The message “Automatic Startup Repair Can’t Repair Your PC” means Windows tried its built-in startup recovery and did not resolve the problem; it does not identify one cause or one universal fix. Start with the recovery option that matches what changed before Windows stopped starting, and protect important files before attempting more disruptive repairs.
What the Startup Repair message means
Startup Repair runs in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and attempts to fix certain problems that prevent Windows from starting. When it reports “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC,” that is a failed repair attempt—not a diagnosis of whether the cause is an update, damaged startup configuration, disk issue, or something else. Microsoft describes the tool and its limits in its Startup Repair documentation.
Before choosing another repair, note whether the failure followed a Windows update, driver or software change, abrupt shutdown, or hardware change. If files are important, back them up before recovery if you can. Some recovery choices preserve personal files, while others can remove them.

- From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
- Select Restart and let Windows attempt the repair.
On an encrypted device, recovery tools may require the BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions document this requirement.
If you cannot reach WinRE, use installation media to get there
If the PC will not open its built-in recovery tools and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc, Microsoft documents using Windows installation media created on another working PC. This route is for reaching repair tools; do not choose Windows installation when your immediate goal is recovery.
- On a working PC, create Windows installation media using Microsoft’s Windows recovery environment instructions.
- Connect the media to the affected PC and turn it on. A USB flash drive can serve as the media, but Microsoft’s general instructions do not specify a particular product or capacity.
- Choose the language and other preferences on the setup screen, then select Repair my PC to enter WinRE.
If the setup screen does not appear, the PC may not be configured to boot from that drive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the model’s boot order rather than proceeding with an installation.
Choose the next recovery option based on what happened
These choices differ in what they roll back and what they preserve. Back up important files first when possible, and check the prompts on your own PC because availability can depend on Windows version, device configuration, and encryption.
| Option | When it may fit | Effect on files, apps, and settings |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent update | The startup problem began after a Windows update. | Microsoft says this option does not affect personal files or apps, although some updates cannot be removed. |
| System Restore | A system change preceded the failure and a suitable restore point is available. | Rolls back system files and settings, but not personal files. Available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. |
| Point-in-time restore | A supported Windows 11 device running version 24H2 or later has a recent automatic restore point that may help. | Unlike System Restore, it can roll back apps, settings, and personal files to that restore point. Check the on-screen details before proceeding. |
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery options have not worked and you want Windows reinstalled with a choice about personal files. | You can choose to keep or remove personal files; apps and settings are removed. |
| Reinstall Windows from installation media | Other recovery options are unsuitable or unsuccessful and you are prepared for a more disruptive reinstall. | Reinstallation can remove everything. Microsoft notes that a PC maker’s recovery image typically includes hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media might not include. |
For the available paths and their effects, see Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows and its guidance on WinRE troubleshooting features. On a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT department if recovery options fail.
After an update: uninstall it
From WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options and look for the uninstall-updates option. Use it when the timing points to a recent update; Windows may not offer removal for every update.

After a system change: consider a restore point
System Restore can reverse system-file and settings changes without reverting personal files. If the device runs Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, Point-in-time restore may appear in supported circumstances. Read its confirmation screen carefully: it can roll back personal files as well as apps and settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen targeted options fail: reset or reinstall
Reset this PC is less targeted and removes apps and settings even if you choose to keep personal files. Reinstalling from media can erase everything, so do not start it until you understand the file impact and have backed up what you need. A manufacturer recovery image may include model-specific drivers and factory apps not included in generic Windows media.

Startup Repair records information about its checks and attempted repairs in %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. The log can help investigate a startup problem, but its existence does not make one listed repair appropriate for every PC.
Boot troubleshooting depends on the failure mode. Microsoft’s documentation covers distinct cases such as boot-loader failures and BCD errors; it does not support treating boot-record commands, partition edits, registry replacement, or disk-repair commands as a universal copy-and-paste fix. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows startup issues troubleshooting guidance for symptom-specific troubleshooting.
WinRE itself may fail to start if the boot manager, BCD, or relevant disk metadata is corrupted. If the storage device may be failing or you cannot risk losing data, stop before write operations and seek qualified device support or professional data recovery.
Quick Recap
When to contact support
- For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your organization’s IT department.
- For a consumer PC that cannot boot from installation media or needs model-specific firmware, boot-order, or recovery instructions, contact the manufacturer.
- If available recovery choices could erase files you need, pause and arrange a backup or data-recovery assessment before resetting or reinstalling Windows.
