To auto-resize a textarea without JavaScript, set field-sizing: content in CSS. Add minimum and maximum dimensions to keep the control usable; once it reaches its maximum height, it can scroll. MDN marks the property Baseline 2026, available across the latest browsers and devices since June 2026, though older clients may not support it.
How to auto-resize a textarea with CSS
MDN describes field-sizing as a way to control the sizing behavior of elements with a default preferred size, including form controls. On a <textarea>, the value content lets the control size itself to its contents.
textarea {
field-sizing: content;
min-width: 12rem;
max-width: 100%;
min-height: 3rem;
max-height: 16rem;
}The dimensions above are illustrative design choices, not required values. Adjust them to suit your layout. The minimum dimensions define the textarea’s starting size; the maximum dimensions limit its growth. When content exceeds the maximum height, the textarea can scroll so users can reach the remaining text.
See MDN’s field-sizing reference for the property and its behavior.

How width, height, rows, and cols affect sizing
A width constraint changes when text wraps, which in turn affects how the textarea grows vertically. Set a maximum width if it must stay within its container, as in the example. Avoid a fixed width or height when you want the control’s dimensions to follow its content; a fixed dimension can reinstate a fixed size.
With field-sizing: content, the rows and cols attributes do not determine the textarea’s preferred size, according to MDN. The property applies to textareas as well as text inputs.

Keep or remove the JavaScript fallback?
MDN labels field-sizing “Baseline 2026” and says it has been available across the latest devices and browser versions since June 2026. That makes CSS a reasonable default for current browser targets, but the status does not establish support in every older browser or device. Check the browser versions your site supports before removing a fallback relied on by those users. MDN’s support information is the relevant reference; no complete browser-by-browser version table is cited here.

Should users still be able to resize it manually?
Content-driven sizing and the manual resize handle are separate behaviors. Textareas are resizable by default in most browsers; control manual resizing with the CSS resize property. Choose whether to retain the handle based on the interface you want, and consult MDN’s resize reference for its options. For the element’s basic purpose and attributes, see MDN’s <textarea> reference.
