inside a third-party client.
  2. List supported identity mechanisms. Check for an attached workload role, IAM Roles Anywhere capability, SAML or web-identity federation, or another AWS-supported integration.
  3. Model the agent’s permissions. Write down the API actions and resources required for each tool or workflow, then create a role policy limited to that set.
  4. Configure trust and delivery. Restrict who can assume the role and verify how the runtime or federation provider delivers the temporary session to the SDK.
  5. Test expiry and recovery. Confirm that the agent refreshes or reacquires credentials and handles failed renewal without unsafe duplicate actions.
  6. Escalate to a static key only for a documented incompatibility. If no supported temporary path works, apply strict storage, scope, monitoring, update and revocation controls to the IAM-user key.

Common mistakes and their fixes

“Temporary” is treated as a complete security boundary

Failure: The role grants broad permissions because the session will eventually expire.

Fix: Reduce the role’s permissions and narrow its trust relationship. Expiry limits duration; it does not undo actions already performed or prevent misuse during the valid session.

The session token is omitted

Failure: An integration sends an access key ID and secret access key but drops the session token.

Fix: Pass all three temporary-credential components. AWS requires the session token with requests that use temporary credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agent fails when credentials expire

Failure: A long-running process works at startup and then begins returning authorization errors hours later.

Fix: Use a supported credential provider that refreshes or reacquires the role session, and test renewal before production workloads depend on it.

A static key is copied into a repository

Failure: The key becomes available through source history, forks, build artifacts or logs.

Fix: Revoke the exposed key, investigate its use, remove it from distribution points and move the workload to a role or federation path if possible. If a static key remains necessary, keep it in controlled secret storage and rotate it through a rehearsed procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A broad trust policy defeats a narrow permission policy

Failure: An unintended principal can assume the role even though the role’s actions are limited.

Fix: Review the trust relationship independently from the permissions policy and restrict the trusted service, account, identity provider or certificate-backed workload.

What AWS guidance does—and does not—establish

AWS establishes a general preference for temporary credentials with IAM roles for workloads, explains the role and session model, and identifies supported paths for AWS and external environments. It also recognizes limited cases in which IAM-user long-term keys may be required. The material does not provide an AI-agent-specific benchmark, a universal session duration for every integration or a guarantee that temporary credentials prevent compromise.

For an AI agent, the defensible interpretation is therefore straightforward: treat the agent as a workload, use a role and temporary credentials whenever its runtime supports them, and reserve long-lived IAM-user keys for a verified compatibility constraint. Then design the trust policy, permission scope, delivery path and renewal behavior as carefully as the agent’s application code.
