Auto Insert Notification is a legacy Windows setting for detecting when a CD or DVD is inserted and the drive tray is closed. Depending on the disc and the computer’s settings, that detection could prompt AutoRun to start a program, or open or play audio and video. It is a setting tied to optical media—not a phone alert or browser notification.
What Auto Insert Notification does
In older Windows terminology, Auto Insert Notification refers to the CD-ROM-specific form of media-change detection. A Compaq Software Guide describes it as an operating-system option for turning AutoRun on or off. In practical terms, the computer detects a newly inserted disc after the tray closes, then may respond according to the disc’s contents and system configuration.
The notification and the action that follows are related but not identical. Detection signals that the media changed; AutoRun or media playback is what the computer may do in response.

The result depends on the type of disc and whether it contains the relevant content:

- Data disc with an autorun file: The system may start the application specified by that file.
- Audio or video disc: The computer may open or play the media.
- Other discs: The system may simply detect the disc and update its displayed contents.
Compaq and Fujitsu manuals describe these behaviors for older computers; they do not mean that every inserted disc automatically runs software. Fujitsu’s LifeBook E-6664 manual specifically describes a DVD/CD starting after insertion and tray closure, with program launch conditional on the disc containing an autorun file.
How it relates to Media Change Notification and AutoRun
Historical Windows terminology uses Media Change Notification (MCN) as the broader term and Auto Insert Notification for the CD-ROM-specific mechanism. The notification is not the whole AutoRun feature: it is part of the detection process that could prompt AutoRun and affect how the shell displayed the disc’s contents. This distinction comes from the historical overview of AutoRun; treat it as background on older Windows behavior, not current configuration guidance.

Why an older CD-ROM drive light may flash
A periodically flashing CD-ROM activity light can indicate that the computer is checking the drive for media. Sony’s support page, modified November 4, 2018, explains that this polling can occur when Auto Play or Auto Insert Notification is enabled. Should you change the setting today?
Only use instructions written for the exact Windows version and optical drive you have. Older manufacturer manuals describe Device Manager paths and may require restarting, but those steps are system-specific and do not establish the right procedure for current Windows releases. For an older notebook, consult its manual—for example, Fujitsu’s LifeBook C2010/C2111 manual—and verify that its instructions match your installed Windows version before changing settings.
