Wan is the first Avatar, and Korra is the Avatar immediately before Pavi in Avatar: Seven Havens. The confirmed succession is Wan, more than 90 unnamed Avatars, Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang and Korra, followed by Pavi. The official material does not yet give a complete calendar for the interval between Korra and Pavi, and the creators have ruled out a secret Avatar during it.

The confirmed Avatar succession at a glance

Avatar Studios’ official timeline establishes the named sequence below. It combines animated television, novels and comics, so the medium matters: some entries are essential screen chapters, while others expand an era without changing the main television order.

Avatar or era Where the story appears Central conflict or development Change to the world Role in the main screen chronology
Wan The Legend of Korra season 2, episodes 7–8, “Beginnings, Pt. 1” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2” Wan is exiled to the Spirit Wilds and becomes the first Avatar. The Avatar tradition begins. Essential backstory; the episodes are presented inside Korra, although Wan’s era is the beginning of the in-universe timeline.
Unnamed succession Not yet told in full More than 90 Avatars live between Wan and Yangchen. Thousands of years of history remain largely unexplored. Background period, not a separate released screen arc.
Yangchen The Rift, The Dawn of Yangchen and The Legacy of Yangchen Yangchen’s era is developed through comics and novels. These stories add political and spiritual history before Kuruk. Supplementary reading.
Kuruk The Shadow of Kyoshi: Kuruk’s Story and “Escape from the Spirit World: Kuruk’s Story” Kuruk’s life is explored through a novel-related story and an animated feature. His era provides context for the Avatar succession leading to Kyoshi. Supplementary, with one animated story available.
Kyoshi The Rise of Kyoshi, The Shadow of Kyoshi and the television story “Avatar Day” Kyoshi’s era is shown in novels, comics-era television material and a dedicated episode. Her period expands the historical record before Roku. “Avatar Day” is screen material; the novels are optional historical context.
Roku Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Reckoning of Roku Roku’s friendship and eventual break with Prince Sozin define his era. The conflict with Sozin sets the conditions for the Fire Nation war. Essential setup for Aang’s story; the additional title is supplementary.
Aang Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1–3 and postwar comics Aang must master all four elements and end the Fire Nation’s 100-year war. The war ends, and the postwar comics follow the rebuilding period. Essential main series; comics continue the era.
Korra The Legend of Korra seasons 1–4 and subsequent comics Republic City, the Equalists, the Water Tribe civil war, Harmonic Convergence, the new Air Nation and Kuvira’s Earth Empire conflict. The modern world changes politically, spiritually and technologically across four seasons. Essential main series; comics continue the story.
Pavi and the Seven Havens era Avatar: Seven Havens on Paramount+ Pavi, a young Earthbender, faces a cataclysm-scarred world in which human and spirit enemies regard the Avatar as humanity’s destroyer. The Seven Havens are civilization’s last strongholds. The next screen era after Korra.

Wan: where the Avatar cycle begins

Wan is officially identified as the first Avatar. His origin is told in The Legend of Korra season 2’s two-part “Beginnings” story: episode 7, “Beginnings, Pt. 1,” and episode 8, “Beginnings, Pt. 2.” Wan is exiled to the Spirit Wilds and becomes the first person to carry the Avatar role.

Those episodes are the only required screen material for understanding Wan’s place in the succession. They are embedded in Korra rather than released as a separate prequel, so viewers who watch by release order meet Wan much later than viewers following the in-universe chronology. The distinction is useful: Wan’s story is chronologically first, but its presentation is part of Korra season 2.

The huge gap between Wan and Yangchen

The official timeline says that “More than 90 Avatars lived between the eras of Wan and Yangchen.” That is the only broad count currently supplied for this stretch, and it should not be converted into an exact number or a fixed calendar length. Avatar Studios also notes that thousands of stories from this period remain untold.

Accordingly, there is no complete list of every Avatar between Wan and Yangchen. Yangchen is the next named Avatar in the published chronology, not necessarily the second Avatar overall. Any guide that assigns names, dates or detailed biographies to the unnamed succession is adding speculation rather than reporting the confirmed timeline.

Yangchen, Kuruk and Kyoshi: the expanded historical eras

Yangchen

Yangchen’s period is represented by The Rift, The Dawn of Yangchen and The Legacy of Yangchen in the official timeline. These are not additional television seasons; they are supplementary stories that enlarge an era otherwise summarized by the succession list.

Kuruk

Kuruk follows Yangchen. The official entries include The Shadow of Kyoshi: Kuruk’s Story and the television story “Escape from the Spirit World: Kuruk’s Story.” The different formats matter when planning a watch or reading order: the animated story can be viewed, while the novel-related material must be read.

Kyoshi

Kyoshi follows Kuruk. Her era includes the novels The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi, plus the television episode “Avatar Day.” If you want historical context beyond the main animated shows, The Rise of Kyoshi is the most direct optional starting point because it is explicitly placed in Kyoshi’s era.

Roku and the conditions that lead to Aang

Roku’s defining relationship is his friendship with Prince Sozin and their eventual break. The official timeline also lists The Reckoning of Roku. Roku’s era is therefore the bridge between the earlier Avatar histories and the war that dominates Aang’s story: the relationship with Sozin becomes the personal and political fault line behind the Fire Nation’s campaign.

Roku material is valuable before or alongside The Last Airbender, but the three-season Aang series remains the essential screen continuation of this period. The Roku entry explains the setup; Aang’s story shows its consequences.

Aang: the 100-year war and the postwar transition

Aang is found in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka. He must master all four elements while ending the Fire Nation’s 100-year war. The core of his era is told across the three animated seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The era does not end with the final television episode. Postwar comics continue the timeline and address the world after the conflict. They are supplementary to the three-season screen story, but they belong after it in chronological order and before Korra’s modern era.

  • Main screen requirement: all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  • Chronological follow-up: the postwar comics.
  • Historical context: Roku’s relationship with Sozin and the earlier Kyoshi, Kuruk and Yangchen material.

Korra: the last completed era before Seven Havens

Korra’s era begins in Republic City and unfolds across four seasons. The official timeline identifies several major phases:

  • The Equalists and the political crisis in Republic City.
  • The Water Tribe civil war and Harmonic Convergence.
  • The creation of the new Air Nation and the threat posed by the Red Lotus.
  • Kuvira’s Earth Empire conflict.

All four seasons are essential to the main screen chronology. Subsequent comics continue Korra’s era after the animated finale. They should be placed after season 4 when you are following events in order.

Korra is also where viewers encounter Wan directly, through season 2 episodes 7–8. For a strictly chronological approach, you can move those two episodes to the beginning; for the normal release experience, watch them in their original position within season 2. Neither approach changes the succession: Wan remains first, and Korra remains the Avatar immediately before the next era.

Who comes after Korra? Pavi in Seven Havens

Paramount+ describes Pavi as the next Avatar after Korra. Pavi is a young Earthbender living after a cataclysm has devastated the world. Human and spirit enemies see the Avatar as humanity’s destroyer, while the Seven Havens serve as civilization’s last strongholds. That premise marks a sharp world-state change from Korra’s Republic City and Earth Empire conflicts: the question is no longer only how the Avatar will stabilize existing societies, but whether those societies can survive at all.

Avatar: Seven Havens premiered on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026. Paramount+ lists Book 1 as 13 episodes and confirms Book 2 with 13 episodes. The service also reports renewal for Books 3 and 4. Nickelodeon’s announcement describes the original order as 26 half-hour episodes divided into two 13-episode books and identifies Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as co-creators and executive producers.

Future plot details, the final shape of Pavi’s journey and the complete explanation of the cataclysm should be treated as unknown until official episodes or announcements establish them. The currently confirmed point is succession: Pavi follows Korra.

Was there another Avatar between Korra and Pavi?

No. Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino directly rejected the hidden-Avatar theory: “Korra was the previous Avatar. There wasn’t a secret Avatar in between. I feel okay debunking that theory.” Pavi is therefore the next Avatar after Korra, not the successor to an undisclosed intermediate incarnation.

What remains unresolved is the length and cause of the interval. The reviewed official material does not provide a complete in-universe calendar or explain exactly why the Seven Havens era is so far removed from Korra’s. Those are open mysteries, not evidence of an additional Avatar.

Best watch and read order

Release-oriented first viewing

  1. Watch all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  2. Watch all four seasons of The Legend of Korra, including “Beginnings, Pt. 1” and “Beginnings, Pt. 2” in their season 2 position.
  3. Read the postwar Avatar: The Last Airbender comics if you want the transition after Aang.
  4. Read the Korra comics after season 4.
  5. Watch Avatar: Seven Havens after Korra.

This order follows how the screen franchises were introduced and preserves the intended reveal of Wan’s origin inside Korra.

In-universe chronology

  1. Watch Wan’s “Beginnings” two-parter from The Legend of Korra season 2.
  2. Use the Yangchen, Kuruk and Kyoshi novels, comics and animated stories as optional historical expansions.
  3. Follow Roku material, then watch Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1–3.
  4. Read the postwar Aang comics.
  5. Watch The Legend of Korra seasons 1–4 and read its continuation comics.
  6. Watch Avatar: Seven Havens, which begins Pavi’s era.

This version puts events in historical order, but it moves Wan’s episodes out of their original season placement. New viewers who prefer the franchise’s release rhythm should use the first order; returning viewers interested in history may prefer the second.

What is essential and what is supplementary?

Goal Minimum path Add these for more context
Understand the main animated succession Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1–3, The Legend of Korra seasons 1–4, then Seven Havens Wan’s two-part origin, watched in its original Korra season 2 position
Understand the ancient history Wan’s “Beginnings” episodes Yangchen, Kuruk and Kyoshi novels, comics and animated stories
Understand the road to the Fire Nation war Roku material plus The Last Airbender The Reckoning of Roku and Kyoshi-era stories
Follow each era beyond its finale Postwar Aang comics and Korra comics after their respective shows The full official timeline’s novels and supplemental entries

What the timeline still does not establish

  • Exact calendar years: the official summaries do not provide a complete year-by-year calendar from Wan through Pavi.
  • The length of the Korra-to-Pavi interval: no settled duration is given in the reviewed material.
  • The cause of the interval’s changed world: Seven Havens begins after a cataclysm, but its full explanation belongs to the new series.
  • Every Avatar between Wan and Yangchen: more than 90 lived in that span, but most remain unnamed and unexplored.

The reliable way to discuss the franchise is therefore to separate confirmed succession from unanswered chronology. Wan, Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang and Korra are the named chain; Pavi is the confirmed successor; the missing dates and the cataclysm’s details remain part of the story still being told.
