Choose Amazon Bedrock when you are building a generative-AI application or agent around managed foundation models, prompts, retrieval, and application APIs, and you want to minimize infrastructure work. Choose Amazon SageMaker AI when you need to develop, train, customize, or deploy models—including predictive and classical-ML models—with more control over compute, serving, cost, throughput, or latency. Many teams use both: prototype and assemble the application in Bedrock, then add SageMaker AI customization or controlled deployment when the workload requires it.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on the model work your team must own, the operational controls it needs, and the traffic and cost profile of the finished system.
Bedrock and SageMaker AI solve different parts of the AI lifecycle
Amazon Bedrock is positioned as a fully managed, serverless platform for building and operating generative-AI applications and agents at production scale. It provides API access to foundation models and application-oriented capabilities such as Knowledge Bases, Guardrails, agents, workflows, prompt management, and data processing. The service is designed so a team can concentrate on prompts, retrieval, orchestration, safety policies, and product behavior rather than provisioning model-serving infrastructure.
Amazon SageMaker AI is a managed environment for the broader AI lifecycle: data preparation, model development, training, customization, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. It supports generative AI as well as predictive and classical machine learning. Its managed training jobs, inference options, and HyperPod paths let teams choose and tune compute resources when infrastructure-level trade-offs matter.

The overlap is intentional. A custom model developed with SageMaker AI may be hosted there or, when the model and configuration are eligible, deployed through Bedrock for serverless inference. Conversely, a project can begin with Bedrock and move to SageMaker AI only when prompt engineering and retrieval no longer deliver the required behavior.
Quick decision: which service fits your workload?
| Question | Prefer Amazon Bedrock when… | Prefer Amazon SageMaker AI when… |
|---|---|---|
| What are you building? | A generative-AI feature, assistant, workflow, or agent based on foundation models. | A predictive or classical-ML system, a custom model, or a generative model requiring substantial training or tuning. |
| Where do you want to start? | With managed foundation models and application APIs. | With model development, data, training jobs, customization, and deployment controls. |
| How much infrastructure do you want to manage? | As little as possible; use managed, serverless access and service features. | More direct control over instances, accelerators, deployment topology, utilization, and performance trade-offs. |
| What kind of customization is needed? | Prompt design, retrieval, guardrails, orchestration, and supported Bedrock customization or model import. | Fine-tuning or other training workflows, custom evaluation, specialized serving, or a model-development pipeline. |
| How is usage billed? | Primarily by input and output tokens for inference, with separately priced features. | By resource usage for training, inference, and HyperPod, based on the selected compute and configuration. |
| Can you combine them? | Yes, for application development and eligible serverless inference. | Yes, for customization, controlled training, or infrastructure-managed deployment. |
This table is a workload guide, not a price or performance ranking. AWS has not established a single cost or speed winner for every model, Region, traffic pattern, or deployment design.
Choose Bedrock for an application-first generative-AI project
Use managed foundation models instead of building the serving stack
Bedrock is the natural starting point when the product requirement is “add a capable generative model to an application.” The team can select among supported foundation models, call them through APIs, and build application logic around the responses. The service abstracts much of the provisioning and model-serving work that would otherwise become an engineering project.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This approach is useful for customer-support assistants, document question answering, content transformation, internal knowledge tools, and agents that call business systems. Bedrock’s application features can cover retrieval, policy enforcement, multi-step orchestration, and prompt lifecycle work without requiring the team to assemble every component independently.
Use prompt engineering and retrieval before changing model weights
Many requirements are better addressed by supplying the model with the right instructions and context than by training a new model. Bedrock supports prompt management and retrieval-oriented features such as Knowledge Bases. A team can ground answers in approved documents, tune instructions, and add tool or workflow steps while retaining a managed inference path.
Retrieval does not eliminate the need for data governance. You still need to decide which sources are indexed, how documents are updated, what permissions apply to retrieved content, and how the application handles missing or conflicting evidence.
Use Bedrock when operational simplicity is the priority
Bedrock reduces the amount of infrastructure your team must select and operate for supported models. That can shorten the path from proof of concept to a production API, particularly when the team does not have specialists in GPU scheduling, model servers, or distributed training. It also makes a managed service boundary attractive for teams whose main expertise is product engineering rather than machine-learning infrastructure.

Do not assume Bedrock means zero customization
A Bedrock choice does not prohibit customization. AWS’s current comparison describes model-customization and custom-model-import options, but the exact method, supported model, limits, and Regional availability can change. Verify the model and feature combination in the current AWS documentation for the Region you intend to use before committing to an architecture.

Choose SageMaker AI for model development, training, and predictive ML
Use SageMaker AI when you must build or train the model
SageMaker AI is the stronger fit when the core work is a model-development lifecycle rather than an application assembled around an existing foundation model. That includes preparing training data, running managed training jobs, tuning a model, evaluating variants, registering artifacts, and deploying a chosen version.
The same applies to predictive and classical machine learning. Forecasting, classification, ranking, anomaly detection, and other non-generative workloads sit naturally in SageMaker AI’s broader scope. Choosing Bedrock for those jobs would force an application-oriented generative service into a problem it was not designed to cover.
Use SageMaker AI when infrastructure control affects the outcome
Teams often need to make explicit decisions about accelerator type, instance size, replica count, autoscaling, network placement, storage, batching, concurrency, and deployment topology. Those choices influence latency, throughput, availability, and cost. SageMaker AI gives you a managed control plane while exposing more of the compute and serving decisions than a purely serverless model API.
This control is valuable when a model has unusual memory requirements, when predictable latency matters, when sustained high utilization changes the economics, or when the organization has an established platform team that can operate a customized serving stack. It also gives you a place to optimize a model and its runtime together rather than treating inference as a fixed API.
Managed does not require you to run every server yourself
SageMaker AI offers managed training and serverless customization paths. You can use the service without manually administering every training host, while still choosing a workflow with more control than prompt-only development. For very large or demanding jobs, HyperPod provides a path to manage specialized training infrastructure at scale. The appropriate option depends on the model, data volume, training algorithm, and performance target.
Customization options: prompts, fine-tuning, and training
Prompt and retrieval changes
Start here when the model is broadly capable and the gap is application context, tone, formatting, or access to private information. Prompt templates, few-shot examples, retrieval, tools, and guardrails can change behavior without producing a new model artifact. This is usually the fastest way to test whether a requirement is actually a data or orchestration problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Serverless customization in SageMaker AI
AWS documentation lists serverless customization techniques including supervised fine-tuning, direct preference optimization, reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, and reinforcement learning from AI feedback. Availability depends on the supported model and the current SageMaker AI documentation. These workflows can alter model behavior beyond what prompts alone provide without requiring you to design a traditional always-on training cluster.
Managed training and HyperPod
Use managed training jobs when you need a repeatable, data-driven training process and control over the resources assigned to it. Consider HyperPod when distributed training scale, specialized infrastructure, or scheduling efficiency becomes a central engineering concern. These paths require more decisions around data, checkpoints, experiment tracking, failure recovery, and resource utilization than a Bedrock application project.
Custom model deployment choices
A model customized in SageMaker AI can be hosted with SageMaker AI for direct control of its endpoint and compute. If the model and configuration meet Bedrock’s eligibility requirements, it may instead be deployed through Bedrock for serverless inference. The latter can simplify application integration, but it does not make every custom model or every customization method automatically eligible.

How the two services work together
A combined architecture is often more practical than an either-or decision. AWS’s decision guidance describes a progression in which a team starts with Bedrock prompt engineering and retrieval, moves to SageMaker AI serverless customization when model behavior must change, and then uses SageMaker AI training or HyperPod when deeper control is justified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Prototype the product in Bedrock. Select a supported foundation model, define the prompt and response contract, connect retrieval or tools, and test safety and quality with representative requests.
- Measure the remaining gap. Record failure categories such as missing domain knowledge, inconsistent structure, refusal behavior, latency, or cost. Do not jump to fine-tuning until you know which problem training is expected to solve.
- Try supported customization. If prompts and retrieval cannot close the gap, evaluate an eligible SageMaker AI customization workflow and compare it with the original Bedrock baseline.
- Choose the serving location. Host the custom model in SageMaker AI when endpoint, instance, scaling, or network control is important. Use Bedrock serverless inference only when the model and configuration are eligible and the managed operating model fits the requirements.
- Keep the application boundary stable. Encapsulate model calls behind your own service interface so that you can change models or serving locations without rewriting every client.
This progression avoids paying the operational cost of training before the product has demonstrated a need for it, while preserving a route to deeper customization.
Pricing: compare the billing mechanics, not a headline winner
Bedrock cost structure
AWS describes Bedrock inference pricing in terms of input and output tokens. Features such as Knowledge Bases, Guardrails, and Data Automation are priced separately. Your bill therefore depends on the selected model, the number and size of requests, generated output, and every additional Bedrock capability in the request path.
SageMaker AI cost structure
SageMaker AI charges for resource usage in workflows such as training jobs, inference, and HyperPod. The cost depends on the instance or accelerator type and size, how long resources run, utilization, storage, and the deployment configuration. A low-utilization endpoint can have a very different cost profile from a heavily used, carefully autoscaled one.
Information needed for a meaningful estimate
- AWS Region and the exact model or model family.
- Requests per minute or hour, peak concurrency, and expected uptime.
- Average input and output tokens, context length, and retry behavior.
- Bedrock features enabled, such as retrieval, guardrails, agents, or data processing.
- For SageMaker AI, instance or accelerator type, replica count, autoscaling policy, endpoint uptime, and storage.
- For training, dataset size, number of runs, checkpoint strategy, duration, and schedule.
- Whether traffic is steady, bursty, seasonal, or limited to development and evaluation.
Without those inputs, declaring one service cheaper would be misleading. A token-priced API may suit intermittent traffic, while a tuned SageMaker AI deployment may be attractive for sustained, predictable utilization; the reverse can also be true after model, Region, and feature choices are included.

Model and Regional availability can change the recommendation
Bedrock’s model catalog documents supported foundation models, their capabilities, and the AWS Regions in which they are available. Catalog entries and Regional support change, so check the current model reference for the exact model, feature, and Region before designing around it.
Perform the same check for customization and deployment. A model may support inference in one Region but not a particular customization method, agent feature, or custom-model import path. Data-residency, latency, networking, and cross-Region requirements can eliminate an otherwise attractive option.
Record the date and Region of your architecture decision, and recheck availability before launch. The AWS comparison guide used for this decision was last updated July 23, 2026; service capabilities continue to evolve.
A practical selection process
Step 1: classify the workload
Write down whether the output is generated language, images, or another foundation-model task; a predictive/classical-ML result; or a custom model that your team must train. Generative application work points toward Bedrock. Predictive ML and model-building work point toward SageMaker AI.

Step 2: define the control boundary
List the controls that are non-negotiable: specific accelerators, private networking, endpoint topology, maximum latency, throughput, autoscaling behavior, model weights, training data, or reproducible training. The more of these you must set directly, the stronger the case for SageMaker AI.
Step 3: test the managed path
For a generative application, build a small Bedrock evaluation with realistic prompts, retrieved documents, safety cases, and peak-like request patterns. Measure quality, latency, failure modes, and token use. This establishes whether application-level techniques are sufficient.
Step 4: identify the reason to customize
Move toward SageMaker AI only for a specific, measurable gap: domain behavior that retrieval cannot supply, a required output format, a performance target, a cost profile, or a model unavailable as a managed Bedrock option. Define the acceptance test before training.
Step 5: verify eligibility and Region support
Check the current AWS documentation for model, customization, import, inference, and Regional support. Treat an unverified model or feature as unavailable for planning purposes.
Step 6: model the full cost
Estimate inference, training, storage, monitoring, data processing, retrieval, and idle capacity. Use the traffic and utilization assumptions from your evaluation rather than a generic per-request example.
Step 7: choose a reversible first release
Keep model access behind an internal interface, version prompts and evaluation sets, and retain the option to move an eligible custom model between SageMaker AI hosting and Bedrock inference. This limits rework as quality and traffic requirements become clearer.

Picking a service by brand familiarity
“AWS AI service” is not a sufficient selection criterion. A managed foundation-model API and a model-training platform have different control surfaces. Start with the workload and required controls, then choose the service.
Assuming serverless means unlimited or free
Bedrock removes much infrastructure management, but token usage and add-on features still incur charges, and quotas, model limits, and Regional availability apply. SageMaker AI serverless customization removes some host management, but training and inference remain resource- and configuration-dependent.

Comparing services without a workload
There is no meaningful universal price or latency comparison. A comparison must specify model, Region, token volumes, concurrency, uptime, instance or accelerator choice, and enabled features.
Assuming every custom model can run everywhere
Custom-model deployment and Bedrock inference eligibility are conditional. Verify the exact model and configuration, and plan a SageMaker AI hosting path when Bedrock eligibility is not established.
Ignoring application responsibilities
Neither service automatically makes an application accurate, secure, or compliant. Add access controls, prompt-injection defenses, data classification, logging policies, evaluation, rate limiting, and incident procedures at the application and platform layers.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
AWS’s comparison materials provide service positioning, supported workflow descriptions, pricing bases, and a combined progression. They do not establish an independent, apples-to-apples benchmark proving that Bedrock is faster, cheaper, or more accurate than SageMaker AI across workloads. Vendor-reported figures tied to individual features should not be read as a direct service-versus-service benchmark.
For a concrete architecture recommendation, collect your model, Region, traffic, customization, latency, and governance requirements. Those details determine whether the managed simplicity of Bedrock or the control surface of SageMaker AI produces the better result—and whether using both is the least risky path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SageMaker AI host a model that I first developed with Bedrock?
Bedrock is primarily an application and inference platform, but AWS also documents customization and custom-model import options. When a model is eligible, a custom model developed through SageMaker AI can be deployed through Bedrock; otherwise, host it in SageMaker AI and verify the current model and Region requirements.
Is Bedrock always cheaper than SageMaker AI because it is serverless?
No. Bedrock inference is generally metered by input and output tokens, with separate charges for features such as retrieval or guardrails. SageMaker AI is metered by resource usage. The cheaper design depends on model, Region, traffic, utilization, training, storage, and deployment choices.
Which service should a team use for a non-generative prediction model?
SageMaker AI is the appropriate starting point for predictive and classical machine learning because it covers model development, training, and deployment beyond foundation-model application APIs.
