Use autofocus (AF) as the practical starting point for general photography and moving subjects; switch to manual focus (MF) when you need to place focus precisely or autofocus selects the wrong detail. Neither mode is universally sharper or more reliable: the best choice depends on the subject, scene, camera, lens and intended point of focus.
What is the difference between autofocus and manual focus?
Autofocus is the camera’s function for automatically focusing on a subject. In manual focus, you adjust focus by turning the lens’s focus ring. The exact controls and behavior depend on the camera and lens; consult their manuals for model-specific instructions. Sony’s AF and MF guidance describes the distinction for its α9-series cameras.
Some cameras also offer direct manual focus (DMF): the camera first focuses automatically, then you can refine focus manually. This can be useful when AF gets close but settles on the wrong part of a subject.

AF modes address whether focus locks or continues to adjust. Names and behavior differ among camera systems, so treat the examples below as Sony’s terminology rather than universal labels.

| Situation | Starting choice | Why and what to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary subject | AF-S or single-shot AF | Acquires focus and locks it. If the subject moves, or you recompose after locking focus, the focus point may no longer be right. |
| Subject moving toward, away from or across the frame | AF-C or continuous AF, with tracking if available | Continues adjusting focus while active. Choose a suitable focus area and check how your camera handles subject recognition and tracking. |
| Movement is uncertain | AF-A, where offered | On Sony cameras described in its support guidance, this mode switches between single and continuous behavior based on detected movement. Availability and behavior vary by system. |
Sony describes AF-S as acquiring and locking focus, AF-C as continuing to focus while the shutter button is held halfway, and AF-A as switching behavior according to detected movement. For a moving train or airplane, its focus-setting examples discuss tracking and focus-area choices. Tracking can help keep a selected subject under focus, but results depend on the scene and camera model.
When should you switch to manual focus?
AF selects the wrong detail
If the camera focuses on a nearer edge, background element or other unintended detail, MF lets you place the focus plane yourself. DMF is another option when you want AF to establish focus first and then make a fine adjustment.

- This compact ruler allows you to determine if your lens is auto-focusing accurately as it should. It is an essential tool that is particularly useful when shooting with a shallow depth of field, where focusing should ideally be "spot on".
- You can use this ruler to determine how "off" the focusing is for a particular camera / lens combination and, on supported cameras, adjust the camera's auto-focus settings to resolve this
- On Nikon cameras, this feature is known as "AF Fine Tune". On Canon and Sony cameras, it's known as "AF Micro Adjustment". Please refer to your camera's instructions manual to see if this feature is present.
- Size:19*12.3cm
- Package Included: Lens Focus Calibration Card X 2
You are photographing small details up close
Macro scenes often have a shallow depth of field, so a small shift in focus can change which part of the subject appears sharp. Sony’s macro-lens guidance describes using DMF or MF, along with focus aids, to place focus more deliberately.

You need deliberate focus placement
For a tripod scene or another setup where you have time to inspect the image, MF gives you direct control over focus placement. Check the intended detail at the actual working setup; an aid on the display is not a guarantee that the desired detail is sharp.

How can you judge focus in manual mode?
- Magnification: Enlarges an area on the display so you can inspect detail while adjusting focus. Confirm that your camera supports it and learn how to activate it.
- Focus peaking: Highlights edges the camera identifies as in focus. Sony describes its peaking function as enhancing the outlines of in-focus areas during MF or DMF. Peaking can make focus easier to judge, but it does not guarantee that the specific subject detail you want is sharp.
Support and implementation vary by model. Sony’s ILCE-7M5 accessibility guidance describes magnification and peaking functions. For a legacy example, the Canon EOS 1000D instruction manual describes magnified Live View focusing at 5x and 10x; that example is specific to that older camera, not a general specification for current bodies.
A simple way to choose for your next shot
- Decide whether the subject is moving. For a stationary subject, start with single-shot AF if available. For movement, try continuous AF and tracking if your camera supports them.
- Check where the camera focuses. If it locks on the intended detail and the result looks right, keep AF. If the selected point is wrong, try a different focus area or use DMF or MF.
- Use a viewing aid when refining manually. Magnify the relevant area or use peaking if available, then inspect the detail you actually want sharp.
- Check the result at your working setup. Especially for close-up or tripod work, confirm focus under the conditions in which you are making the photograph rather than relying on the mode name or an indicator alone.
Do you need different equipment?
Not necessarily. First check whether your current camera and lens provide the AF modes and manual-focus aids your subjects require. Lenses with a focus ring and AF/MF capability are relevant for some macro work, but compatibility depends on the camera mount and features; the guidance cited here does not establish that a purchase is needed. An external monitor or LCD loupe is also optional: check whether your camera’s built-in magnification or peaking is already adequate before considering a viewing accessory.

Manufacturer guidance explains features and techniques but does not establish that AF or MF is faster, sharper or more reliable across all equipment. Outcomes depend on the camera, lens, settings, scene and photographer’s adjustments. A specific camera or lens recommendation would require knowing your body, mount, subjects and budget. Sony’s tack-sharp-image guidance also discusses AF-C and MF in the context of focus technique.
