In brief: Avenue Supermarts is a focused value retailer built around DMart supermarkets; Reliance Retail is a much larger, multi-category business spanning physical stores, digital commerce and distribution. In FY2025-26, Reliance Retail reported far greater absolute scale, while Avenue Supermarts reported faster growth in consolidated revenue from operations. Neither comparison alone tells investors which shares are more attractive.
What is the difference between DMart and Reliance Retail?
Avenue Supermarts Limited operates DMart, a value-focused supermarket chain. Its stated product groups are Foods, Non-Foods (FMCG), and General Merchandise & Apparel. The company describes its approach as “Everyday Low Cost/Everyday Low Price” (EDLC/EDLP): its business is centered on offering everyday goods at value-oriented prices rather than operating a broad portfolio of retail categories. Its description and operating figures are in the FY2025-26 Avenue Supermarts annual report.
Reliance Retail covers a wider range of categories and channels. The company identifies grocery, consumer electronics, fashion and lifestyle, and pharma among its categories, with formats and platforms including Reliance Digital, MyJio Store, Netmeds, Tira, AJIO and JioMart. Reliance Industries describes the model as an integrated ecosystem combining physical retail, digital commerce and distribution. That breadth means the two businesses are not simply interchangeable supermarket chains; investors are comparing a focused retailer with a diversified retail operation within a larger corporate group. See Reliance Retail’s business overview and Reliance Industries’ FY2025-26 retail report.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe focus-versus-breadth distinction is useful, but it does not automatically establish which business is better. DMart’s narrower proposition puts attention on how well it executes its value-led supermarket model. Reliance Retail’s wider portfolio means performance spans more categories, formats and channels. That mix may diversify exposure across retail activities, while also making it important to understand how different parts of the business contribute. These are ways to frame the comparison, not forecasts about future results.

How large are the businesses?
Reliance Retail is larger on the reported absolute store and revenue measures. The figures need to be read with their dates and definitions: store counts include different retail formats, while “value of sales and services” and “revenue from operations” are distinct measures. The table uses each company’s stated reporting basis rather than treating unlike figures as equivalent.
| Measure | Avenue Supermarts / DMart | Reliance Retail |
|---|---|---|
| Stores | 500 as of 31 March 2026. Avenue Supermarts FY2025-26 annual report. | 20,160 as of 31 March 2026; Reliance Retail’s business page separately reports 20,169 as of 30 June 2026. All rupee amounts are Indian rupees in crore, and FY2025-26 ended on 31 March 2026. Reliance Retail’s figures are for the retail business reported by Reliance Industries; they are not standalone results for a separately listed Reliance Retail share. Avenue Supermarts’ revenue and PAT figures in the table are consolidated. The company’s audited FY2025-26 filing is also available through the National Stock Exchange of India.
Scale can answer “Which is bigger, DMart or Reliance Retail?” on absolute reported measures: Reliance Retail has more stores, more reported retail area on its later-dated business page, and much higher FY2025-26 revenue from operations. It does not answer whether an individual store is more productive, whether expansion earns an attractive return, or whether one listed share offers better value. Reliance’s network spans multiple formats and categories, so a store is not necessarily comparable with a DMart supermarket. Counts are useful context, not a stand-alone measure of reach or economics.

Revenue growth is not the same as a long-term advantage
On the shared measure of revenue from operations, Avenue Supermarts’ consolidated growth rate in FY2025-26 was 15.94%, compared with Reliance Retail’s 12.8%. That is a one-year comparison, not proof that Avenue will continue to grow faster. A meaningful assessment would examine several years of growth, store additions, mature-store performance, investment requirements and operating cash generation. The available figures do not establish a durable growth ranking or predict future returns.
Keep the absolute increase and the growth rate conceptually separate. Reliance Retail’s much larger revenue base means its reported growth rate and its total scale answer different questions. Avenue’s higher percentage increase in this one year does not mean it added more revenue in rupee terms or that the difference will persist. Investors can compare trends across several fiscal years, but should use matching periods and the same reported revenue measure for each business.
Do not compare unlike profit margins
Avenue Supermarts reported consolidated PAT of ₹2,969.86 crore for FY2025-26. Its annual report also presents standalone operating profit margin of 6.64% and standalone net profit margin of 4.81%. Those ratios are standalone, not consolidated. Reliance Retail reported EBITDA of ₹27,034 crore and an EBITDA margin of 8.2% on revenue from operations, down from 8.6% in FY2024-25; Reliance says the moderation reflected a growing contribution from hyper-local commerce.
EBITDA is measured before depreciation, interest and tax, while PAT is after expenses including those items. The stated margins also have different bases and reporting perimeters. They should not be ranked as though they were equivalent profitability measures. Investors should use aligned measures and clarify whether they are reviewing standalone or consolidated accounts before drawing conclusions.

The reported movement in Reliance Retail’s EBITDA margin is a reminder to look beyond top-line growth: its EBITDA rose 7.7% while revenue from operations rose 12.8%, and the reported margin declined from 8.6% to 8.2%. The company attributes the moderation to a growing hyper-local commerce contribution. That explanation is relevant context, but it does not substitute for tracking future results or examining how the business reports costs, contribution and profitability over time.
Keep sales measures distinct
Reliance Retail’s ₹3,71,085 crore value of sales and services is not the same metric as its ₹3,28,202 crore revenue from operations. Nor should either be compared as if it were identical to Avenue Supermarts’ revenue from operations. Each figure can be useful within its reporting context, but combining or ranking them without preserving the labels can create a misleading impression of relative scale or growth.
A practical comparison rule is to put the metric name, fiscal period and reporting perimeter beside every number. For example, “consolidated revenue from operations, FY2025-26” identifies Avenue Supermarts’ ₹68,820.74 crore figure; “revenue from operations, FY2025-26” identifies Reliance Retail’s ₹3,28,202 crore figure in Reliance Industries’ retail report. A value-of-sales number, an EBITDA amount and a PAT amount belong in separate rows because each describes a different part of the business or income statement.
What do the store networks and productivity figures show?
At 31 March 2026, Avenue Supermarts reported 500 stores, 20.58 million square feet of retail business area, 84 distribution centres and 12 packing centres. It reported annualised sales revenue per retail business area square foot of ₹33,422 for FY2025-26, compared with ₹33,896 for FY2024-25. This is a company-defined productivity measure. The source does not establish an equivalent, directly comparable area-based metric for Reliance Retail, so it cannot support a like-for-like ranking of sales productivity.
The productivity figure provides an additional lens beyond store openings: it relates annualised sales revenue to the company’s retail business area. The reported figure was lower in FY2025-26 than the previous year, moving from ₹33,896 to ₹33,422 per square foot. It should be treated as Avenue Supermarts’ own measure and read alongside changes in store area and the business’s financial results. It is not a measure of profit per square foot, and it should not be compared with a rival’s differently defined area or revenue figure.
The distribution and packing centres also add context to Avenue Supermarts’ operating footprint. The 84 distribution centres and 12 packing centres are reported alongside the 500-store network; they are not additional retail stores. Investors assessing growth can track whether store expansion is accompanied by changes in the broader operating network, while avoiding assumptions about costs or returns that the reported counts alone do not establish.
Reliance Industries reported that Reliance Retail opened 1,564 stores during FY2025-26 and ended the year with 20,160 stores, 387 million registered customers and more than 1.9 billion transactions. Reliance Retail’s separate business page reports 20,169 stores, over 78.4 million square feet of retail area and 396 million-plus registered customers as of 30 June 2026. The later page is a separate point-in-time update, not a replacement value for the 31 March year-end report. Because the networks include differing formats and category mixes, a raw store-count comparison does not reveal supermarket reach, store productivity or the economics of operating each location.

Customer and transaction totals add a view of activity, but they are company-reported measures and do not by themselves show how often each customer shops, what they spend, or the profit earned on transactions. Likewise, opening 1,564 stores describes the pace of additions during the year, not the performance of those locations after opening. The figures help readers understand the breadth of the network; they should be combined with financial trends and comparable operating indicators rather than treated as proof of returns.
How important are digital retail and fulfilment?
DMart Ready
DMart Ready is Avenue Supermarts’ digital extension. Its stated service footprint was 18 cities in FY2025-26. The subsidiary reported revenue from operations of ₹4,093.61 crore and a loss of ₹306.53 crore for that year. These are subsidiary figures, not replacements for Avenue Supermarts’ consolidated parent results. For investors, they make the digital business’s expansion and path to sustainable economics relevant monitoring topics; the cited disclosure does not establish that online losses will persist or resolve.
The distinction between the subsidiary’s results and the listed parent’s consolidated results matters when interpreting the numbers. DMart Ready’s reported revenue and loss describe that subsidiary; Avenue Supermarts’ consolidated revenue and PAT include the group’s reported overall results. The online business’s 18-city footprint is also not directly comparable with the size of Reliance Retail’s reported hyper-local network, which covers a much broader set of cities and pincodes. An investor should not infer matching service scope from the fact that both businesses operate digital channels.
JioMart and hyper-local fulfilment
Reliance Retail’s digital and fulfilment activity includes JioMart and Milkbasket, alongside its other channels. Reliance Industries’ FY2025-26 report describes JioMart as a multi-category platform supported by hyper-local fulfilment. It says a network of more than 3,100 stores served over 5,100 pincodes in more than 1,200 cities. These are company-reported operating claims, not independently audited comparative benchmarks. Customer registrations, transaction counts and service reach can indicate activity, but on their own they do not show contribution margins, fulfilment costs or profitability.
Reliance Retail’s digital activity sits within its larger integrated model rather than being limited to a single online storefront. The reported channels include JioMart and Milkbasket, while the company’s broader portfolio also includes platforms such as AJIO and Netmeds. The disclosures establish a range of channels and a claimed fulfilment footprint; they do not supply a matched profitability breakdown for each platform. Investors should distinguish evidence of presence and customer reach from evidence of earnings contribution.

What does the comparison mean for a shareholder?
Avenue Supermarts is a more focused listed exposure
Avenue Supermarts is the listed company behind DMart. Its narrower category focus can make its core retail execution easier to follow: investors can track store openings, area, sales productivity and the disclosed financial results. Focus is not a guarantee of stronger performance, and the one-year area-based productivity figure should be read using the company’s own definition rather than presumed comparable to a rival’s.

The core investor question is whether the company can continue to grow its store base and revenue while translating that growth into profits and cash generation. The FY2025-26 disclosures show consolidated revenue from operations rising 15.94% and consolidated PAT rising 9.69%. Those rates differ, so it is useful to monitor both sales growth and earnings growth across multiple years. One annual comparison alone cannot explain the drivers or establish what will happen next.
Reliance Retail is part of a broader listed parent
The Reliance Retail operating figures cited here are reported within Reliance Industries’ retail disclosures. Investors buying Reliance Industries shares are assessing exposure to the broader parent company and its other businesses, not a separately listed Reliance Retail share. Retail growth, margins and store expansion are therefore only part of the listed-parent analysis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This creates an important difference in the investment comparison itself. Avenue Supermarts is the listed company whose disclosed business is centered on DMart, while Reliance Retail is the retail business within Reliance Industries. A direct operating comparison can help assess retail models, but it is not the same as comparing two standalone retail stocks. For a shareholder analysis, the relevant Reliance share is Reliance Industries, and its wider business and financial profile must also be considered.
Scale, breadth and growth answer different questions
- Scale: Reliance Retail reports a far larger store network and revenue base. That establishes greater absolute size on the disclosed measures, not better returns per store or per rupee invested.
- Focus: Avenue Supermarts’ value-led supermarket orientation differs from Reliance Retail’s mix of categories, formats and channels. Diversification may spread exposure across activities, while focus can make a business’s central operating model easier to assess; neither feature by itself settles investment merit.
- Growth: Avenue Supermarts grew faster on consolidated revenue from operations in FY2025-26. A single year is insufficient to infer a lasting growth advantage.
- Profitability: The reported PAT, EBITDA and margin figures are not directly interchangeable. Compare matched accounting measures and periods.
- Valuation: The operating disclosures do not establish which shares are cheaper or more attractive. That requires same-date share prices, market capitalisations and valuation measures for Avenue Supermarts and Reliance Industries, while keeping the Reliance Retail business distinct from its parent.
What investors should check next
Use the comparison as a starting framework, then consult the latest filings before making an investment decision. In particular, examine whether business growth is translating into earnings and cash, and whether the price paid for the listed company reflects realistic expectations. A practical checklist is:
- Compare revenue from operations over several years using the same fiscal periods and definitions.
- Separate consolidated results from standalone results, especially when reviewing Avenue Supermarts’ margins or subsidiary activity.
- Track store additions alongside area, mature-store performance and capital employed rather than treating a rising store count as a complete measure of success.
- Review whether digital and hyper-local operations disclose comparable contribution, fulfilment-cost and profitability information.
- For valuation, use matched-date market data and compare Avenue Supermarts shares with Reliance Industries shares, not with an assumed standalone Reliance Retail listing.
When applying that checklist, start by fixing the period and perimeter: FY2025-26 means the year ended 31 March 2026, while Reliance Retail’s 20,169-store and 78.4-million-square-foot update is dated 30 June 2026. Next, choose the same type of measure for both sides. Revenue from operations is the appropriate shared top-line comparison in the figures presented here; value of sales and services is a separate Reliance measure. Then check whether financial figures are consolidated or standalone, and whether profitability metrics refer to EBITDA, operating profit or PAT.
After aligning those basics, assess the business model rather than relying on headline totals. For Avenue Supermarts, the disclosed operating indicators include store count, retail business area, distribution and packing centres, and annualised sales revenue per area square foot. For Reliance Retail, the disclosures include store additions, registered customers, transactions, retail area at a later date, and JioMart’s reported service coverage. These indicators are not a complete matched data set, so use them to frame follow-up questions rather than to declare a winner on productivity.
Finally, keep the business comparison separate from valuation. The operating data cited here do not provide matched-date stock prices, market capitalisations or valuation multiples. Any conclusion about which shares are cheaper would require current, same-date market information and a broader look at Reliance Industries as a parent company. A company can be larger or grow faster in a given year without its shares necessarily offering the more attractive risk-and-return trade-off.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between DMart and Reliance Retail?

Reliance Retail is larger on the reported absolute measures here. At 31 March 2026 it reported 20,160 stores, compared with Avenue Supermarts’ 500, and FY2025-26 revenue from operations of ₹3,28,202 crore versus Avenue Supermarts’ consolidated ₹68,820.74 crore. Store formats and reporting perimeters differ, so these figures do not measure like-for-like productivity.
Which company grew faster in FY2025-26?

Not directly. Avenue Supermarts’ cited 4.81% net margin is a standalone ratio, while Reliance Retail’s 8.2% EBITDA margin is on revenue from operations and is measured before depreciation, interest and tax. Use aligned measures and reporting perimeters.
Is Reliance Retail a separately listed stock?
The operating figures discussed here are reported within Reliance Industries’ retail disclosures. Investors buying listed shares are buying Reliance Industries, the broader parent company, rather than a separately listed Reliance Retail share.
Does the comparison show which stock is more attractive?
No. The operating disclosures do not establish valuation or a recommendation. A share comparison requires same-date market data and valuation measures for Avenue Supermarts and Reliance Industries, while accounting for Reliance Industries’ other businesses.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Reliance Retail is far larger and spans more categories and channels; Avenue Supermarts is more focused on value-led supermarket retail and reported faster consolidated revenue-from-operations growth in FY2025-26. Those facts describe different business profiles, not which stock is the better buy. Compare matched measures and periods, distinguish Reliance Retail from its listed parent, and assess earnings, cash generation and valuation before drawing an investment conclusion.
