Start by finishing Avowed’s opening combat prompts, then explore deliberately: watch the minimap for upgrade materials, establish every camp you find, keep companions with you, and spend early points on abilities that match the weapons or grimoire you actually use. You do not have to choose a permanent class. Avowed’s Fighter, Ranger, Wizard and Godlike trees can be used independently or mixed, and you can reset ability and attribute points for skeyts, so your first build should be a practical experiment rather than a permanent commitment.
What should you do first in Avowed?
The opening hour is mainly about learning the game’s loop: fight, collect materials, return to a camp, improve your equipment and recruit allies. Resist the urge to sprint past these systems. Completing the introductory objectives gives you the basic combat and ability prompts that later encounters assume you understand.
Finish the opening combat objectives
Follow the initial objective until the basic attack, defense and ability instructions are complete. Use this time to test the timing and range of your starting weapon rather than immediately spending points on every option presented. Notice whether you prefer staying in an enemy’s face, keeping distance, or alternating between weapons and spells; that preference should guide your first unlocks.
Read the map and minimap while you travel
Open the map frequently and keep an eye on the minimap. Early upgrades use gathered plants and other materials, and Paradisan Ladder is particularly important. Its minimap icon and vertical marker help you locate it when it is above or below your current position. If a marker appears close but you cannot see the plant, check cliffs, ledges and lower paths instead of assuming the item is missing.

Establish every party camp you encounter
Camps are your practical base for crafting and upgrading. Once a camp is established, the map lets you fast-travel to it from almost anywhere. Activating camps as you pass through a region therefore shortens future supply runs and gives you a reliable place to change equipment. Make camp discovery part of your route rather than waiting until you are overloaded or under-equipped.
Recruit companions and use their abilities
Keep companions in the party while exploring a region. Their abilities unlock or improve as they level, and they are most useful when you actively trigger them instead of treating them as passive damage. Xbox’s beginner example is Kai’s leap: it can stun and taunt an enemy, creating a moment for a vulnerable caster to reposition. Watch what each companion’s ability does, then use it to create space, interrupt pressure or set up your own attack.
Upgrade the setup you really carry
Spend common materials on the weapon, armor or spell setup you are actually using. Avoid scattering rare materials across several early weapons before you know which style feels natural. A focused upgrade usually gives you a clearer combat advantage than maintaining multiple underpowered alternatives. You can still experiment with abilities later; scarce crafting materials are harder to replace than a respec fee.
How does Avowed’s skill system work?
There is no mandatory class choice
Avowed presents four expansive skill trees: Fighter, Ranger, Wizard and Godlike. They are archetypes, not locked classes. Game director Carrie Patel has explained that you can build entirely within one tree or combine trees to create a battlemage, a stealth-capable fighter or another hybrid. Your starting choice does not prevent later investment elsewhere.
Patel described that freedom this way: "If you want to be all-wizard, you can build entirely throughout that skill tree; if you want to mix and match – make a battlemage, or make someone who can be a little stealthy in certain moments and a little more aggressive in others – you have a lot of freedom to do that."
Ability choices arrive at level-up milestones
Each level-up milestone grants an ability choice. Some milestones also improve attributes, so not every advancement is a new active skill. Read the entire tooltip before confirming a point: later tiers can require a character level as well as prerequisite abilities. A skill that looks attractive in isolation may be unavailable until you take an earlier node or reach the required level.

Inspect every tree before committing
Tree labels describe themes, not strict ownership. The official beginner guide uses Parry as its clearest cross-tree example: a character focused on Fighter can still benefit from the Ranger passive. Before deciding that a branch is irrelevant, look for effects that solve your actual problem—survivability, interruption, mobility, damage or resource support.

Which skills should you unlock first?
The best first point depends on how you engage enemies and which equipment you can keep upgraded. Use the recommendations below as starting patterns, not mandatory builds.
Melee or front-line character
Choose a reliable gap-closer or interrupt such as Charge when its behavior fits the weapon plan you are using. Closing distance quickly can stop an enemy from controlling the fight and gives you a way to reach ranged threats. After that, add a defensive timing tool such as Parry if you are comfortable blocking and countering. Keep at least one control option available for enemies that guard, rush or otherwise deny ordinary attacks.
Test Charge in several encounters before buying additional ranks or related nodes. Its value depends on whether you can follow the movement with a weapon attack and whether the animation leaves you safe. Parry is especially useful when you are willing to watch an enemy’s wind-up rather than hold the block button continuously; if your timing is inconsistent, pair it with another defensive or control option instead of building around it immediately.
Ranged or stealth-oriented character
Begin with Ranger abilities that improve the weapon you are carrying. A bow-focused character should not spend several points on a branch whose weapon is sitting unused in the inventory. Once your primary attack feels reliable, add a defensive or mobility pickup from another tree if it covers a weakness, such as enemies reaching you before you can create distance.
Ranged play rewards deliberate positioning. Use terrain, companion-created openings and movement abilities to preserve your preferred distance. If a stealth option is valuable only in occasional encounters, keep the rest of your early points focused on effects that work in ordinary fights as well; Avowed’s flexible trees make targeted combinations more efficient than collecting every thematic node.

Wizard or grimoire user
Take an early spell you expect to cast often and keep a grimoire equipped so that spell is available during combat. GameSpot identifies Minor Missiles as a strong early Wizard unlock and notes that its first rank is sufficient for the early game. Treat later ranks as an upgrade after your core defenses or resources are stable rather than assuming every spell needs to be maximized immediately.
Wizard play asks you to manage essence and the grimoire alongside positioning. A spell that is powerful on paper is less useful if you cannot afford to cast it when an elite enemy closes in. Keep a non-spell attack or defensive response ready, and let companions hold attention when you need time to select a target or recover your preferred range.
Any mixed or experimental build
Choose by effect instead of tree name. Ask whether your next point supplies damage, control, defense, mobility or resource support that you currently lack. A Fighter passive may solve a Ranger’s close-range problem; a Wizard ability may give a weapon-focused character a way to punish clustered enemies. Mixed investment is most effective when each point has a job rather than when you alternate trees simply to sample them.
Fighter, Ranger or Wizard: how should you compare an opening?
These three openings differ less by permanent identity than by the demands they place on your first fights and your gear budget.
| Opening focus | Typical engagement distance | Main resource or rhythm | Control and safety considerations | Gear dependence | Value after a later respec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Close range | Stamina and weapon timing | Blocks, interrupts, gap-closing and counterattacks reward attention to enemy wind-ups | Usually concentrated on the melee weapon set you carry | Front-line fundamentals remain useful if you later add Ranger or Wizard tools |
| Ranger | Mid to long range, with mobility or stealth options | Weapon rhythm, positioning and ammunition or attack cadence | Distance and movement provide safety; a cross-tree defensive skill can cover emergencies | Best when upgrades follow the bow or other ranged weapon you actually equip | Mobility and defensive effects can remain useful in hybrid builds |
| Wizard | Long range or area control, with a fallback when enemies close | Essence management and grimoire selection | Spells can control space, but casting windows and resource limits require protection | Requires a grimoire and enough investment to keep your chosen spell setup effective | Individual spells can support a battlemage or weapon-focused build after respec |
The table describes practical trade-offs, not hard class rules. You can move between these patterns because the trees are open and points are resettable. Pick the opening whose distance and resource rhythm you can execute consistently, then borrow one tool from another tree when it fixes a specific weakness.
A low-risk process for spending every new point
- Identify the fight you are losing. Decide whether enemies are reaching you, surviving too long, interrupting casts, breaking your guard or forcing you out of resources.
- Search all four trees for an answer. Do not filter by the tree you have used so far. Compare active abilities and passives by their effect and read their prerequisites.
- Check the equipment requirement. Confirm that the ability works with the weapon or grimoire you keep equipped. If it needs a weapon you do not plan to carry, postpone it.
- Buy one core tool and test it. Use it across several ordinary encounters, an encounter with multiple enemies and a tougher target. Pay attention to range, animation time, stamina or essence cost and whether companions can create the opening you need.
- Add a complementary effect. Once the core tool feels dependable, choose control, defense, mobility or resource support that covers its weakness instead of duplicating the same damage type.
- Review the tooltip at the next milestone. Tiered abilities may require a level or prerequisite. Planning one node ahead prevents you from spending a point that leaves your intended combination inaccessible.
Can you respec your character?
Yes. Avowed lets you reset abilities by spending skeyts, and its starter guidance also describes resetting attribute and ability points for a small amount of money. That cost makes experimentation practical: try one or two core abilities, play enough fights to judge their animation, range and resource demand, then reset if the combination does not suit you.

When a reset is worthwhile
- Your chosen ability depends on a weapon or grimoire you no longer carry.
- An animation is too slow for the distance at which you actually fight.
- You cannot sustain the ability’s stamina or essence cost during longer encounters.
- A defensive or control gap is causing more failures than additional damage would solve.
- You want to change from a single-tree approach to a deliberate hybrid.
How to test before paying for another reset
Use a small core: one main attack improvement, one defensive or control answer and any companion ability that creates space. Fight with that package long enough to see it under pressure. If it works, continue along its prerequisites; if it does not, reset once and change one variable at a time so you know what improved the result.

Spending rare materials on every weapon
Symptom: several weapons are upgraded slightly, but none performs well against tougher enemies.
Fix: choose the weapon or spell setup you use most, improve it first, and keep alternatives at a lower priority until your preferred style is confirmed.
Ignoring camps until you need one
Symptom: a return trip for crafting or upgrades becomes long and inconvenient.
Fix: establish camps as you discover them. They become map destinations for later fast travel and function as the region’s upgrade hub.

Choosing by class label alone
Symptom: you pass over a useful passive because it appears in another tree.
Fix: inspect every tree and evaluate the effect. Parry’s cross-tree usefulness demonstrates why a Fighter-heavy character should still review Ranger options.
Buying higher ranks before proving the first rank
Symptom: resources are committed to an ability whose timing or range does not fit your play.
Fix: use the initial rank in varied encounters first. For Minor Missiles, for example, the first rank is identified as enough for early play; add later ranks only after your defenses and resource handling are dependable.
Assuming the first point defines the whole character
Symptom: you avoid testing a different role because you believe the opening choice cannot be changed.
Fix: remember that Avowed supports mixed trees and paid resets. Treat early points as a testable foundation, not a permanent class declaration.

A dependable beginner setup has one attack pattern you enjoy, one answer to enemies that close or guard, and enough defense or control to create safe openings. Upgrade only the equipment that supports that plan, keep companions active, and use camps and the minimap to maintain your supplies. When a point feels wrong, reset it for skeyts instead of forcing an ability that does not match your timing. The strongest early build is therefore the one you can execute consistently, whether its points come from one tree or a carefully chosen mix.
