For better sound from an AV receiver, start with the basics: set the receiver to match your actual speakers, run its room-calibration routine correctly, and verify that the source and HDMI path can deliver the format you want. These steps usually matter more than choosing a higher-resolution file or adding optional sound effects.

Set up the receiver for the speakers you actually have

Find the exact receiver model and follow its manual: speaker settings, HDMI behavior, supported formats, and calibration controls vary by model. For example, Yamaha’s RX300A settings guide lists speaker configuration, distance, level, equalizer, test tone, and room correction separately from HDMI audio output and ARC controls.

In the speaker setup menu, identify the front, center, surround, height, and subwoofer channels that are physically connected. Do not select a layout just because a streaming app or disc advertises a format. A mismatch can leave channels silent or route bass incorrectly.

Run room calibration, then check what it changed

Use the receiver’s supplied measurement microphone and the placement instructions in its manual. Onkyo’s TX-RZ1100 AccuEQ instructions describe measuring speaker test tones and automatically setting speaker volume levels, crossover frequencies, and distance from the listening position. They call for a quiet room and reference microphone placement on a tripod.

  • Step into lifelike sonic worlds - Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X for deeply dimensional, lifelike sound that draws you into every moment of your favorite entertainment, plus crystal-clear dialogue so you can hear every word.
  • Stunning visual realism - Supports ultra-high definition 4K/120 and 8K/60 video, high-performance HDMI switching, advanced Dolby Vision and HDR10+ dynamic range technologies, HDMI eARC/ARC and next-gen gaming features like ALLM and VRR.

  • Easy streaming with Bluetooth Multipoint - Stream all your favorite music, podcasts and audiobooks wirelessly. Built-in Bluetooth Multipoint lets you pair two source devices and instantly switch between them.
  1. Place the microphone at the listening position and height specified by the receiver manual. Keep the room quiet during measurement.
  2. Start the receiver’s calibration process and let it complete without interrupting the test tones.
  3. Review the detected speakers, distances, levels, crossover, and subwoofer routing in the receiver’s setup menus.
  4. If you move speakers, change the layout, or substantially alter the room, run calibration again.

Calibration is a measured starting point, not a guarantee that every result is ideal for every room or listener. Yamaha’s RX300A menu, for instance, provides separate controls for speaker distance, levels, test tone, and room correction, so check the settings rather than assuming the automatic routine left nothing to review.

Choose room correction and listening modes deliberately

Room correction can compensate for some effects of the room, but the available systems and adjustments depend on the receiver. Pioneer’s AVR manual describes EQ correction for acoustic distortion as well as separate phase and listening-mode options. Denon lists Audyssey and Dirac support for its AVR-X6800H. These are examples of model-specific features, not settings every receiver has.

Compare correction and listening modes at a consistent volume; a louder setting can seem better even when it is not more faithful to the source. Choose a mode that suits the material and your preference—such as stereo music or a multichannel movie—rather than assuming an enhancement is always an upgrade.

Check the whole TV-to-receiver signal path

ARC or eARC can send TV audio to a receiver over HDMI, but the TV, receiver, app or source device, and selected output format must all support the signal. A format may be lost if any part of the chain cannot pass or decode it.

  • CONVENIENT CONTROL - Connect Denon receiver to your Smart TV remote and access speaker sources & surround selections using just one handset, or download Denon Remote App for iOS and Android to control receiver through the phone

Denon’s X6800H information sheet distinguishes eARC, which it says carries HD and 3D formats including Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and Dolby Atmos, from conventional ARC, which it describes as limited to conventional 5.1-channel formats or PCM. That is a manufacturer’s explanation for its product information; check the manuals for both devices in your own setup before troubleshooting a missing format.

  • Confirm the TV and receiver are connected to their labeled ARC/eARC HDMI ports.
  • Check the TV’s audio output setting and the receiver’s selected input.
  • Verify that the app or source is providing the intended audio format, and that the receiver supports it over that connection.

Use audio formats your receiver supports

Choose a lossless file or stream when one is available, but check the receiver’s exact format limits and input path. Yamaha’s MusicCast FAQ lists support for ALAC up to 96 kHz/24-bit and WAV, FLAC, and AIFF up to 192 kHz/24-bit for MusicCast devices; higher limits depend on the specific device. Those ceilings do not apply to every AV receiver.

Treat sound enhancements as optional processing

Some receivers offer processing intended to alter or restore particular signals. Pioneer documents Sound Retriever for eligible lossy files, but notes that it is ineffective for bitstream inputs and unavailable in Direct or Pure Direct modes. Use such processing only when it applies to the signal and you prefer the result; it is not a universal quality upgrade.

Why receiver-specific instructions matter

There is no single objective setting that is best for every room and listener. Speaker layout, calibration controls, supported formats, and correction results depend on the receiver model, connected devices, speakers, room, and listening preference. For a reliable setup, use the exact receiver manual and verify the complete signal chain rather than copying settings from another model.
