Neither AWS EC2 nor DigitalOcean Droplets is the best cloud for every workload in 2026. EC2 is worth considering when its range of instance types, AWS integrations, or purchasing models match your needs. DigitalOcean is a candidate for Linux virtual machines when its available plans, services, regions, and billing model fit. Compare equivalent configurations in the region you need, then weigh the full bill and the work required to operate each option.
What “best” means for your workload
A cloud provider’s advertised entry price or broad service catalog cannot tell you how well it fits a particular deployment. The decision depends on the compute resources you need, where your users and data are, which services you want managed, how predictable your usage is, and what your team can operate.
The available provider comparisons are published by DigitalOcean. Their provider lists and “best for” labels can help identify candidates, but they are not independent proof of a winner. The available material also does not establish a matched regional cost or performance winner, or independent reliability results.
Recommended Free Tools
- Workload fit: Match CPU architecture and capacity, memory, disk needs, utilization pattern, and operating system.
- All-in cost: Include compute, storage, data transfer, managed services, support, and the engineering work needed to run what is not managed for you.
- Location: Check the required region, latency, and data-residency constraints.
- Operations: Consider availability requirements, integrations, compliance, support, and your team’s infrastructure experience.
- Flexibility: Decide whether you can commit to steady usage, tolerate interruptions, or need to move workloads between providers.
How the main options differ
| Option | Evidence-supported position | What to check for your workload |
|---|---|---|
| AWS EC2 | Offers multiple instance families and sizes, networking options, and purchasing models. | Check whether the required EC2 configuration and AWS integrations suit the workload. Model the full bill and, if considering Spot, account for interruptions. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Linux virtual machines with bundled CPU and resource-priced plan types. DigitalOcean’s materials describe a more streamlined cloud portfolio. | Check the plan type available in your target data center and whether the platform’s services and regions meet your requirements. Add storage, transfer, and related service costs. |
| Azure and Google Compute Engine | Included among the alternative providers in DigitalOcean-published comparison material. | Compare matched VM configurations, existing cloud commitments, identity and hybrid needs, regions, and any analytics or AI services you require. The available material does not establish which will be cheaper or faster for your workload. |
| Vultr, Hetzner, Akamai Cloud/Linode, and Scaleway | Identified as additional cloud compute options in the provider landscape. | Compare regions, VM types, support, networking, managed products, transfer limits, and the infrastructure your team must operate. |
| Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, IBM Cloud, OVHcloud, and Alibaba Cloud | Included in the broader provider landscape. | Assess them against specific needs such as existing vendor ecosystem, geography, compliance, hardware, and support. The available comparisons do not rank them independently. |
Understand the billing models before comparing prices
AWS EC2 purchasing options
AWS On-Demand is pay-as-you-go compute with no long-term commitment. AWS documentation says On-Demand Instances are billed by the second, with a 60-second minimum. AWS describes this model as suited to short-term or irregular workloads that cannot be interrupted. See the Amazon EC2 On-Demand documentation for the billing details.

AWS also advertises potential discounts of up to 72% for Savings Plans and up to 90% for Spot compared with On-Demand prices. These are AWS-stated maximums, not guaranteed savings for a particular workload. Savings Plans involve a usage commitment; Spot uses spare capacity and can be interrupted. Consider them only if the commitment or interruption risk fits your application.
DigitalOcean Droplet billing
DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation, last verified August 25, 2026, distinguishes bundled CPU Droplets from v5 resource-priced Droplets. For v5, the selected vCPU, memory, and boot-disk rates are combined into one invoice line; billing is per second with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum, and there is no monthly usage cap. An example v5 configuration with 8 shared vCPUs, 16 GiB of memory, and a 30 GiB boot disk is listed at $0.1953 per hour. That is a configuration example, not a matched comparison with another provider.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
The same DigitalOcean documentation says bundled-plan CPU Droplets have a 672-hour (28-day) monthly usage cap and continue to incur charges while powered off until they are destroyed. Verify which type is available and appropriate in the data center you plan to use; powered-off status does not have the same billing implication across these plan types.
Why advertised starting prices are not a fair comparison
A “from” price can describe a particular configuration, region, and point in time. It does not show what an equivalent deployment will cost, and the comparison sources note that prices can vary by region and workload. Do not infer that a provider is cheapest from entry prices alone.

For a useful estimate, use current official calculators and price pages and keep the assumptions identical. Record the date and configuration for each quote. Include expected uptime and utilization as well as the resources and services the application actually needs.
Build a like-for-like shortlist
- Describe a representative workload. Write down CPU architecture, sustained and burst utilization, memory, disk capacity and performance, inbound and outbound traffic, uptime target, operating system, expected growth, and the regions you need.
- List dependencies and constraints. Note any managed database, Kubernetes, or other managed-service needs, as well as compliance and data-residency requirements.
- Choose plausible candidates. Start with EC2 and Droplets if those match your requirements; add alternatives only when their regions, services, ecosystem, or operational model make them credible choices.
- Price equivalent deployments. Use each provider’s current official calculator or price page for the same region and comparable CPU, memory, storage, traffic, and uptime assumptions. Record the quote date and configuration.
- Add costs beyond the VM. Account for transfer, storage, managed services, support, and the engineering effort required to operate services that are not managed.
- Compare the trade-offs. Put all-in monthly cost beside required engineering work, location and latency, service depth, and portability. Prefer the option that meets your requirements with an acceptable total cost and operating burden.
Which provider should you choose?
Choose EC2 when its range or purchasing models matter
EC2 is a logical candidate when you need a particular instance configuration, AWS integrations, or flexibility among On-Demand, commitment-based Savings Plans, and interruptible Spot capacity. The right purchasing model depends on how steady the workload is and whether it can tolerate interruptions.

Choose DigitalOcean Droplets when its VM and billing model fit
Droplets are worth considering for Linux VM workloads when the available plan types, regions, and DigitalOcean services cover the deployment. Check the billing behavior for the specific plan: bundled CPU and v5 resource-priced Droplets have different pricing structures and usage rules.
Screen other providers against a concrete requirement
Azure, Google Compute Engine, Vultr, Hetzner, Akamai Cloud/Linode, Scaleway, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, IBM Cloud, OVHcloud, and Alibaba Cloud are candidates to investigate, not a ranked list. Compare them only after identifying the reason they may fit—for example, a required geography, an existing ecosystem, or a particular support or compliance need—and verify the specific configuration and terms directly.
