Avowed combat is built around flexible loadouts rather than a locked class. You can combine swords, shields, two-handed weapons, guns, bows, wands, grimoires, spells, and elemental effects, then maintain two weapon setups and swap between them during play. Four broad skill directions—Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike—shape your abilities, while companions contribute active skills that you should trigger deliberately.

The most reliable approach is to give each loadout a clear job, keep a second range or damage type available, and build your party around frontline control, pressure, and recovery. Kai is the practical tank and aggro-drawing choice; Giatta is the clearest healing choice in the official examples.

How Avowed combat works

Avowed uses a real-time, mix-and-match combat system. Obsidian describes the foundation as combining “swords, spells, guns, and shields,” with bows, grimoires, freezing, burning, and shield bashes also part of the toolkit. You are not forced to remain a pure fighter, archer, or mage. Your equipment, selected abilities, attributes, upgrades, and companions determine how a fight plays out.

Think of every encounter as a problem of distance, damage type, control, and survival. A close-range setup can block and interrupt but may struggle to reach flying or distant targets. A ranged setup can apply pressure safely but needs a response when enemies close the gap. Elemental and spell options add status effects and area control, while companions can hold enemies in place or restore the party.

Exact damage rankings are not established by the available official material. Performance can change with patch version, difficulty, attributes, upgrades, and the encounter itself, so choose weapons by the role and tempo you can use consistently rather than by an assumed universal tier list.

Weapon types and the roles they support

Weapon or setup What it is good at Best fit What to watch for
One-handed weapon and shield Blocking, close control, shield bashes, and safer engagements Frontline players and defensive hybrids Lower reach than ranged tools; requires staying close enough to control the target
Two-handed weapon Committed melee hits and strong pressure at close range Players who prefer deliberate, high-impact attacks Missed swings and poor positioning are more costly because you have less defensive coverage
Pistol or arquebus Distance damage and opening pressure Ranged or mixed physical builds Enemies that reach you can force a fast swap to a close-range option
Bow Repeated ranged attacks while maintaining distance Ranger-oriented play and mobile damage Requires space and a plan for enemies that break through your spacing
Wand Spell-driven ranged damage and status application Wizard hybrids and players who want magical pressure without relying only on a grimoire Damage and effect value depend on the abilities and upgrades paired with it
Grimoire Access to spells and elemental effects Spell-focused and elemental-control builds Track cooldowns and keep a physical or non-elemental backup for coverage

These categories are identities, not permanent classes. A fighter can carry a spell option, and a ranger can keep a close-range backup. Select a primary weapon that matches the distance and tempo you enjoy, then make the second loadout solve the situations your first one handles poorly.

Using two weapon loadouts

The opening tutorial teaches the ability to hot-swap between two weapon builds. Treat the feature as a combat decision, not just an inventory convenience. One loadout should handle the situation you expect most often; the other should cover a different range, damage profile, or control need.

Practical pairings

  • Close plus distance: Pair a shield or two-handed weapon with a bow, pistol, or arquebus. Fight in melee when you can control the group and swap when a target is out of reach.
  • Physical plus elemental: Keep a conventional weapon set for reliable hits and a wand or grimoire set for burning, freezing, area effects, or other status pressure.
  • Control plus burst: Use one setup to interrupt, stun, or hold enemies and the other to capitalize with heavier attacks.

How to set up the pair

  1. Decide what your first loadout must do in the majority of fights: hold a frontline, deal sustained ranged damage, or apply spells and status effects.
  2. Equip weapons and abilities that reinforce that job instead of mixing unrelated tools into every slot.
  3. Build the second loadout around a specific weakness. If the first setup is melee, add distance or elemental control; if it is spell-heavy, add a physical option that does not depend on the same cooldowns.
  4. Use the loadout-switch command taught during the tutorial and practice changing before an enemy reaches you, not after your first setup has already failed.
  5. Revisit both setups after changing your skill direction, weapon upgrades, or companion lineup. A second loadout is useful only when its abilities are ready for the encounters you actually face.

Patch behavior can matter. Obsidian’s Patch 2.1 notes include a combat-toggle setting and a fix involving loadout switching and grimoire cooldown reduction. If a control, cooldown, or setting differs from these instructions, check the current patch notes and the options menu rather than assuming an old prompt is still correct.

Choosing a skill direction

The four expansive skill trees—Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike—are best understood as directions for a build, not rigid classes. Start with the weapons you actually use, then select abilities that make that weapon identity better. Keep the second loadout complementary instead of duplicating every effect.

Fighter

Fighter abilities suit players who want to stay near enemies, block, interrupt, and win through direct weapon pressure. A shield setup emphasizes safety and control; a two-handed setup emphasizes committed melee attacks. A spell or ranged secondary loadout prevents the build from becoming helpless when closing distance is unsafe.

Ranger

Ranger is the natural direction for bows and other distance-focused weapons. Build around maintaining a useful gap, then reserve the second loadout for a close-range answer. This prevents a single enemy reaching you from turning every encounter into an emergency.

Wizard

Wizard supports grimoires, wands, spells, and elemental effects. A spell-focused player should think in sequences rather than isolated casts: create an area or status effect, then use control to keep enemies where it matters. Keep a physical option available for targets or moments when spell cooldowns are unavailable.

Godlike

Godlike is a distinct skill direction that can reinforce a character identity alongside weapon choices. Because the documented material does not assign it a single required weapon or damage ranking, select Godlike abilities according to the range, control, and party role you want rather than treating it as a separate mandatory class.

Hybrid planning

The developer discussion presents weapons, player abilities, spells, weapon enchantments, and companion environmental abilities as overlapping tools. That makes hybrids practical: a fighter can carry a spell option, while a ranger can keep a close-range weapon. The test for a hybrid is simple—each loadout needs a clear job, and the abilities must support the weapons you can reach quickly in combat.

Combining elemental effects and control

Elemental damage becomes more valuable when it changes enemy positioning or behavior. An official developer example uses a fireball area effect and then pulls an enemy into the fire. The general pattern is to place damage or control first, then use displacement, a stun, a freeze, or an interrupt to keep the target inside it.

A repeatable combo pattern

  1. Prepare the space: Place the fire, freeze, or other area effect where enemies must pass or where a companion is holding them.
  2. Force the position: Pull, stun, interrupt, or otherwise move the target into the dangerous area.
  3. Exploit the opening: Use your primary weapon or a companion active ability while the enemy is controlled.
  4. Swap when the situation changes: Move to the second loadout if the target escapes the area, closes on you, or resists the original damage type.

This approach is more reliable than casting every effect independently. It also explains why control, not just raw damage, should be one of the criteria when comparing weapons and abilities.

Building a party around three jobs

Companions come from different species, fight alongside you, and have unique active abilities. Xbox’s survival guidance emphasizes that every active ability they learn can be accessed in combat. Leaving those abilities entirely to automation wastes part of the combat system.

Party job What it contributes How to cover it
Frontline control Draws attention, interrupts dangerous enemies, and keeps targets from reaching vulnerable allies A durable player setup or a companion such as Kai, who is described as tanky and able to draw aggro
Damage and pressure Steady weapon damage, burst, ranged attacks, or elemental effects Your primary weapon identity plus a companion whose active ability adds pressure
Recovery and utility Healing, buffs, environmental interactions, and tools that let the party continue through attrition Giatta is the official example of a companion who keeps the party healed; supplement her with your own control or damage

Tank-oriented party

Use Kai when enemies must be held in place or when your build needs time to set up spells and ranged attacks. Pair his aggro-drawing role with your most reliable damage source and a second loadout that can respond when enemies break formation. Deliberately trigger his active ability when a dangerous group is about to reach you rather than waiting until the back line is already under attack.

Healer and attrition party

Choose Giatta when recovery is the limiting factor. Her healing role gives you more room to maintain pressure, but it does not remove the need for control. Use your own loadouts to interrupt threats before they overwhelm her, and activate her healing ability when the party needs recovery instead of treating it as background automation.

Ranged party

Make the player’s bow, pistol, or arquebus the main pressure tool and keep a melee or shield setup as the second loadout. A frontline companion is especially useful because distance damage loses value when every enemy is standing on top of you. Kai can provide that aggro-drawing space, while your companion ability timing determines whether the gap remains open.

Spell-focused party

Use a grimoire or wand as the primary identity, with a physical backup for cooldown gaps and resistant targets. Combine your elemental area effects with companion control or environmental abilities. Giatta adds recovery when repeated casting leads to attrition; Kai adds time and positioning for the spell sequence to work.

How to compare any build

When two weapons, abilities, or party configurations seem close, compare them on four axes:

  • Damage profile: Is it primarily physical, elemental, or mixed?
  • Control: Can it stun, pull, freeze, interrupt, or otherwise determine where an enemy fights?
  • Party dependence: Can it survive and create openings alone, or does it require a companion to provide defense or healing?

A build that looks powerful on paper may be a poor choice if its range conflicts with your party. For example, a fragile spell setup benefits from aggro control, while a shield player may gain more from a damage-oriented companion than from duplicating defensive tools.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using only one loadout

Symptom: You repeatedly struggle whenever enemies fight outside your preferred range. Fix: Make the second loadout a deliberate answer—distance for melee, physical pressure for spell cooldowns, or control for a damage-focused setup.

Ignoring companion actives

Symptom: Encounters feel harder than your equipment suggests, especially when enemies rush the party. Fix: Watch for the moment that calls for aggro, healing, or control and trigger the relevant companion ability manually.

Stacking damage without control

Symptom: Area effects are placed, but targets leave them immediately. Fix: Apply the area effect first, then pull, stun, freeze, or interrupt so enemies remain exposed.

Building around an assumed tier list

Symptom: A weapon described as dominant elsewhere does not suit your difficulty, attributes, upgrades, or encounter. Fix: Evaluate the setup using range, damage profile, control, and party dependence; official material does not establish universal damage rankings.

Following outdated controls

Symptom: A loadout or combat setting does not behave as an older guide describes. Fix: Confirm the current patch, including Patch 2.1 changes to combat settings and a loadout/grimoire cooldown issue, then use the prompts shown by your version.

A practical decision framework

  1. Choose the distance you enjoy most: close, mid-range, or far.
  2. Select a primary weapon identity that supports that distance.
  3. Choose a skill direction—Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, or Godlike—that reinforces the identity.
  4. Build the second loadout to cover a different range or damage profile.
  5. Assign the party jobs of frontline control, pressure, and recovery.
  6. Pick Kai when aggro and positioning are the problem; pick Giatta when healing and attrition are the problem.
  7. Practice one elemental-control sequence, such as placing fire and pulling an enemy into it.
  8. Trigger companion abilities as part of your rotation, then adjust after seeing which job is failing in actual encounters.

The result is a combat plan that remains flexible without becoming unfocused: one loadout handles your preferred fight, the other handles its counters, and your companions fill the role your equipment cannot cover alone.
