A retry is useful only when the next attempt has a reason to succeed. Before an automation retries, it should classify the failure, decide whether waiting or changing the request can help, and enforce limits on both attempts and elapsed time. That distinction separates recovery from repeatedly running the same failed operation.

Why “just try again” can keep automation stuck

In a technical account published on DEV Community on August 30, 2026, Lily describes retry problems across several of the author’s own automation systems. The examples illustrate how retries can consume time, hide failures, or prevent other work from running when the system treats every error alike. The incidents and figures below are the author’s account, not independently verified benchmarks.

One title-generation lane had a 58-character validator limit that was missing from its prompt. The author says it returned the same 63-character title on all three attempts. Repeating the request could not fix a mismatch the system had not explained or changed.

In an image-generation workflow, a moderation block was retried through three stages. The author reports that one concept could take as long as 21 minutes, or 63 minutes across three concepts. In another example, a slot manager with three global slots and runs lasting 14–62 minutes reportedly made 18–34 launch attempts per hour; the author cites hours in which 9, 8, and 12 jobs were skipped.

A queue job reportedly remained pending for 39 hours after requeueing succeeded without recording an attempt count. Because monitoring did not register it as a failure, the job looked pending rather than exhausted. These examples point to a practical rule: classify the failure before choosing the retry action.

First decide what kind of failure occurred

Ask three questions before another attempt: “Will waiting fix it?” “When do you cut it off?” “What do you change before the next attempt?” These questions, raised in Lily’s account, help distinguish errors that call for a delay from those requiring correction or an immediate stop.

Failure class Typical response What to check
Transient rate limit or temporary network failure Wait and retry within a defined budget; respect a server-provided Retry-After value when applicable. Preserve the status and response details; confirm the request can be replayed.
Deterministic validation or moderation rejection Correct the input or change the conditions before another attempt; otherwise stop. Keep the actual value, applicable limit, and machine-readable error code.
Permanent or unsupported error Stop retrying automatically and report or escalate it. Make the failure visible rather than mapping it to a generic retryable error.
Resource contention, such as a full shared slot pool Wait for capacity, using jitter where many workers may retry together. Do not hold a lock while sleeping; distinguish a busy resource from a failed operation.

These are decision categories, not a universal status-code policy. The source describes different example eligibility lists in JavaScript and Python: the JavaScript example retries 429 and selected 5xx statuses, while the Python example names 429, 500, 502, 503, and 504. Both examples raise immediately for other HTTP errors. A system should define eligibility in one place and tailor it to the service and operation rather than treating those lists as standards.

Change the next attempt, not just its timing

For deterministic failures, correct the input

If a validator rejects a title because it exceeds a length limit, resubmitting the same title does not create a new outcome. Pass the limit to the generator, or provide a corrective instruction that includes the measured value and the limit. When an LLM is asked to rewrite content, a natural-language correction can be more actionable than an internal error identifier alone.

For rate limits and temporary failures, delay deliberately

Rate limits and temporary network errors may clear with time. Use backoff rather than rapid repeated calls, and consider Retry-After when supplied. Shared workers can otherwise synchronize and hit the service or shared resource together; randomized jitter can spread attempts. In the author’s slot-manager example, the wait ceiling was configurable at 600 seconds with randomized intervals. That is an example from one system, not a default suitable for every queue.

For non-replayable requests, make replay safe first

A retry can fail for a reason unrelated to the original error if the request body cannot be sent again. The article warns that a consumed stream cannot simply be reused. Buffer or otherwise make the body replayable before retrying, and consider whether repeating the operation could duplicate side effects.

Set limits on attempts and elapsed time

An attempt cap and a time budget solve different problems. A count alone does not bound how long a job might wait between attempts; a time limit alone can still allow a rapid burst. Track both the number of attempts and absolute time since intake for queued work, then stop when either policy limit is reached.

Make the give-up decision a small, pure function where possible. That makes boundary cases—such as a job exactly at its time limit—straightforward to test. Record whether work waited, stopped, or exhausted its budget so that a job cannot remain indefinitely pending merely because it was successfully requeued.

Keep error details and retry behavior observable

Generic labels make unlike failures look identical. Lily reports that the same HTTP 429 condition appeared under seven different log names across the systems discussed. Retain the status, useful error body, error code, and relevant context such as the rejected value and its limit. Standardized event names make it easier to see whether a task is waiting, retrying, stopping, or exhausting its budget.

Visibility also means distinguishing an operation failure from a system that is still making progress. The author describes an inbox response measured at 512,558 characters that was silently truncated at 400,000 before JSON parsing. A size limit can be necessary, but silently cutting a response obscures the cause; log the truncation and handle the resulting parse failure explicitly.

Review control flow when changing retry handling

Turning a swallowed error into a thrown exception changes what runs next. Cleanup, reporting, or other required side effects may have been reachable only because execution continued after the failure. When updating a retry loop or error policy, inspect the full exception path and ensure essential cleanup and status reporting still run, even when the operation ultimately fails.

The article also recounts a Cloudflare authentication error that was initially treated as requiring human intervention. The author later describes successful probes and a transient 401 shortly after token reissue. This is a single-system account, not a reason to treat authentication failures generally as transient; it is a reminder to preserve enough context to identify what actually failed.

Test retry paths with controlled failures

  1. Choose a failure class: inject a known rate limit, temporary network failure, validation rejection, or exhausted resource into a test or controlled environment.
  2. Check the decision: confirm that the system waits, corrects, stops, or escalates according to that failure rather than retrying every error identically.
  3. Verify limits and records: check attempt count, elapsed-time cutoff, emitted status, and final job state, including boundary cases.
  4. Check cleanup and replay: confirm required reporting or cleanup still happens and that a retried request body can actually be sent again.
  5. Run normally afterward: confirm the fault injection is inactive and ordinary successful runs do not emit retry logs.

Centralize retry eligibility in one function or layer where practical. This reduces inconsistent behavior and helps prevent nested retry policies from multiplying attempts unexpectedly. Keep the policy visible enough that an operator can tell why a request was retried and what will cause it to stop.
