Autonomous surface craft are not a single, fully mature class of ship. In current U.S. programs, they range from Navy medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV) prototypes used for sensing experiments to DARPA’s USX-1 Defiant, designed never to carry people, and Overlord prototypes intended to shape future fleet concepts. A crewed patrol boat such as the U.S. Navy Mark VI performs a different job: persistent littoral patrol, escort, force protection and boarding with sailors physically aboard.

The practical choice is therefore mission-dependent. Uncrewed craft can keep sensors on station for long periods without exposing a boat crew, while a Mark VI brings people, judgment and a boarding team to the point of contact. Official sources do not provide a controlled comparison of lifecycle cost, reliability, survivability or overall mission effectiveness, so those categories cannot be ranked with defensible numbers.

What “autonomous surface craft” includes

“Autonomous surface craft” describes a range of uncrewed vessels and operating concepts, not one standardized design. A vessel may navigate, avoid collisions and follow maritime rules with software while still being monitored, tasked or redirected by people ashore or aboard another ship. Unmanned does not mean unsupervised, and a navigation demonstration does not prove that a vessel can conduct every patrol task independently.

Sea Hunter and Seahawk: MUSV research platforms

The U.S. Navy describes Sea Hunter and Seahawk as autonomous medium unmanned surface vessel prototypes used for research and experimentation. Their stated roles include distributed sensing that extends a manned ship’s operational view, maritime-domain awareness and anti-submarine-warfare support. The Navy’s August 27, 2025 fact file gives approximate dimensions of 41 meters and a full-load displacement of 142.3 metric tons.

Those dimensions and missions belong to these prototypes; they are not a specification for every unmanned surface vessel. The Navy’s wording also matters: these are prototypes for experimentation, not evidence that an entire class has reached routine operational deployment.

USX-1 Defiant: a vessel designed without accommodation for people

DARPA’s USX-1 Defiant was designed from the outset never to accommodate a human aboard. At its August 11, 2025 christening, DARPA described the vessel as 180 feet long and 240 metric tons in lightship condition. It was completing final systems testing before an extended at-sea reliability and endurance demonstration.

That announcement establishes the program’s design intent and status on the christening date. It does not establish that the planned endurance demonstration had already been completed or that Defiant had entered an operational deployment. DARPA NOMARS program manager Greg Avicola summarized the ambition at the christening: “Defiant is a tough little ship and defies the idea that we cannot make a ship that can operate in the challenging environment of the open ocean without people to operate her.” That is a program-manager perspective, not an independent performance assessment.

Overlord: prototypes for concepts and fleet integration

The Navy’s Overlord Unmanned Surface Vessel program is intended to inform future USV development and fleet integration through prototypes, concepts of operations and tactics development. Its descriptions emphasize high endurance and reconfigurable designs. Those objectives are useful indicators of where the Navy is experimenting, but they should not be read as proof of a mature combat capability.

A Department of Defense account reports that a Ghost Fleet Overlord vessel traveled more than 4,700 nautical miles, almost entirely autonomously. In that account, autonomy included practical navigation tasks such as collision avoidance and following the rules of the sea. The publication year was not exposed in the available record, so the distance should be treated as a historical demonstration rather than a year-tagged benchmark. It also cannot establish that every autonomous craft can perform every patrol mission independently.

What a crewed Mark VI patrol boat is built to do

The Mark VI is a named U.S. Navy littoral patrol boat whose published mission is persistent patrol and force protection in coastal waters. The Navy lists escort, boarding and theater-security-cooperation tasks, all of which depend on people being present to interpret a situation and act on it.

The Navy fact file, last updated January 12, 2018, lists two five-person crews and an eight-person visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) team, for 18 people in the stated operating and boarding complement. It also lists more than 600 nautical miles of range, a cruise speed above 25 knots and a sprint speed above 35 knots. These are published specifications from an older fact file; they should not be treated as a current statement about fleet size, availability or every boat’s present configuration.

Mission and operating environment should come first

Open-ocean sensing and endurance

An uncrewed craft is attractive when the mission is to keep sensors operating over a broad area, extend the view of a manned force or collect data without putting a crew in a small hull for weeks at a time. Sea Hunter and Seahawk are explicitly associated with distributed sensing, maritime-domain awareness and anti-submarine-warfare support. A design such as Defiant targets the harder problem of remaining at sea without any accommodation for people.

Open-ocean autonomy also creates demanding technical requirements: reliable navigation, collision avoidance, communications, fault management and the ability to continue safely when links are delayed or interrupted. A vessel may be able to follow a route autonomously yet still require a shore team to approve a new task, resolve an ambiguous contact or recover the craft after a failure.

Close-in littoral protection and boarding

The Mark VI’s mission is closer to the people and objects being protected. Escorting a vessel, approaching a contact, conducting a boarding or supporting theater security cooperation involves judgment, communication and physical action at the scene. An embarked VBSS team can inspect a vessel, secure evidence and respond to changing behavior without waiting for a separate boat or boarding force.

These tasks explain why a crewed patrol boat can remain valuable even as autonomous sensing expands. An uncrewed scout may find or classify a contact; the Mark VI can be the platform that communicates, escorts or boards it.

Crew, remote supervision and decision authority

Removing the crew changes where decisions and risks sit; it does not remove them. A crewed boat carries operators, maintainers and a boarding team inside the operating environment. They can see, hear and interpret conditions directly, but they also face fatigue, injury, weather and the consequences of a damaged hull.

An autonomous craft moves many functions into software, sensors, communications links and shore-based control. The human team may be safer physically, yet the mission becomes dependent on data quality, navigation algorithms, remote command procedures and recovery plans. A loss of communications must be handled by preplanned behaviors, and a software system must distinguish ordinary traffic from a situation requiring human intervention.

What autonomy can mean in practice

  • Navigation autonomy: keeping a planned track, managing speed and steering and avoiding collisions while following the rules of the sea.
  • Mission autonomy: changing routes, stationing near an area or managing a sensor schedule in response to tasking and onboard observations.
  • Human-supervised operation: people ashore or aboard another platform monitor the vessel, approve important actions and intervene when the system reaches a condition outside its rules.
  • Physical action: boarding, inspection, rescue and other hands-on tasks still require people or a separate crewed asset unless a specific robotic capability has been demonstrated.

The Overlord transit demonstration supports the first category in a real voyage context. It does not, by itself, prove the latter categories.

Range, endurance and speed are not interchangeable

The Mark VI fact file gives a clear, if older, range and speed profile: more than 600 nautical miles, above 25 knots at cruise and above 35 knots at sprint. That combination supports rapid movement between littoral patrol areas and a quick response to a contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For autonomous examples, the cited sources emphasize endurance and long-distance operation rather than a common speed test. The Overlord voyage of more than 4,700 nautical miles demonstrates a long autonomous transit under its reported conditions, but it is not directly comparable with the Mark VI’s range figure. Fuel state, payload, sea state, route, loiter time and reserve policy can all change the meaning of a range number.

Sea Hunter and Seahawk’s approximately 41-meter length and 142.3-metric-ton full-load displacement show that these are substantial vessels, not small remote-controlled boats. Defiant’s 180-foot length and 240-metric-ton lightship description likewise indicate a large demonstrator. Size can support fuel, sensors and machinery, but it does not automatically establish speed, reliability or survivability.

Payloads, reconfiguration and the role of the mothership

The Navy describes Sea Hunter and Seahawk as distributed sensing platforms. Their value can come from placing sensors farther from a manned ship, creating more observation points or keeping a search pattern active while the crewed force concentrates elsewhere. Overlord’s reconfigurable emphasis points toward changing payloads and mission packages rather than a single permanent role.

The Mark VI also has reconfigurable mission spaces and can support embarked teams and unmanned systems. Its advantage is that people and equipment arrive together: a commander can adapt the mission space, communicate with a contact and deploy a boarding team from the same patrol boat.

Neither side should be described as universally more flexible. Autonomous craft may be easier to distribute across a wide area, while a crewed boat can re-task its people immediately at the point of contact. The sources do not provide payload weights, sensor suites or standardized modular interfaces that would support a numerical comparison.

Integration with manned forces

The strongest near-term concept is often a mixed force rather than an either-or replacement. A MUSV can extend a manned ship’s operational view; a patrol boat can investigate, escort or board. In that arrangement, autonomy supplies persistence and geographic reach while crews supply judgment, legal authority and physical presence.

Integration has practical requirements:

  • Common operating picture: sensor contacts from the uncrewed craft must be delivered in a form watchstanders can interpret.
  • Tasking and rules: commanders need clear limits for route changes, contact investigation and responses to lost communications.
  • Handoff procedures: a detected vessel must be transferred from sensor platform to patrol boat without losing track or duplicating effort.
  • Recovery and maintenance: crews need plans to retrieve, repair, refuel or replace an autonomous craft that cannot complete its mission.
  • Communications resilience: the force must continue safe navigation when links are delayed, degraded or unavailable.

These are operational integration issues, not merely software features. A vessel can navigate autonomously and still provide little tactical value if its data cannot be trusted or acted upon by the crewed force.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Safety, survivability and accountability

Uncrewed operation can remove sailors from a particular hull, but it does not make the mission risk-free. The vessel may be lost, stranded, collide with another ship or become unavailable at a critical time. A remote operator may have to make decisions with incomplete information, and a communications outage can limit intervention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A crewed Mark VI exposes personnel to the physical environment, yet its crew can detect unusual conditions, improvise repairs and communicate directly with another vessel. That human resilience is valuable in close-in operations, although it comes with training, fatigue, medical-support and force-protection burdens.

The cited official sources do not provide controlled survivability, reliability or casualty-rate comparisons. Any claim that one category is categorically safer, tougher or more reliable would go beyond the evidence.

Program maturity and what the evidence actually demonstrates

Sea Hunter, Seahawk and Overlord are described in terms of prototypes, experimentation, concepts of operation, tactics development and demonstrations. Defiant was in final systems testing before an extended reliability and endurance demonstration at its August 2025 christening. These milestones show active development, not a completed operational record.

The Mark VI fact file provides a named mission and specifications, but its January 2018 update date matters. It should be used to understand the published design and intended role, not to infer the current status of every boat or the Navy’s present procurement plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence should therefore be read by category:

  • Demonstrated: an Overlord vessel’s reported long autonomous transit; the stated dimensions and roles of Sea Hunter and Seahawk; Defiant’s design intent and 2025 test status.
  • Specified: the Mark VI’s published crew composition, range and speeds in the 2018 fact file.
  • Not established by these sources: comparative lifecycle cost, maintenance burden, reliability, survivability, fleet availability or mission-effectiveness scores.

How to choose a concept for a mission

  1. Define the task. Decide whether the requirement is sensing, patrol, escort, boarding, security cooperation or a combination.
  2. Set the human-presence requirement. If the mission requires inspection, negotiation, rescue or physical security, plan for a crewed platform or an accompanying boarding force.
  3. Set the persistence requirement. For wide-area observation or long station time, evaluate whether an uncrewed craft can provide coverage without frequent recovery.
  4. Specify supervision and communications. Document who can retask the vessel, what it does after a lost link and which decisions require human approval.
  5. Plan the handoff. If an autonomous sensor is expected to cue a patrol boat, define the data, timing and authority for that transition.
  6. Measure the right evidence. Compare vessels under the same payload, sea state, speed, reserve and maintenance assumptions; do not mix a demonstration distance with a fact-file range as though they were equivalent tests.
  7. Account for the full system. Include shore control, communications, recovery, spares, training and a crewed response option, not just the hull price.

Bottom line for common scenarios

Wide-area maritime awareness

An autonomous craft is the better fit when the priority is distributing sensors and extending a manned force’s view over a large area. Sea Hunter and Seahawk are the clearest examples in the cited material.

Persistent coastal patrol with possible boarding

A Mark VI-style crewed patrol boat is the better fit when personnel must escort, communicate face-to-face, board or provide immediate security cooperation. Its published 18-person crew-and-VBSS complement exists for that reason.

Layered operations

The most complementary arrangement uses autonomous craft for detection and persistence, then sends a crewed patrol boat when a contact requires judgment or physical action. That approach preserves the endurance advantages being tested by autonomous programs without pretending that navigation autonomy replaces a boarding team.
