If Avast blocks a website or prevents an app from connecting, first identify which Avast feature is responsible. A Firewall rule can restrict an app’s network access; Web Shield can stop a website it considers unsafe. Update Avast and your browser before changing protection, then use the narrowest appropriate fix. Avast says its default Firewall rules are usually optimal, so changing them is normally unnecessary.
Identify what Avast is blocking
Start with the alert text, the affected app or site, and the Avast product and operating system you use. Menu names and available controls vary among Avast Free Antivirus, Premium Security, Avast One, Secure Browser, and Mac versions.
| What is affected | Likely Avast control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| An app cannot connect to the internet or another network | Firewall | Controls whether apps can make network connections and distinguishes trusted private networks from untrusted public ones. See Avast Firewall: Getting Started. |
| A website triggers an alert such as “Threat secured,” “Infected website,” or “Malicious URL blocked” | Web Shield or Web Guard | Scans web traffic and can block sites Avast identifies as malicious. See Avast’s website access troubleshooting guide. |
| Ads or trackers do not load in Avast Secure Browser | Ad blocking | Blocks ads and trackers; it is separate from website malware protection. See Avast Secure Browser FAQs. |
| An app requests access to saved browser passwords or cookies | Browser Shield | Manages access to browser data. See Avast Premium Security Browser Shield FAQs. |
These controls address different problems. Changing a Firewall rule will not resolve a Web Shield warning, and allowing a website exception will not restore an app blocked by the Firewall.
If Avast blocks a website
A malware warning is a security decision, not simply a connection error. A familiar site can still be compromised, and a warning alone does not establish that it is safe to proceed. Avast also acknowledges that a safe site can be misclassified.

Update first, then report a suspected false positive
- Update Avast and your browser using their built-in update controls.
- If the warning remains and you believe the site is safe, submit it for review through Avast’s false-positive reporting process.
- Wait for Avast to review the detection and update its definitions. Avast Support says confirmed website false positives are typically resolved through automatic virus-definition updates within a few hours; that is typical handling, not a guarantee for every report.
Use a website exception only when justified
Avast lists adding the URL to exceptions as an option for website access problems. An exception bypasses scanning or blocking for the specified site, reducing protection there. Use it only when you have a sound reason to trust the site, and keep its scope to the precise URL needed. Do not treat a detection as harmless just because you recognize the website. Exception controls differ by product and version; follow the instructions for your edition in Avast’s troubleshooting guide.
If a site loads slowly without a warning
Slow loading without a security alert may have another cause. Avast suggests temporarily turning off Web Guard as a diagnostic check, restarting the browser, and continuing with its repair steps if the issue persists. This test briefly removes web protection: turn Web Guard back on when the check is complete. Do not leave it disabled as a routine workaround.

If Avast Firewall blocks an app
For a trusted program that cannot get online, inspect its Firewall status and rules before changing broader network settings. Avast documents app controls including Block, Unblock, Ask me Mode, and app details or rules. The exact screens depend on product and version; the cited app procedure is for Windows.
- Open Avast and go to Protection → Firewall → Apps. If your version uses different labels, consult Avast Firewall: Getting Started.
- Find the affected application and inspect its status or rule. If it is blocked and you trust it, change only that app’s setting to allow or unblock it.
- If Avast asks how to handle the app, choose a suitable rule rather than allowing more access than the app needs. Ask me Mode can prompt you about app connections; app details and rules provide more specific controls.
- Check whether the network is classified as trusted or untrusted. A private home network and a public network should not automatically receive the same trust decision. Change a network’s classification only if you understand the implications.
- Retry the app. If it still cannot connect, review the relevant Firewall guidance before editing advanced rules.
Avast says it normally creates optimal app rules without user input. Manual packet-level network rules can affect more traffic than a single app setting, so avoid changing them unless you know the rule you need. See Avast Firewall Network Rules. For the Windows procedure to allow a blocked app or trust a network, use Avast’s guide to allowing internet access when Firewall blocks a program.

When the block is not a website or network connection
If ads disappear, check the Secure Browser’s ad-blocking controls rather than disabling Web Shield. If an app is asking for saved passwords or cookies, review Browser Shield’s access settings; granting that access exposes browser data, not merely network connectivity. Avast documents product-specific controls in its Secure Browser FAQs and Browser Shield FAQs.

Choose the least risky next step
- Security alert on a website: update Avast and the browser, then report a suspected false positive. Consider an exception only for a site you have good reason to trust.
- One trusted app cannot connect: inspect that app’s Firewall rule and allow only the access it needs.
- Slow loading without an alert: use Web Guard disablement only as a brief diagnostic test, then restore it.
- Ads or browser-data access: adjust the feature responsible for ads or browser data rather than changing Firewall or malware protection.
